Not really.

They made us pay over the odds for him. They screwed us big time even if they didn't get him in the end. They definitely wouldn't be crying themselves to sleep tonight.

Happy to have this over and done with......

Thanks to the club for keeping us all informed, and to Aaron for making the obviously correct decision, although we seem to have buckled on the terms (four year deal instead of three) under his apparent demands and his alleged threats of leaving. This is unfortunate and Jaded is right, I just hope we didn't pay too far over the odds to keep him. But this is what it is now.

But to those that were burning their memberships, you may just want to settle down in future and wait for the facts ^_^ !!!

Time to do unto others as they do to you ... ;)

This is a great thing... firstly for team morale....

but also bc we can afford to pay him over the odds this year and next, bc we are trying to find ways to fill our salary cap. Plus, in the last 2 years of his contract he will be going on to the veterans list, meaning even if we are still paying him over the odds only half of that will be going towrads to salary cap!

Thus, no matter how much we are paying him, even if we ARE paying him over the odds.... it makes absolutely no difference to our salary cap, which is really the thing supporters should be caring about.

The fact that Essendon might have made us pay him more is good for Davey, but doesn't negatively impact the demons in any way, as explained above

Yeah.

As an Essendon fan, I can't say I'm exactly shattered by this news.

In fact, very happy we are not locked into a 4 year deal, especially for the sort of dosh that was being reported.

A great result for Aaron, IMO a good result for Essendon, and probably a good result for MFC, except for those who were originally offering Davey a two year deal.

At least he will stay a one club player.

One cannot pay over the odds for Aaron Davey, it is impossible. Flash singing for 4 years, whilst maybe a year too long for some, will give that much more sense of stability for Aussie and Liam, particularly Liam. If 4 years is what it takes to keep him on, with a salary of what would be around 2.2 million, then i'd gladly give him it, knowing that we are not tight on salary cap, but more importantly, because it will keep Liam Jurrah at our club and he is invaluable.

I don't disagree with any of that, and if he keeps Jurrah at Melbourne, he is worth every cent.

However while our cap is not tight right now, you need to think 2/3/4 years from now when Watts, Morton, Grimes, Blease, Scully, Trengove, Jurrah, Frawley, Garland and so on are out of contract. It's fair to say that the worth of these players is equal, if not higher than that of Davey's and you need to pay them all accordingly.

Hopefully this means his contract is front loaded.

If we are paying 'over the odds' it is because of the fact that we have to reach 92.5% of the salary cap.

One extra year is not going to kill us.

But, it sets a dangerous precedent...

What the hell is that?!

OMG! It's a precedent.

They're dangerous!

Jesus!

Yeah?!

Get the Escalade. We're outta here!

A snippet from the MFC website;

"Entering his seventh season in 2010, Aaron will become the fifth most experienced player on Melbourne’s list, with 119 games under his belt".

That's why we needed to do what was required to get him to sign. Apart from the fact he is one of our "veterans", he has now got 4 years to develop even more leadership and possibly become a great captain for the Dees (assuming that was the sweetener in the deal). The "Brotherhood" wont be the only ones benefiting from his leadership, it shows SOME stability within the Club.

Thanks Flash, you have made my day.

*note - I have never made a post saying to let him go!

At first I thought 4 years was unreasonable, but it does offer Melbourne more of an opportunity to front load his contract. And If you had to sign one player for 4 years, it would be Davey.

when does Alwyn come out of contract? Maybe MFC can return the favour. ;)

I would look to return the favour. See if they have anyone we would like who could be available and if unsuccessful drive the price up.

If those players you mentioned are worthy of big pay increases in 3-4 years, EXCELLENT! Davey's contract will be close to finished, at minimum he will be on the Veterans List, so we will have more $$$ to play with again.

Actually i recall the "Davey Management" fuelled similar speculation (in reverse) when Alwyn did not automatically resign at start of 08.

I don't think we've been had at all - you have to pay for class

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
