Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Also one thing i hate, Morton is so unsure of himself. He hardly ever knows what he is going to do. he changes his mind like 100 times. FIRST OPTION IS ALWAYS THE BEST OPTION CALE.

He is Nine-Friggen-Teen FFS playing a crap team with NO ONE to kick to. what do you want him to do? bomb it down to key defenders who are all over our overawed and out of position forwards?

Cale morton is the best thing out of the 2007 draft. For one palmer is a shocking user of the ball. Much Worse than cale and now he is injured anyway.

Cale grew like 2-3 cm since he has joined the club which means he has SO MUCH developing of his body to go so he still has to grow into his body let alone feel confidednt in it.

For god sakes he has playetd 24 games and is only still early 19's. He averages over 20 disposals a game which is terrific.

People expect so much so quick these days. The people on this forum need to learn 2 things. To be REALISTIC and Patient

Yes, at 19yo he's got much strength and conditioning to go.

PS. I thought Kreuzer was the best out of 2007 draft. ;)

The most disappointing thing about this thread is, with the amount of free time the palyers have, they will probably read the innane thoughts in this thread.

If you guys are blowing up because of Morton, brace yourself for when we are 4 and 18 at the end of the year and everyone is still bagging the club and our players.

Long road ahead, enjoy the development of players like Morton, that is what I'm going to do.

Top post dan,its paul, either we drop Cale now so he can learn that he must go when its his time to go or we can watch him develop into the next denial wells, a scared outside player that only remains on an AFL list because "HE HAD SO MUCH POTENTIAL"

I think if Cale continues in his current vein some HEALTHY criticism on Demonland is going to be the least of his worries. I am sure his team-mates are a greater priority. I reckon facing Brad Miller, Junior and Brock Mclean would be a far more intimidating proposition. And you can be sure his teammates will make him accountable eventually.

I want Cale to be a great player. Those people saying that he doesn't need to put his head over it because he is an outside player are dreaming. Make no mistake if this problem isn't fixed it will be terminal to his career because his team-mates and the coaching staff won't put up with it.

There are not many people who disagree with the assessment that Cale is not prone to taking his eye off the footy. Some have different ideas on how to deal with it, ie leave him in the ones and hopefully he will grow out of it or run him around in tghe twos till he can prove he can do it. One way or another I do not want Cale to be a fair weather player and play only onhis own terms, like a taller, less skilfill version of Trav. He needs to learn to play for the team.

cant wait for this boy to have the muscle to back his mind. its not fear that holds him back its knowledge. when something has to give its likely to be his body. one, maybe two more preseasons and he will be in top flight and one on the hardest players in the afl to stop. i sincerely hope he treats the time between now and his body being ready as a lesson in how opposition players play (for future reference on how he can get past them) and where and when his team mates want it. pray he doesnt get seriously crunched by selwood this weekend to prove his hardness to you.

I can't wait for this guy to be surrounded by other high quality midfielders that can reward him for his high work rate and not give him the footy when he is under enormous pressure. Our midfield is currently 4 one paced in and under players 2 of them with questionable disposal one that gets caught everytime he gets the footy and we have a goal sneak that is forced to play upfield because he is the only guy with very good speed and skills.

Morton will be good we are just expecting him to be great now, keep playing him he has a very big upside to his game not like many of our current midfield group that we are getting all they have.

That is certainly the root of many a problem we have atm.

I thinks Morton's development lies in more than just the other players though. At this point in time he simply doesn't have the body to perform the way his minds wants it to. I watched some of the clips of him for WA and he had spring in his step and his disposal was more fluent. At AFL level he looks to have the weight of the world on his sholders in the way he moves. One positive thing to me in the way he plays is that even if he takes a while to spot a player or get his kick away it is apparent that his focus is hitting a target. I am not saying that he always does but it is good to see a youngster who places emphasis on that no matter what position he is in. He just has to get stronger and quicker.

This is a very good thread. The answer in my opinion however is that he shouldn't be dropped. Cale while he may not be the hardest player on our list, he has a fantastic abilty to run all day and seems to be able to find space. Not every player has to be like a Brock McLean, Sam Mitchell or Campbell Brown.

Look at players such as Peter Matera, Nicky Winmar and even more modern era James Kelly. None of these players you associate with getting the hard ball but are all high quality players for their ability to run and cary the ball and find space. Cale Morton will be a very valuable player for the Melbourne Football Club for years to come.

