CARLTON

It was reported on Channel 9 news that after the Booze Boot affair that it was likely to loose a sponsorship.

This is the club with a 6 and a half million debt. I believe the sponsor could be Mars .

This seems to be correct- Mars seemed likely to sign a million dollar contract which nows seems very unlikely. Maybe the Dees can take this up.

So do Carlton don't they? I don't think Mars was going to be a Major Sponsor.

Rumour has it, it was going to be a million or so.

I think the Mars deal would have replaced their current Malaysian tourism deal as joint major sponsor. Last i'd heard was that the deal wasn't going to be re-newed for next season.

Yes, I just read a report that Mars was a possible replacement for the Malaysian government. I'd often wondered what that squiggle on their jumper was (obviously not enough to research it -- well, I don't really care about who their sponsor is). Ordinary marketing/advertising when the sponsor's name isn't legible.

Melbourne already have two major sponsors.

So what, business is business. remember what the Dogs did to us with the Mexican food company, they undercut us. This is our chance to get involved and offer a sponsorship that cost them less and may not necessarily be a major sponsor but a slightly lesser one of sorts, still worth a lot of money to us. We have great list of young players that is going places and that may be attractive to them. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

PS. I bet other clubs are circling.

Agree- and who would want to waste there time.Carlton have denied Channel 9's commentary. Stated here-http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/blues-deny-boozecruise-lost-it-a-sponsor-20100110-m0pk.html.

Do not know who to believe , they both are great bending the truth, and I suppose who cares.

Great points Redleg - was thinking about the Bulldogs doing the above when I wrote this thread. Go and get Mars -Cam

Can see the ads now, Jack Watts/Liam Jurrah spills a mark, takes a bite of a Mars bar and rises over the pack to take Mark of the Year. Miller doesn't make the distance from 40 metres out, nibbles on Mars bar and slots a 60 metre goal and Davey can't outrun Jamar but after his Mars bar baulks 5 players to kick a great goal. Then young Johnny who can't get a kick in his under 9's has a bite of his Mars bar and goes beserk for a best on ground and is chaired off by his team mates all nibbling on their Mars bars.

Later that week Cam Schwab posts a pic of himself on his twitter/facebook page with a big grin, Mars bar in hand.

My point is that if what reported is true, Mars would be after a major sponsorship and all that Melbourne would be able to offer would be a secondary one (not on the jumper or shorts).

I would be surprised if Mars bothered with a secondary sponsorship.

That would be correct. The Malaysian Government doesn't want a bar of them anymore.

I think from memory Essendon tried to do exactly that to us and the doggies with the mission deal.

Spot on. A major sponsorship of (say) $1,000,000 would deliver a lot more exposure to Mars than several secondary ones adding up to the same amount. Mars will have a budget for a major sponsorship and will want to spend it on a major sponsorship. It's as simple as that IMO.

Maybe not as simple as that IMO. These are tough times and they may wish to reduce outlay but get maximum bang for the buck.

Don't Collingwood have 4 elite sponsors?

Believe so, however we have two- HANKOOK & KASPERSKY (whom I noticed advertising on a oval which S.Africa & England played last week.)

Volvo have become our shorts sponsor this year increasing their sponsorship. However to gain a major sponsor like Mars would be a great coup. Go Cam get them.

Maybe they could create a Demon Bar.

What would Hancook & Kaspersky make of it with the current arrangement in place if Mars was pursued by CS ?

Isn't the club obliged to honour the current arrangement of terms with the current sponsors ?

Alternatively, Casey Fields could be re-named MARS Oval... No, No scrap that.

MCG - Mars Cricket Ground.... No, delete that one...

I'm sure other clubs will be circling.

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
