He was great today.

Had at least 7 shots on goal, 2.4 and one out on the full.

He may have had another shot that fell short, so that would be 8 shots on goal.

He took a couple of great marks, and most importantly contested a few others that broke open a pack and we got at least one goal from (Jetta on the goal line.)

I thought he pressured well.

A good step forward for Juice today.

So it's ok for Juice to get a lot of it but be inaccurate, but when Bruce does it he needs to be dropped? Make up your mind.

I also remember him at one stage running back with the flight of the ball facing the kicker (Morton?) only to have the ball sail over his head. I suspect that he is a good judge of the ball in the air so what am I to make of his tentative and cramped backwards strides?

He was given plenty of opportunities today and he created none of them. He was weak and sometimes didn't even bother to raise both of his arms when "contesting" a mark. I remember him lying on the ground in the foetal position for long minutes around the forward flank after some negligilbe-looking contact. Perhaps he took a decent knock and was winded, it does happen. But he could have sprinted for the bench and he still would not have got off that ground quick enough for me.

Having said all that, it was probably his best performance so far. Make of that what you will.

Both of those occurred in the second quarter. The first was a contested mark and he used excellent body positioning to take what was effectively in the end a chest mark on his right hand side. Probably a 60/40 ball.

The second one simply went about a metre and a half over his head. Just a poor kick to a player 10-15 metres in the clear.

I remain to be convinced (both in consistency of workrate and skill level), but this wasn't the game to have a go at him after. Have seen games where he went to ground too easily or seemed to give up - yesterday, there were definite second and third efforts.

Do yourself a favour and get a tape of the match. His first mark [ist quarter] was heavily contested, on the chest in the end. [sure, he missed the shot for goal]His first mark in the 3rd was the result of a good lead and a sliding, low contested mark.[He kicked the goal from well out] He then missed an easy goal after a good mark with the ball coming over his shoulder, but atoned in part with a decent snap a minute later. He also during this period was totally responsible for Davey's goal which resulted from a near-mark after which he followed up, got the ball against hot opposition and handpassed to Davey. At times he marked deep in defence. It was a damned good game and as Stuey Spencer has pointed out with Newton in the side the forward line had structure--something it has lacked up until now

I really rated his game for all its worth, he does however have the problem of looking like he's loping along, but I think it is perception more than anything. I really watched him for his efforts without the ball and he put pressured on all day, it just looks like hes loping along all gangly thats all! 2 goals and a number of shots is not a bad return for a virtual first gamer

I got home and watched the replay as you do when we win. Newton was lining up for goal and his age came up on the screen - 21! (22 next week actually). I shouldn't have been surprised by his age but I was. He's still a kid finding his way and developing his body. My god we can be harsh critics at times. Let's not write him off yet. Instead praise him for a good game yesterday and hope it leads to many more.

What annoys me about any player (regardless of ability) is if they don't have a crack. Newton has been accused of this in the past but yesterday he had a crack and he had some successes. Give the guy that much credit.

This might be because Newton actually has a bag of tricks whereas Brad is more your meat and two veg, hold the gravy, type of forward. It should be interesting to see if the form holds up next week against Rutten and Bock.

He's only 21, played 17 games and everyone knows it takes KPPs longer to develop than other players.

Had he kicked a couple of sitters he could've had 4 or 5 in front of one of the worst midfields in the comp in a forward line that has been struggling to say the least.

Despite all this, there are plenty on here who are not only prepared to say he's not good enough, but that he's lazy and lacks commitment.

Myself and Clint Bizkit have been crying out for us to play with a forward structure that allows us some opportunity to kick a competitive score, and that's exactly what Miller, Newton and Bate do. None of these players will be stars, but if they provide a contest, we can at least apply some pressure on the opposition defence.

We had 52 Inside 50s and to my eyes were delivered to players better than the three weeks previous that averaged 42 Inside 50s.

The midfield stepped it up and the forward line enjoyed the better service and the plethora of opportunities.

Made important steps today but ultimately I do not see a position for him in 3 years time, which means he is taking the spot of someone who could be. Deserves a spot for the next few weeks, but more than a couple of indifferent games should see him gone.

well said! And talk of watching the replay let's mention 2 others. I thought Bartram was ordinary[whilst at the game] But watching the replay showed how important he was in the 2nd half. 8 hard-ball gets--he and Miller were equal highest--sure he coughed it up a couple of times but i'm not surprised both the MFC and The Hun rated him amongst Melbourne's best.
