Story on SEN this morning as told by Tim Watson, it is an excerpt taken from the new Porks book. Apparently several years ago, Clarkson related to his thus far winnless team of how Jack Viney (then aged 12) stepped in to help a mate of his who was being bullied. The bully was older and much bigger than him but he would not back down and by all accounts when the bully took a swing at him young Jack hit him so hard he broke his own hand! Can we draft him now??

I mentioned this in the father/son thread i am friends with jack viney on facebook and from what i can see of photos and comments etc he is going to be a GUN, with him trengove and scully we are going to have an awesome midfield in 5 or 6 years time. Another plus is he seems to have a good head on his shoulders for his age too which is also fantastic just like our other "jacks" in the team. Cant wait to see him in the red and blue!!!

So he's Barry Hall's Mini-me only more injury prone is what you're saying. I'm not sure that's the type we really want at our club.

NORTH Adelaide has beaten Sturt in the race to sign 14-year-old Jack Viney - son of Melbourne Football Club legend, Todd.

The sought-after teenager will play in the Roosters’ under-16 team this year, rather than following in his father’s footsteps at Sturt where he won an under-19s premiership and played 45 League games in the 1980s.

Viney Jnr qualified to play at Sturt under the SANFL’s father-son rule, but the midfielder has instead chosen to don the red and white where his uncles Jay and Ryan both played.

Jay Viney - who also played at Melbourne - captained the Roosters in the late 90s and this year his son, Harry, is part of the club’s under-13 squad.

``Jack trained with the club (North), enjoyed the environment and felt comfortable,’’ Todd Viney said.

``He also trained at Sturt and possibly they’d be disappointed.

``But we’re looking to live over that side of town (closer to Prospect) so when we added everything together, we thought North Adelaide was the better option.’’

Viney Jnr played at Carey Grammar School in Melbourne last year and has joined his family in Adelaide after Todd became an assistant coach with the Crows.

The midfielder - who turns 15 in April - is now going to school at Prince Alfred College where he will also play football.

``Once we found out Todd was coming to the Crows we took that opportunity to have a chat with him,’’ North Adelaide development manager Neil Sanders said.

``We met with (senior coach) Daniel Healy and explained what we had to offer and he (Todd) was pretty impressed with the set up.’’

The year a player turns 15 they are eligible to be signed and Sanders said there was no payment involved in securing Viney’s signature.

``He’s got a big future. He’s a determined type of player, strongly built and attacks the ball and the man.

``From what we’ve seen on the track he’d be in the top two for his age at our club.

``The way he goes about it - he’s very hard at the ball and that was one of Todd’s features.’’

But the decision has shattered the Double Blues

``We’re bitterly disappointed Todd has taken his son to North Adelaide, given he’s an ex Sturt footballer,’’ Sturt’s football operations manager Duane Massey said.

``It’s so important for our football club to retain kids in our zone and sons of past players.

``And we’re proud that Todd came from Sturt before he went to the AFL and nothing would have pleased us more than to see Jack in a Sturt jumper.

``Our under-17s won the Grand Final last year and under-19s played in the Grand Final. So I don’t know what more we could do with our junior program.’’

Carey Grammar principal Phil De Young said Viney Jnr was ``the real McCoy’’

``He’s a chip off the old block,’’ De Young said.

``He’s really strong and he can play. He’s got good skills either side of his body and he is genuinely tough. He pushes others off the ball.

``Last year he was in Year 8 and we played him in the Year 9 team and he was in the best two players every week.’’

Todd played 233 VFL/AFL games at the Demons and was a two-time best-and-fairest winner in 1993 and 1998. In `98 he was also named in the AFL’s All Australian Team and finished equal fifth in the Brownlow Medal.

Last year he was an assistant coach under Alastair Clarkson at AFL premier Hawthorn.

Barry belted blokes who weren't ready for it, clearly this was an act of courage where the bloke he hit was looking for trouble... But u know betta hey? Footy experts say he's a genuine prospect, see the article from earlier in the year posted here... And before u or any1 else gets on their high horse and says it is never acceptable to hit sum1, ur living in a very sheltered world, sum people r looking for a fight even if the other person has dun nothin more than b in the wrong place at the wrong time, I know cause it's happened to me, I wish my mate who was there and was a big enuf lad to have helped had half this kids bravery

Considering he has no physical handicaps, yes he can physically do all those things..... Or did u mean 'can he do these things well?' LOL

I haven't seen him first hand but from all reports, can play and would in the top percentile of his age bracket in the country, but a few years is a long time in footy so by the time he's eligible who knows, he may keep breaking his hand and never get on the park! Ha!

I think we can all b optimistic we'll possibly get a good f/s from this, but he's already rejected one of his fathers former clubs, it's like everythin in life, there r no g'tees... But let's dare to dream in the meantime (without all the kill joys on this site, like that'll EVA happen)!

1 - It's called the English language. You should learn it some time.

2 - He broke his hand on the other guys face, hence the injury-prone line.

3 - Grow a sense of humour you muppet. Of course the kid's a gun.

A Google search revealed that Jack Viney was the youngest member of this year's SA under-16 state side that competed at the national carnival.

He was up to 15 months younger than some of his teammates and at least five months younger than anyone else.

If nothing else, it's an indication that Todd's son is a precocious talent.

On the bright side I think that when he is old enough for the draft our 1st round pick will be in the teens.

Todd's originally from Adelaide, but he has spent a lot of time in Victoria whilst at Melbourne and Hawthorn etc Jack also has spent many years at schools in Melbourne. Todd's family are only currently in Adelaide owing to Todd getting a gig at Adelaide. Jack would not have any issue in relocating to Melbourne.

Incorrect. Viney decided to move back to Adelaide for Family reasons and his position at the AFC is subsequent to that decision.

I believe that he wanted his kids in Adelaide for their final school years.
