Ball's Choice Collingwood or Essendon

Ah, the old Shane Woewodin excuse. Either way, I'm pretty sure (taking away the Brownlow effort) AA selection & a B&F in a GF side is an example of "topline" football.

Not really sure what that is but I think Woewodin was also lucky to win the Brownlow despite having a very good year.

As far as 2003 goes, Buckley was in his prime as a receiver who had the football world at their pinacle of blowing wind up his ass especially in the media. In any case I'll concede 02/03 as about the period where he was his most prominently recognised as a player as they are so close anyway. It doesn't change the fact that by 05 he was not at his "peak".

gotta laugh... apparently having players of the ilk of Neeta out doesnt count for nought...or Robbo even.. Greeny . not th ebiggest fan myself of Riv..but lets throw him in for good measure. Hardly saw Beamer in 08.. etc etc etc.

I will avoid the star for star equation.. ( as really neither side has many ) ....but its the cohesions etc of the teams.. We had bugger all...some weeks couldnt really get together a decent starting 22...and we were tanking all the time ?? like hell we were. We were struggling to play footy let alone win.

seems we're not the only ones raising an eyebrow...lol

Dons believe Ball behavior warrants scrutiny

The AFL more likely to heed their concerns than ours. Ought to be interesting

Like I've said, CEO Ian Robson is right in saying from the moment Luke Ball signed on in the ND, it's game on. Or he is "in the game now." Despite his personal preferences.

Anyone can pick him up. As rpfc has stated time and again, if the Dees consider him the best available at pick 18 or whatever......you pick him.

With all due respect I would love to hear their line of argument ... "because we cant get Luke ball with the pick we wanted to take him with - we now want to complain." my words not his.

hahaha - they know the score if they really want him - hello! pick 10 boys ... cough it up or shut up.

Being unable to screen a player medically before there is a draft is of concern to me If

what I've heard is correct regarding Ball refusing access to clubs. You should have a right

to access the product if it's on the open market.

i concur 100%. if you nominate for any draft you either need to make yourself available for all clubs or none.

my suggestion is that perhaps the afl should do a medical report on all players planning on entering the draft which can be circulated to any interest clubs.

while some may view this as an invasion of privacy, it is unfortunate but it is part of the game. As said before, the player chose to play for the afl, not for the vfl or the sanfl or the super14 etc and by entering the draft he has signed a contract to say he will play for whoever selects him.

off topic a bit:

if a player was selected in a draft and then elected to sit out the compulsory 2 seasons for whatever reason, could the player be liable for financial compensation to the said club?

We aren't living in communist Russia. Ball is free to talk or not to anyone.

It is also stupid to compare a draftee with no AFL experience to Ball, a player who can dictate his salary in the draft.

You're argumentative and nothing more.

You were about to launch a search for candidates to lead a Royal Commission Inquiry. Weren't you ? ;)

No. I was going to head it myself!

Just thought it was funny to catch the AFL seemingly turning the focus on possible draft-tampering, when they'd prefer that to happen so free agency could be held at bay.

Its a lose-lose scenario, albeit a minor one, but I just took great pleasure in the idea of Demetriou and Anderson scrambling around in damage control.

Unfortunately it was all in my head.

2 points for trying. Understand the scrambling around part by AA and AD. They wouldn't want it to blow up in their face would they ?

Why should Ball be any different to any other player with or without AFL experience if he enters the ND? Same rules for each person under a democracy.

Correct

Its against the law for the AFL to do that. What should be done is that upon entering the ND, that a player agrees upon the request of a Club to issue the medical records. The club would be bound by privacy and AFL sanctions not to issue them. The alternative is that the player agrees to submit himself for a medical report at each Club's expense.

What is the contractual loss?? If a player is prepared to sit out the compulsory 2 years, he should be prepared to sit out longer. The AFL should blackball the player for good.

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe
