I'd be disappointed for Whelan if he got stranded on 149. I definitely hope he gets up for both weeks. Retiring on 150 would be fitting -- just a pity he won't be able to celebrate it with a win.

All three should definitely play in round 22 though if they are able, especially given it's at the MCG.

If we were vying for finals I wouldn't play players on sentiment, but in this case I would.

Yes Nasher, totally agree with you. Lets give 'em a big sendoff.

We've a;ready dudded Wheels on one 150, we shouldn't do it twice (if he's up for playing this week).

Agreed.

All 3 guys deserve proper, dignified farewell matches at the MCG in front of our members (whoever turns up <_< ).

Even if we had 3 kids to play in their place, which we don't, one less development game for the sake of giving these guys what they deserve for 10+ years of service, is a very worthwhile consequence.

I'd be [censored] off if Newton or Zomer or even Watts get a game ahead of Robbo in Round 22 and I miss out on seeing him that one last time. I'm sure plenty of supporters would feel the same in regards to all/any of the three.

The club should honour the players if fit by playing them in Rd 22. Grimes was played last year in the last round to give him a taste of AFL prior to an important pre season development. It was an important move in Grimes development by Bailey, by giving him goals to aspire to and work on aspects of his game over the summer. Bailey has since said as much as has Connolly.

We should LOSE

What the hell are you talking about?!

Read the thread, not just the title.

And I hope you are not infering that we should go out of our way to lose, we are last and they are first...

We will LOSE.

Posted (edited)
some of the comments in this thread are ridiculous...

lets play 3 kids... what kids? who is left? Zomer and Hughes if fit are the only 2 who would possibly be available that haven't worn the red and blue...

People talk about giving Whelan and Wheatley a "soft" game... Surely if Zomer gets a game it is a much "softer" game than one for Whelan or Wheats who have earned about 280 games between them on merit in the past...

Give these players, great servants of the club, the send off they deserve... Even if they're injured, give them a jab, and let them run around aka Adam Simpson...

And what happens if the team are "up" for these retiring servants. And the game is won?? 5 wins puts us right back on our backside for the next 5 years. This whole thing must be managed very carefully,

We were conned in 2007 doing "The right Thing" i do not want that scenario repeated, i am a little concerned that's all.

Sometimes sentiment can backfire badly with only us to blame.

If St.kilda lose they will still finish Top o the ladder.

Tread carefully Demons

Easy there. It would hurt, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. Last place still gets us Scully. That's the big one. pick 2 as well is great, but it wouldn't kill us to miss out.

I would be Gutted if Robbo Kicked 6, won the game & then went & played for another Team.

Wouldn't we look stupid, once again....memories of mark riley come flooding back.

If it were up to me i would be ringing the caterers for a testamonial dinner. But thats just me

Good Grief. Talk about missing the wood for the trees.

The retirees did not win the game for us. We played a side that was hell bent on losing the game. I think the scenario is much different now

Start investigating issues like no tag on TJ who accumulates 40+ possessions.

What's the odds of an asteroid hitting the earth this year?

Its a different scenario so take a Bex and lie down.

Make sure you know why we lost. ;)

Look I have seen too many upsets to take this for granted. However I do recognise there are differences in the 2007 situation.

But I would be sure we wont tag the best 4 in the Carlton midfield and we wont double team Fev.

I wont be happy until Round 22 finishes.

Your nervousness is shared...but for different reasons.

I was there in 2007 & saw Trapper Run Free, Yes the circumstances are different, But i am sure Wrecker Wheats & Robbo have a lot of respect from their team mates, so i am just very concerned that we may get one of those games where the Demons look a million Dollars in one afternoon.

Save That Form for next year, is what i am hoping.

It's not like we have so many fit players that we can't fit 'the kids' in if we play Wheels, Wheatley and Robertson.

I highly doubt Wheatley will be fit though.

It seems you're changing tack - in your earlier posts in this thread it was all about letting go of sentiment.

Maybe do both - and leave out the likes of Brock, Jones, Moloney, Aaron - meaningless game anyway.

I can't see Davey missing the farewell game for Wheels, all reports are he has been a fantastic mentor for him

Not at all, i would not play the 3 of them myself. But if they are played in that last game I could invisage a big effort from the team that's all.

Which would be most detrimental to our immediate future.

Given each player has played 10 years or more how could you leave one player out and the other player in. You are trying to micromanage the irrelevant with no plausible impact on the outcome.

You forget Carlton will be looking to win for a top 4 spot regardless of MFC effort.

We dont tag Judd, Stevens, Murphy anf Gibbs and give Fev room to move.

Its definitely manageable so long as Carlton turns up on the day.

Ime not Talking about the carlton game at all. Round 22 at the MCG RR is where i have a little concern.

And where did isay i would play one but not the others?? I wouldn't play all three & give them a lap of Honour is what i would do,

My second sad stat for the week:

In the last 3 years of his career, Matthew Whelan will have played in two victories.

Replace the Carlton players and put in the name of the best 6 at St Kilda and dont tag them.

Oops. Sorry. :(

Even so I dont know why you wouldn't play them. Our best is still below St Kilda's worst by a distance.

It's not so much about Bailey Learning, its that first game for our young players. If they can get through it without having Stage Fright & Panic Attacks (Remember the Cockatoo-Collins twins...What a nightmare that game was) If a First Gamer can make a solid contribution, then hey it's possible his career is Rolling.

Maybe we should play Robbo at Full Back & wheels in the forward pocket during Round 22

Don't want them to play too well-the scores may get a little close!!

I cannot conceivably compare the Cockatoo twins with any players on our current list - that, with and probably without the benefit of hindsight, was a bizzare selection for what was I think for at least on eof them, a first round pick - can't remember where the second wtin came from. They ended up with maybe 6 games between them.

I think we're running in circles here. One of the few positives of being outside of the finals is that it affords you the chance to farewell your players properly. It'd be insulting and ridiculous to leave someone like Robbo out of the side in Round 22 if he's fit. And for what? To confirm that Buckley can't kick or that Miller isn't going to be the 75-goal key forward we're after? Rhino's already pointed out that there really aren't many options when scouring the list to find players to bring in anyway. The three players not to play this season are all out of action. In any event, the supporters who have sat through three years of bile deserve to send off some of our favourites with a farewell game. We didn't get to with Lyon, Stynes, Neitz or Schwarz for starters, and that's disappointing. These farewells are part of the emotion and experience of following footy. We as supporters aren't droids, and I for one would feel cheated if I didn't get to farewell the trio and Robbo in particular in a fortnight's time. A lap around the G in a Volvo simply doesn't cut the mustard I'm afraid.

You are probably right, but as we haven't played st.kilda this year, & they haven"t played at the G at all, which is a disgrace in itself.

For this reason it could be a loose cannon result. Maybe i am being to paranoid but we are so close to achieving the long term goals of this year, i don't want to give any chances,

The weather could play a factor as well!!

We are talking St.kilda remember-They are in unknown Territory themselves!

We played them in Round 10 on the GC but its surprising they had not played at the G this year. However they are not pack of GC first years and I cant see that issue causing them to fall over.

Unless Noah has to build an Ark I cant see the weather helping us.

We are talking St Kilda and not Freo.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
