Bell,Maric out for year

Well these lads have gone under the knife to fix their ails. In so doing there must I presume now be a vacuum of two positions in the list.

As part of the assumed strategy of Bailey to somehow orchestrate the 'correct' result by seasons end who is now likely or left to fill a couple of pairs of boots. Might we see Hughes and McKenzie get a gig ?

What's the financial cost of elevating a rookie? If the club thinks its worth the $X to elevate one or both to have a look at them for the future, then great.

aplogies for double posting..lol.. dang pc.hopefully a mod will delete other.pls..;)

Im sure whatever costs are involved teh club would have to view them as part of a greater picture, if you get my drift :)

Long term injury is 8 weeks, but there are only 7 games left, does that stop you from promoting a rookie to replace the injured?

Posted

only my lay appeciation but I thought the idea of long term definition was so a rookie could be elevated for the time other player is out. If only 7 games left well..I would have thought its all but there for an automatic lifting at the clubs descretion ( and budget). Surely every club is able to fill its list (numerically ) at all times ?

I'd be really disappointed with the club if Hughes didn't at least an opportunity at AFL level. He's shown some really good signs for Casey this year with his marking and attack on the ball. Why not give hime 4 or 5 weeks to see what he can do?

I would hope so, makes the most sense.

Well,as I see it, its a bit of a win win..( or is that win/lose/win lol ) thing . elevate a couple, give them a run, see what they can or cant do. Yes, deary me it might dilute the ongoing strength of that winning team (cough ,splutter, laugh) but it actually has a real benefit in garnering information.

Surely this type of thinking must be prevalent currently in minds of the footy dept as it endeavours to fathom the likley scenarios resulting from managing it's list !!

I too would like to see what Hughes can do.. Not sure if Jordie is quite ready but are you ever?? You just taake opportunities when they're there. Grimes came in late last year and was a bit rough around edges and we of course know how he has come along. Maybe a littel time on the padock can serve well for a couple of guys whilst not actually harming the result, so to speak.

Doesn't it cost something like $40,000 to elevate a rookie?

probably...not sure if theres a pro-rata involved now...but even so.. 80000 as an Investment ( of sorts ) in a Premiership is scheckles well spent ;)

There's a new rule this year, where clubs are allowed to play their rookies without elevating them after round 11... Part of the compensation for the Gold Coast getting all the draft picks coming up...

So we don't have to elevate anyone, if they want to play any of the rookies, they'll play...

you obviously still have to pay them match fees if they get a game, whereas older players may not be paid per game they play... so there is some expense involved...

I think we're going to see quite a few youngsters in the team over the next 7 weeks. We won't win 2 more games.

Wish i was as confident.

If the financial impact wasn't severe, I'd look at elevating and playing as many rookies as possible (especially McKenzie and Hughes). Great way to see where they are at, the club gets to assess their positions on the list, and it helps us with 'list management'. You can only glean so much information from VFL form.

Really I thought all players on the list were paid there base contract plus $x for senior games and $x for ressie games...

Would like to see both Hughes and McKenzie have a run over the end of the season. Show them what AFL is like and see if they can make it to the next level or not.

well obviously...but possibly not as an expensive exercise as compared the probable benefits.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
