According to Mike Sheahan's article in today's Herald Sun, Cale Morton is high up on the shopping list of GC recruiting manager Scott Clayton - LET'S GO SHOPPING

"He loves the Robert Murphy type: 184-192cm athletes with pace, skill and sound disposal.

Which is why Melbourne's second-year player Cale Morton is so high on his list.

When Melbourne took Morton at No. 4 in the 2007 national draft, Clayton supposedly had him at No. 1 on his wish list.

Given his stated aim is to have the competition's best player by 2014, Morton would be a priority.

The Melbourne youngster will be hard to shift. He has a bright future with the Demons and also has his two brothers, Mitch and Jarryd, living and playing in Melbourne."

Too right he will be hard to shift and I hope the club works damn hard to secure Cale at the club for a long, long time.

he is not for sale, if he is out of contract sign him up quickly, once he puts on size he will really start to dominate games

Scott Clayton is no dill, of course he's going to go after great young talent and Morton would be right up there. We need to get on the front foot and negotiate with them (GC17) and our players and their managers to ensure that if we do lose a player then it's on our terms. That way we can inflate his value by playing him more etc

Not exactly a great surprise here.........

I would consider trading him for all of GC's picks. But I'd probably still say no.

Sorry correct me if I am wrong but does Melbourne and Cale have to agree to this or do they just say " We want you"?

If he is contracted we have to trade. If not then they can take him and we get a crappy consolation pick.

He still has to want to go..if he doesnt then all bets are off

 I'd agree with that.

Seriously though, what if Clayton/GC17 offered picks 2 and 8 for Morton? "No Deal?"

Unfortunately for GC, Cale is a little too tall and doesn't fit Clayton's criteria.

There are going to be some really [censored] off supporters when all the deals are done. Prepare yourselves for 1: Losing a player we desperately don't want to lose & 2: Getting less than we want for them.

I did read somewhere that players were going to be grouped into categories, something like:

First half of the first round

Second half of the first round

Second round....

and so on.

Absolute minimum for Cale would be that first category, and we'd still be stiffed.

Bingo, lets not forget that it doesn't matter if you are out of contract at the end of next year, if you don't want to go then the gc17 can simply get stuffed. Players need to agree to the move. Who in their right mind would leave the MFC in 2 years time, just when we are starting to come good. All to chase some more coin??? Please, i have a little more faith in our younger boys. They should also be reminded that $250,000 alone is a shitload of money for a yearly salary.

cale wont go. and if he is contracted then he is safe from being traded. thats how i understand it. Otherwise, Gold COast will just say give me Franklin, Judd, Ablett and Selwood. Doesn't work like that. We only have to worry if they are not under contract.

If you lose an uncontracted player to GC17 against your will, the club will be compensated with a draft pick. The position of the draft pick will be determined by the status of the player, ie; salary, finishing position in b&f.

The club still has the choice to trade an uncontracted playet to GC17.

Geez. 22 touches and the half isn't even close to over. Sign him up!

Perhaps I missheard this but I'm pretty sure I heard a commentator say a week or two ago that Morton's family has also moved over to Melbourne. Can someone please confirm this if true as it could be a factor for him (along with his brothers being in Melbourne as previously mentioned).

Confirmed.

If Morton signed with GC17, my metaphoric wrists would be slashed. Well and truly.

That said, I'm extremely confident he'll stay with us.

correct me if I am wrong but when players are drafted they are given a standard 2yr deal.

Therefore he is out at the end of this year and not next year so the only way GC17 can get is if we trade or only sign him for 1 yr. I can't see either happening. He will get a 3-4yr deal before the year is out.

Does this mean that Mike thinks that Cale could potentially be the best player in the AFL by 2014? Big wraps.

From what we saw today, we MUST NOT LET C. MORTON GO. How good can he be? He's only skinny now, but not just great skills but a good thinker too (if you heard his interview after the game). He's the sort who will learn and develop each game, and DB is just the right teacher for him.

no we don't. if he is uncontracted, he can go to GC without having to go to the draft like everyone else. otherwise, he must be traded like any other player.

thats how i read it, and after watching the past few weeks i think he is wrong.

it wont take until 2014.

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50.
