Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Not sure if this thread has been covered my apologies if it has.

With picks 1 and 2 in the draft it is unclear (IMO) as to which player the Dees rated as a better prospect.

I read somewhere that because Scully had long been touted as being potential number 1 pick for much of the year and dealt with the pressure etc, there was no point upsetting the apple cart and putting Trengove ahead of him, obviously it served no purpose.

I don't know a heap about Tom or Jack, so for the purpose of general opinion and learning more about the strengths and weaknesses of the players (mainly from those who saw them play pre-draft) I ask the hypothetical question:

If the Dees could only have drafted one player out of Scully or Trengove, who do you think it would have been? (and obviously, why?)

Yes, I know it's kinda irrelevant as they are both on the Dees' list, why critique them against each other? I'm interested to see what responses and explanations you folk have and see if there's a consensus.

From my personal viewpoint, albeit light on info as previously explained, I think that Jack Trengove is the better prospect. He seems to be more of a more rounded player, as well as (the short term benefit of) having played against men and performed well above expectations.

As a side note: I've noticed in very early discussions re fantasy comps that many colleagues/ mates have chosen trengove in their team, with few selecting Sculls. Obviously there are many factors at play there re: my location, price, strategy, injury etc. Has anyone else noticed a clear early preference re fantasy comps between sculls & trenners?

I'll vote in a couple of years time i think.....

haha... doubt you'd be alone with that response. It's about the expectation pre performance, so responses before the upcoming NAB cup appearances would be less tainted/ more representative of what the club saw in the lads when researching the number one pick.

EDIT

Probably stated the obvious quite a bit there, lol.

Scully, which doesn't mean I have less love for Trengove. Trengove is a smooth mover with great balance and skills, plus he's exceptional overhead for a midfielder, but Scully has the best hands I've seen (already), doesn't stop running, is driven, gets to contest after contest, is tough and leads on the field in a way that makes others follow.

Thank Jordan we have both.

Scully deserved to be picked #1. But there are so many variables as to who will become the better player. Not the least of which is popular vs personal opinion.

Luckily we probably won't need to deal with the comparisons. Not in the same way the NicNat/Watts one will stick around to haunt us for many years.

Trengove for me.

We blue sky mined the year before with Watts who will be great in 4 years time, elite hopefully soon after.

JT will be great from day IMO.

If we look at their progress over 5 years, I would have them equal at the age of 23. Obviously I dont know, but am intrigued because I have been asking myself this question lately. Then hopefully it is Ablett jr and Buckley.

I back Scully, basically because he was taken first. While everyone regards them as more or less co-number ones, I think the order has to have some significance.

As with most people however, I would have been thrilled with with either one. They both look to be amazing players in the making.

More interesting to me is would you take Scully, Trengove or Watts?

This was done to death when the Jordy McMahon board was around - it's all hypotheticals but FWIW, Scully. Despite what DB said about someone having to be read out 'first. I'm a firm believer that if we had only had one pick, it goes with saying, he got his name read out 'first' for a reason.

Overall, i do not give a toss. I love them both already.

Surely they just chose the player who'll handle the pressure of being #1 draft pick better. They could easily have rated Jack's ability more than Tom.

Personally I'd take Trengove but as others have said, it's too early to say.

Sorry to go against the trend but I actually think Tappscott will be the best pick up from this years draft, At least for the next couple of years. Now im not stupid and with the quality that Trengove and Scully seem to have they will almost definatly overtake him but for the next few years with his body and skill leval (not just in front of goal) I think he will be the one that stands out.

Kegs I could not agree more i think he was a steal @18 and will be as important as Scully and Trengove. FWIW i Voted Trengove i followed him pretty closely last yr like many others and too here the way the SA Football experts and royalty were talking well lets just say got me excited.....

Just for now I'm unsure if his fitness is where it needs to be for AFL, and also I have queries about his reading of the play.

In time these things will develop, but I think he's a little way off playing yet.

The obvious choice is Dustin Martin....only joking!!

Scully is was the stand out no.1 for most of the year but Trengove came home strongly and I'm expecting Trengove to start stronger. It's such a tough choice because they're different types of mids but thankfully (Jordan McMahon come on down!!!) we didn't have to make it.

At this stage I honestly can't pick one over the other

In the words of DB, if I had the option I'd vote (draft) both at No.1; but because the requirement of this thread is to put one in front of the other, so I'll make it simple and base it on alphabetical order, therefore it's Scully. :P

Personally, I can't separate them. :P

From memory Tappscott was almost a lock for top 10 pick earlier last year. I wonder why he slid to 18?? How's he been going anyway? He always seems to be on the sidelines throwing a tennis ball around at training.

Imagine in three or four years time when we have Scully, Trengove, Morton, Blease, Tapscott, Grimes, Gysberts all being fed by a monster called Gawn and drilling it down the throats of Watts, Jurrah, Aussie, Maric and Fitzpatrick. All of these guys have come from the last three drafts. This is not mention, Martin, Bennell, Jetta, Strauss, Cheney, McKenzie, Spencer. Let's wait and see. There is so much talent there and who knows who will shine above the rest.............In the words of Cosmo Kramer...."OOOH BABY!!"

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
