First of all I would like to state that I have the upmost confidence in the upcoming trade and draft periods under Barry Prendergast and reckon we're in good hands.

Now.. for the topic.. Identification that a key weakness for the Dees is the lack of a Key POWER Forward (stating the obvious, I know).

I don't and will not subscribe to the notion that picking up a proven 'experienced' power forward is a bad or the wrong move because of the following..

What a player like Barry Hall / Daniel Bradshaw / Brendan Fevola could add to our forward line - to assist in the development of guys like Jurrah and Watts to not only learn from but take some of the initial heat off their maturing bodies by taking the key backman - should not be underestimated. And should such an option present itself in the pre-season draft, we have the available funds to take advantage of this situation should the situation permit. The issue is enticing such a player towards the end of their career to join an emerging team still in their infancy with limited short-term upside. This option is therefore unlikely because we want a player who is willing to give their all for the mighty dees.

CONSIDERATION - Matt Maguire can double as a key backman and as a strong lead-up forward who is known for his ability to take a strong grab overhead. The latter, I believe would pose greater benefit to the Dees. At age 25 could well be a consideration with our Pick 11 (assumed traded from Carlton for Brock) rather than taking a punt on KPF who may not cut the mustard.. i.e. end up with another Nick Smith / Luke Molan / Nick Gill scenario. With the Saints' abundance of riches in its backline as far as talls go, I imagine the Saints (who it appears increasing likely will reluctantly give up Matt Maguire) could do with pick 11 in the draft considering its first pick is 16 in what could be a win/win for both clubs.

Thoughts?

Pick 11 for a player who could not even get one run in the seniors all year?!?!

I think Maguire's market value would be around 3rd round.

MFC would not trade pick 11 for him in a million years.

has a rather checkered history staying on the park

We dont really need any more ongoing injury types at Melbourne...do we ? ;)

\\He played forward most of the year this year in vfl, he did look pretty good from what i saw.

I would take him with pic 18 if he can play the kpf role.

Dont no if he can.

Pick 34 is about right. I would consider picking him up with this pick if he is still available. I beleive he will be.

Remember he could not crack the senior team and is 25yo, thus 3rd round is about his worth.

Maguire is 3rd tall defender in line behind Sam Fisher (all-Australian) and Sam Gilbert (should have been all-australian) and couldn't get back into the team because there was no position for him (look at Max Hudghton and Zac Dawson situation). Talk to any St Kilda supporter and they'll tell you what Maguire means to the club and how good he is.

Injury history is the major concern, granted. But our medicos would do their due diligence. Maybe pick 18 swap and get 3 best available for 1, 2 and 11.

Love the idea because I really like the Goose but don't think Maguire is the answer up forward. 14 matches for 13 goals and in 2 of those matches kicked bags of 5.

If we need another forward we could play Green or Bruce in the forward line and then elevate Danny Hughes halfway through the year to give him a crack.

word has it he'd be fit to go in 426 !!

could be a good idea but i think pick 11 is abit generous...maybe 34 and miller or 34 and buckley

I know he HATES playing on the Dome, so maybe he would like the idea of playing on the G??.

A small little factor

If he nominates for the national draft and hes still around at 50..well..why not !! I wouldnt particularly go early.

A: The MFC must draw a line in the sand and not draft any more injury prone footballers.

B: We have four top draft picks which gets us the best young available talent in the country.

Of the 16 clubs of the AFL we are the ones least likely to need or want recycled players unless they come free or very cheap. Ie from the PSD or surplus from Geelong.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
