lol. well i'll start up an interesting question. If you had to choose between keeping Bennell or Cheney on our list. who would you choose? One is a quick, silky, neat, skinny half back flanker and the other one is a slowish, but extremely aggressive, well-built, tough as nails back pocketer.

I'd choose Bennell, simply because as we know, skills are so important in todays game.

There's a tidbit in today's paper which says that Bennell could have played cricket, as he was in the WA Under-18 Indigenous Team (or something like that). Shows the boy's talent I guess.

QueenC was joking to an extent but wouldn't surprise me if QC's intent is to make friends on this.

And you seem to know me so well, you're a mean spirited little snot who thinks that being nice in here is now a crime

But I did wonder if you have the brains to understand the comment and apparently not, so keep your judgmental and nasty inferences to yourself next time.......

Cheney is a workhorse. Honest, hard at the ball, basic skill level is good, will give you a contest every time and probably won't improve to become an A grader (you never know, but it seems unlikely).

Bennell has intangible qualities (on top of speed, evasive skills and good disposal) that are not only hard to find, but which are rarely seen by players this early in their career. If the choice had to be made between these two, Bennell would win hands down.

Of course the whole question is pointless though, because Bennell isn't going anywhere, and Cheney is competing with guys like Bell, Petterd, McNamara and Buckley for a spot on the list going forward.

A more realistic question is, which of the following players are best suited to play the small rebounding defender role; Bennell, Grimes, Strauss or Bail? And how would you fit all 4 into the team (assuming Strauss and Bail develop as expected)?

Bennell. But not by much. I've seen too many Walsh types.

Bennell or a slow back pocket. Didn't take long to make up my mind.

Cheney isn't slow. In fact some of the comments on here amaze me. He's gone from a likely delist at season's end 08 to a starter in the first game in round 1 09. Someone that has made such a quantum leap in one preseason has earnt my respect. I won't judge him too quickly as the curve on the graph is well and truly pointing in the right direction.

Fair call but the question was who to choose?

Both.

Do you have any harder questions ?

The question was choose 1 of the 2.

Against which club did Don Cordner play his first game?

I don't need to choose, but to satisfy your curiosity, I think that Bennell could potentially become an elite AFL player, which means I rate his potential pretty highly as we don't have one elite AFL player currently on the list.

You're fighting below your weight Hannabal.

The term 'roost it' says it all.

Well jeez that hurts, I didn't realise we were fighting.

Have you anything useful to add or is this your best shot.

Back on to Jamie Bennell again (pulls thread with), the guy just moves so cat-like... there was a subject on SEN tonight about leaving before the final siren, while i didn't bother sending a sms (i was almost home) my answer would be hell no, you can miss those little gems that often pop up in the dying stages. Imagine if you left with 10 minutes to go in the game out West... you would have missed one of the most attacking never-give-up final quarters in some time, it didn't matter that the skills weren't perfect, but there was no tempo footy.. both teams really wanted to win! These kind of situations would be perfect for guys like Jamie.. even though i'm sure he was probably exhausted, that little burst at the end can make the difference!

This kid could be something special. Great evasive skills and run. Hos little bursts along the boundary line, where he handballs out infront of himself and runs onto it... they're amazing and they'll only get better :D

I dont think he needs to put on a stack more weight. I'd say another 6-7 kgs and he'd be perfect. I think 10 would be overkill. He apparently has great core strength, especially for his size.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
