    I spoke to a client today, who has a connection to the Watts family. Apparently, Paul Connors (Watts' manager) has been desperately trying to convince Jack to get a deal done with Carlton. However, after meeting with Roos on a couple of occasions now, Jack has been so impressed that he will almost definitely re-sign.

    The manager stands to make a lot more if he goes to Carlton. There are plenty of little brown bags to go around, plus jobs at Visy and sponsorships.

    Roos is just the man/coach/life coach for JW.

    He has done itI all. Moved clubs etc,,

    Totally agree with this. Even if you look at the way Roos played the game, he wasn't overly physical but he held his own, didn't shirk and could stand tall and take the contested pack mark when it was there to take. He would be a great playing model for Jack to emulate.

    I find it funny that people are starting to question our forward line and where Watts fits. To me it is simple, he is a half forward flack and that is the position that Jack Watts is best suited to at this stage of his physical development. I see him and Howe rotating of HFF/wing and pushing deep forward for a spell. The only tall forward we have that is that traditional tall forward is Chris Dawes, you look at Watts, Clark, Hogan and even Fitzpatrick they are agile and good at ground level.

    I get exited seeing Paul Roos at our club and I'm sure he is exited to have a foward line lining up

    Well he seems to have put on a bit of muscle (I think) so that's a start.

    Like the rest of the team - needs a big offseason.

    We all know he will be a long term prospect but lets just hope the appointment of Roos means the end of the Cale Morton/Cook/Gysberts days.

    I wouldn't be surprised if Roos tries to turn him into a Mundy type mid.

    I see our forward and back tall stocks as being adequate and Roos has stated a 3 talls at each end and the rest running through the midfield. Combine this with his stated wish of midfield depth and I think it's def possible it will happen.

    Watts will play wing, high half forward i reckon. Which i in this day and age is part of the mid field.

    Interesting interview with Mick Turner (ex cats champ) on SEN last night. He was saying how in his day there was a huge emphasis on players needing to be physical whereas today whilst it is important to have players who get the ball, outside runners are crucial. He said receivers were key players in modern footy.

    Turner reckons he would thrive in today's footy as he was an outside player who could run fast all day (he noted that in today's footy if you can't run all day - ie be a super athlete - you'll never play AFL). Also interesting that Turner pushed forward in his last 3 years and and kicked 40-50 goals in those seasons.

    I could see Watts in a similar role, certainly as an outside receiver type but also one that pushes forward. As i have said previously i'd set his KPI as score assists.

    Mine for Watts - if he is on a wing - would be defensive acts (tackles, smothers, blocks, spoils, etc) and uncontested possessions.

    In fact, for most of the midfield it would be those two KPIs, plus stoppage numbers and opposition UPs.

    I agree that those would all be important KPIs for him. I'd also include inside 50's and rebound 50's and an avergae of a goal a game. What i meant was his key KPI (if that makes sense) should be score assists as his strength is his kicking and our forwards will need good supply.

    On Talking footy (i think) they highlighted how important Hawthorns kicking skill was in terms of setting up goals, showing several examples of pin point passes from the wing/half forward. As it stands Watts is our only elite kick and it makes sense fro him to play a key role in spotting up our forwards. I'd be tempted to play Strauss on the other side for the same reason.

    BH, I regard you as one of the best posters on this site.

    It's possible, however, that your assessment of Watts is not entirely on the money.

    Surely you should reassess your view on Watts given Roos assessment of him, particularly given that you clearly rate Roos.

    Does anyone feel Jetta could be moulded in to that defensive fwd type player. his defensive effort is very good. doesnt get much footy but does he have potential?

    Defensive forwards are over rated as are the so called small forwards. All players on the ground now are expected to put on defensive pressure. If you are spending any time in the forward line I would expect you to kick goals, nothing hurts a defender more and puts doubt in his mind. A forward who is just there to tag a defender is a waist of space and the defender has 3/4 of his job done for him.

    A long winded way of saying Jetts doesn't hit the scoreboard.

    A lot of tweets doing the rounds at the moment saying "Announcement soon... Jack Watts to remain at the Demons" - no mention of a date or time.

    still have my doubts on him, just watching r22 now, early in the third Howe kicked it to him on the lead, kick was shanked meaning a constested ball contest. He got first hands on it in heavey traffic, but as soon as he did his head shot up to see the would-be tackler, promptly flinched and the ball slipped out of hands, losing possession. He is not fumbly at all, it was purely the pressure and anticipation of getting hit. Somebody like Hurley would not have looked at anyone, just made sure he took possession cleanly and smashed/baulked his way through the tacklers to dish it off. It was one of those situations where the tacklers were sort of flat-footed and a big man should be able to get enough freedom to at least get his hands free to dispose. Such a tiny difference in conduct but such a massive difference in the result. There are bigger more obvious things like this that he does, but there are also many smaller ones like this that go unnoticed/unmentioned.


    Watts wrong with me, why am i not even the slightest excited by this. I have to admit it confounds me as I was a great fan initially and still think he has great ability, just for some reason I cant seem to give a stuff.

    I am excited by this, i saw some really good signs of improvement in Jack this year, and still believe he will get much better especially under Roos.

    Lets not attack him over his contract, as if he stays, that is all that matters on that issue.

    He just said publicly what everyone was thinking.

    The next step is to hit the gym and and become more aggressive on the field.

      Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

      Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
