SHUTTLE RUN (AKA BEEP TEST)

The shuttle run is held on the basketball courts. Players must run 20 metres before hearing a beep. It starts off slowly and builds up rapidly, with players increasing their pace significantly. The beeps get quicker each time the players progress. It is a last man standing test. Each player gets one warning – if they miss one beep – they cannot afford to miss another one, as they will be disqualified from the shuttle run. An average draft camp run is level 13.3. Sam Blease, as you know-was taken pick 17, Born 19.02.91 Shown as 184 cms tall, 70 kls in weight.

Sam is a very good skillful player, however in short spurts- moreover as a winger/ half forward flank. However will develop as he grows and develops, especially stamina.

Scully, is a gut busting runner similar to a Judd type. Scully will break some of these other footballers. Will blend brilliantly with Maloney , Jones and Sylvia. I personally think Sylvia, after this preseason will be something special. And after seeing what Fevola has done- will be more interested to give his best as a footballer.

I think that was just the way the article was written... he pulled up at 15.5 meaning he didn't continue rather than was stopped because there is no reason to stop a player and 15.5 is damn high

The new kicking test gets it's first batch of results:

By Jason Phelan 12:45 PM Thu 01 October, 2009

THE NEWEST addition to the NAB AFL Draft Camp's battery of tests, the kicking assessment, has been unveiled in front of a crowd of curious onlookers in blustery conditions on day three of the camp in Canberra.

The new test is the brain child of former AIS-AFL Academy mentor Nathan Buckley, who undertook a study into junior talent development at the request of the AFL, and found coaches and recruiters believed it to be an area that was lacking at the League's showpiece talent evaluation event.

The new drill caused plenty of nerves at the camp with one draft hopeful admitting he had been up at 3am worrying about it, but it was generally well-received. Draft prospects Gary Rohan, Dustin Martin, Matthew Panos, Justin Bollenhagen and Anthony Delborello were among those to impress.

Rohan, a Geelong Falcon who is already a top five prospect, further enhanced his chances with his performance despite admitting to some nerves.

"It was a bit hard with the wind in front of all the AFL coaches and the recruiters that are here," Rohan said.

"It's pretty hard, but you've just got to concentrate. Just look where you're kicking it to and listen to the fella handballing it to you. You just need to block everything else out.

"Me and my brother back home tried this drill. We've got these trees back home and we'd just try and hit the tree."

Buckley was in the crowd as the drill took place and he was happy with what he saw despite the conditions.

"We don't want it to be blustery, it's not blustery all the time, but dealing with the conditions is part of being a good kick as well," Buckley said.

"It's in its infancy but it's a start. It's something that needed to happen.

"This test may not be here next year, there might be something better, and we hope that there is because we want to make sure that whatever is in place is going to separate the great kicks from the poorer kicks.

"It's the beginning of what we'd like to see continue in terms of measuring skills in the game like kicking and handballing."

A player performing the test gets six kicks. He faces away from the target range of six two-metre wide circles on the ground, runs in to receive a handball from the caller who at the same time calls out one of the targets at random.

These are short left or right (20m), middle left or right (30m) and long left or right (40m).

The player must turn around a cone and hit the teammate standing inside that target within the allotted time with points awarded from one to five for each kick with a five earned when the teammate marks the ball without moving.

The test is taped so AFL recruiters can further break down a player's kicking action, but Buckley believed the major upside of the test would be seen in years to come.

"The real benefit for me is for a 13 or 14-year-old who is thinking about an AFL career and wants to be recognised and wants to be the best he can be," he said.

"He knows now that in three or four years time he's going to be measured on his kicking and that's important.

"If I'm [that kid] I know that I'm going to have to work on my kicking because its going to be judged when the recruiters have a look and decide whether I've got an AFL career or not."

Just been told the standout at thecamp is Sam Reid- brother of Ben at Collingwood whom has been a defender for the last 12 months who played CHB for Vic country and Murray Bushrangers-192 -84-(27/12/910 whom excelled in the beep test 14.8 as well as other events.Martin also did well. Full results will be tabled tomorrow.

A guy Braydon Norris from Murray Bushrangers- did a beep test of 15.7.

Brayden Norris (Murray Bushrangers, VIC)

Height: 186cm, Weight: 69kg, DOB: 27/11/91

Recruited from: Alexandra F/C

Hard-running forward whose strong hands on the lead are a clear strength. Pace off the mark and sound endurance make him tough to match up on.

Gotta love people who use hindsight as evidence.

Evidence for what?

I was basically quoting what BP said, 'in hindsight he should done his homework on Jetta' -he pretty much said that himself..

Did you even bother to read the article? <_<

Your assessment might be right but the quote indicates that someone pulled him up at 15.5, rather than he pulled up at 15.5:

"It is a pity we won't see him do his beep test but he did one up here when he was at the AIS and he had to be pulled up at 15.5," Sheehan said.

Yes we could have rookied him, but I think McKenzie was a very good rookie choice

Jetta's being touted as a top 15 pick, and perhaps as high as #7 according to the aforementioned article.

While McKenzie's got a good wrap from CC, if McKenzie had been overlooked last year I doubt he would warrant a first-round pick in 2009.

Nice one. Giving BP a large bake for not doing his homework, but getting Jetta's name wrong. Twice.

The guy doesn't get paid to know about draftees - I reckon this is a bit harsh.

He's one that got away and I'd love to hear BP's thoughts on what he did to follow up when told by about Lewis Jetta by Neville Jetta's mother. The answer might be nothing, but the answer might be that he followed up and just didn't think the kid looked any good.

Did you read the article? Without further ado, the thougths of BP:

''We drove away. I was busy working through all our picks, and Lewis was a kid from Bunbury I'd never seen play. Then the start of the year came along, he started dominating for Swan District seniors, and I said to John: 'He was sitting right in front of us! We could have rookie listed him at No. 70!'

''So we watched him play, and he's obviously lightning quick and got a lot of talent. At that point, it was probably one of those things where you're so busy sorting through the draft, that you're not really looking for the smoky."

Kid in a lollie shop. What can I get with my 6d?

I'm glad I'm not a recruiter for the dees. I think it would be an easier job doining it for a top 4 team but damn our boy is on a hiding to nothing. If he gets the two best he's earnt his dough but if he doesn't he is a spud that shall be boo'd forever. Better him than me.

Besides, if we took Jetta with our last pick in 2008, we wouldn't have had space on the list to participate in the PSD and would have missed out on Jurrah. I know who I'd rather have, with all due respect to Jetta.

We could've rookied him instead of Healey.

We could have rookied Leroy Jetta at pick 70!!! FFS ..and he wants to play at MFC!!!

Bad miss BP, should have taken the tip and done homework on Leroy! He even said he missed it. He kicked 12 gls in a game just a few weeks b4 BP co-incidently met him, 12 gls from a wing.

..and now he might go top 10!

Evidence for what?

I was basically quoting what BP said, 'in hindsight he should done his homework on Jetta' -he pretty much said that himself..

I did read the article. You're having a whinge that we didn't pick up "Leroy" - I'm saying you most likely didn't know who "Leroy" was last year and are now crying foul.

FWIW, every club missed him last year. What does that tell you?

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
