Round 22

Recommended Posts

In our last round match this year, there are two things the club can do:

1. Play Wheatlwey, Whelan &(Robbo) in farewell Matches

2. Play 3 Kids in a first game against the Top Side to give them a taste of what level we must aspire to.

Having thought about this i think the Club should Put Wheats, Whelan & Russel (If he is infact leaving) into some open topped Volvo's & give them a lap around the ground with Highlights on the Board.

Play the kids & give them experience. I know its Harsh But imagine how much better those 3 kids will be in this upcoming pre-season, having been out there.

Remember Frank Grimes played in that awful Round 22 Match last year for a first time-did him the world of good.

Thoughts??

Sounds like Wheatley and Whelan will struggle to be fit anyway. If they are fit play them, they deserve a farewell game. Obviously if Robbo is fit play him as well. There isn't really anyone left to give a taste of senior footy to anyway. It would be good if Buckley can get out there for a game.

I'm hoping that Wheels comes up this week and plays the last two to get to his 150.

Wheatley sounds as if he's struggling and likely won't get fit in time for round 22, and with Robbo, i figure select him on merit if he performs against the Blues.

Would like to give 3 young kids a run, but would be good for the club to give 3 long-time servants the send-off they deserve. And our list is crumbling to pieces in regards to injury, so we may just have to play whoever's fit.

This club has been to "clingy" Towards sentiment & our past glories for too long. I think it's time to start a new page.

I am sure we have a couple of kids on the Cusp waiting for a game.

Give them a game against Ross Lyon's Saints, Best Learning Curve one could have.

Wheaters & Wheels Deserve a Football Club Dinner-there playing days are over.

It does not look like the two "W"s will be fit so give them an open top ride around the boundary before the game and let Robbo have a last game send off. If he plays like yesterday, he is not exactly being a passenger and he may just kick a few, you never know.

I think that Rnd 22 is a homegame & as such would be good to send off the players ending their onfield efforts with us, remember these players have been longterm servants of our club & deeserve a proper send off.

It would be different if there was a lot riding on this game, but not this year, so IMO, give them the parting gesture from the fans.

PS: I'd like to see all available indigenous boys in the team to send off Matty Whelan.

What's to stop us playing all three as a send off match, and playing some kids also to give them a chance.

We can do both and rest some of our regulars.

We'll get beaten regardless of whether we play the vets or the kids, why not play both?

Maybe do both - and leave out the likes of Brock, Jones, Moloney, Aaron - meaningless game anyway.

1. As it is at the MCG it would be fitting to give the retiring players (if fit) a send off match in Round 22.

2. As for playing the kids, haven't we been doing that so far!!! I dont think there are any more players we can possibly debut who are likely to play on next year.

What about Blease? He maybe a little slow with the cast and crutches and all but he'll be better for the taste of the bigtime. We MUST get games into these lads!

We don't have 3 kids left! Our team is a bunch of kids and at a quick recount, Hughes is the only one who we doulc debut - a silly thing to do given that it would cost us extra cash, we won't learn much about him and he's off the rookie list this year.

Whelan deserves at least one send off game, he has been our best defender of the last decade. Not giving him a farewell, if fit, is not harsh but cruel IMO.

I'm also not so sure that Round 22 game did Grimes the world of good, he's just that good! There's no reason to think he wouldn't be as good without having played.

IMO that round 22 game that Frank played was great for him. He Had all summer pre-season to be able to know in his head how hard it was going to be.

I am sure he would have been ok anyway, but by having that one game under his belt meant he was ready for that first piece of Tough play or big hit this season.

If we don't have any young players ready, thats fair enough. It was just a thought i had last night.

These next 2 games are truly experimental, use them wisely.

Next year i am barracking for all out wins. No excuses.

We should aim for position 8 next year. With another solid pre season this side has some talent.

IMO, Bailey would've learnt all he could about the players on the list over the past two seasons.

Whelan especially deserves a send off, as does Robbo and Wheatley. I think Hughes is the only player left, and as I've said that doesn't make sense to do.

It's not so much about Bailey Learning, its that first game for our young players. If they can get through it without having Stage Fright & Panic Attacks (Remember the Cockatoo-Collins twins...What a nightmare that game was) If a First Gamer can make a solid contribution, then hey it's possible his career is Rolling.

Maybe we should play Robbo at Full Back & wheels in the forward pocket during Round 22

Don't want them to play too well-the scores may get a little close!!

Only fit player i havent seen yet is Zomer

Seems to struggle to get into the Casey Seniors so might be way out of his depth at AFL

I believe in send off games as a respect to both the player and the supporters

Ok, I'll ask the invevitable question:

Who will you play?

I havent seen enough casey games to make that call 45. I am just not a huge fan of the "Must Have" Send off Game, never have been.

I think the Lap of Honour & a Testimonial Dinner are more suited to retirements.

But if there are no more young kids waiting in the wings then play the old boys for sure.

We are about to embark on our first Serious Tilt at a Flag since '64, i want the club to do what's best for that opportunity.

The Young Players should be Hungry for more over summer. This next Pre Season is Critical to ward making the club strong in all departments.

I'd be disappointed for Whelan if he got stranded on 149. I definitely hope he gets up for both weeks. Retiring on 150 would be fitting -- just a pity he won't be able to celebrate it with a win.

All three should definitely play in round 22 though if they are able, especially given it's at the MCG.

If we were vying for finals I wouldn't play players on sentiment, but in this case I would.

As we are not in the finals race this year then MFC should take this opportunity to honour and acknowledge retiring players who have given 10+ years service to the Club.

Its send an important message to younger players and recognises players who in their own way have been role models and leaders at the Club.

Which kids did you have in mind playing??

I'd be disappointed if Wheels and Wheat didnt get a game should they be fit. Hopefully they get over their injuries and have one last run around the G.

If there are any young players who need a game, then give them a game too. But I think it would be good for club morale to give loyal servants a game to go out on. It might be token but we're not playing finals, so give them a game I say.

A strong club honours those that fought hard for it.

Paul, Wheels, and Robbo deserve to be chaired off for what they have brought to the club.

We are in a position to give them that 'soft' game and we should give it to them.

We have utilised more youth than Hitler this year and every one on the list bar Strauss and Blease having been seen in a Demons jumper over the last two years is a good effort, and even 3 rookies have played games.

some of the comments in this thread are ridiculous...

lets play 3 kids... what kids? who is left? Zomer and Hughes if fit are the only 2 who would possibly be available that haven't worn the red and blue...

People talk about giving Whelan and Wheatley a "soft" game... Surely if Zomer gets a game it is a much "softer" game than one for Whelan or Wheats who have earned about 280 games between them on merit in the past...

Give these players, great servants of the club, the send off they deserve... Even if they're injured, give them a jab, and let them run around aka Adam Simpson...

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