James Kelly is a very good contributor for the Geelong Football Club, he links up well with the likes of Corey, Bartel, Ablett, Chapman, etc. Is he high quality though? Or is it because Geelong are so good as a team and play well together, he is easily stamped as 'high quality'. How would Kelly go in a team such as Melbourne? Would he be stamped as 'high quality' at Melbourne? Maybe. IMO he would be the equivalent of a Sylvia at Melbourne.

I agree Cale Morton will be a valuable contributor for years to come at Melbourne.

That is actually a very relevant question given that if we all remember back to the end of 2001 when Melbourne traded Grgic and pick 17 to geelong for Bizzell. Pick 17 ended up becoming Kelly. Is a interesting thought as to how Kelly would have gone at Melbourne? All speculative though I guess.

Ahh, the ol' pick 17 from 2001. Is that the pick that 3 or 4 clubs had before trade week finished? Or was that another year?

We did well in that trade, didn't we!

Apparently Dean Bailey assigned Cameron Brice to Morton as a 'skills mentor'.

Kids career was over before it started.

What a joy coming to demonland will be for the next month. To see threads actually head in the path they were supposed to instead of getting hijacked by this poor excuse for a Melbourne supporter. We need every member we can get... EXCEPT this [censored].

Your right HT that is the pick 17 that went all around the country before landing at Geelong. And yes we did very well out of that trade. Bizzell played many fine games for the Melbourne Football Club.

Cale Morton is a really good young player. He has just over a year of AFL experience and he is able to run all game and find space.

I do not think the weekends game is an fair reflection on his skill level.

He gives up the ball ocassionally. Most times he finds a team mate.

Looking at the size of his hips he will fill out very nicely and be a very strong bodied player for many years for the MFC.

I wish some on here would not be so over reactive and only choose to look at the negatives.

There are so many positives this year so far and we are still yet to see at least another five first games debut.

The whole team is playing much better than last year.

Go Cale. You are a good player and keep up the intensity

Watch the players ?? Did you? My last memory was Palmer winning the Rising star award that year...

Yes Palmer butchers his fair share of ball but you have got to be kidding if you are saying it's worse than Cales.

I don't care about the POTENTIAL upside right now? No one knows if he will be an amazing or a great player? Who knows how good a player he will

turn out to be? You can just hope. I would much rather have a ready made footballer in the draft then one who needs time to develop their body as much as Cale will need too. I understand they are very different players. But personally I think Palmer has shown much more than Cale and that is surely a better indicator of how you want a player to grow and progress? Cale may take until the end of his career to get where you all think he will get too. If he gets there at all..

Palmer has just as much upside to him as Cale. Just because Cale is yet to show this POTENTIAL consistently at an AFL level doesn't mean Palmer has run out of gas because we have seen how good he is early on. That's ridiculous. Anyway. I know I'm flogging a dead horse because we drafted Morton. I just think some supporters are blinded by their bias and narrow minded opinions.

I am as passionate as all of you. Just think with your heads not hearts.

Go Dees

come off it mate morton>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> daylight>>>>>>palmer!

palmer was always gunna be a major ball winner but ffs he has the WORST foot skills goin around! to play afl u need to have pace height the skills to be able to hit a target.. who cares if he won a rising star what does that suppose to mean? that he gunna win 10 brownlows and couple of colemans? morton creams all over palmer! infact morton was drafted as a half forward and have burst in the midfield. mortons has height pace better kicking skills and can kick snag a few goals aswell.. all palmer does is run around like a headless chook f$@#cking up his kicks.. hell no wud i want that happen on grand final down when palmer is running down the wing with watts one out in the goal square then kicks straight to an opposition, turn over, goal! we lose by one point..

Funny you say that, cos I actually agree with that comment... maybe not so harshly though.

The most worrying thing for me re: Cale has been the feeling that he's turning into a Cameron Bruce clone.

Looks like there's a reason why.

Let's all pray he doesn't.

Cale has the tools to far surpass what Bruce has achieved in AFL.

i'm sorry but palmer is definitely a better kick of the footy. He takes risks whereas Morton doesn't. thats the only difference. Making mistakes taking risks is a lot better than making mistakes not taking risks. As flattering as Mortons ability to find the ball is, it's equally as disheartening the way he uses the footy. They cancel each other out.

You don't think Cale Morton takes risks by trying to be creative with his kicking?

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
