Club Magazine

Just opened yesetrday's mail and had a good read of the club's annual glossy magazine. The highlight for me was an article by Marty Cox who works for the MFC and whose writing skills aren't used nearly enough by the club as far as I'm concerned. Marty used to write a lot for Demonology and his article on Colin Garland was terrific. I like the suggestion that, with the number of rising key defenders and the return of Jared Rivers, Garland might find a spot in the team's forward line and I look forward to that idea being trialled in the NAB Cup.

Martin forward for mine. Garland's run and leadership in defence was the year's lone highlight.

With Martin's size he could really throw his weight around in the forward line, leaving Miller to lead up.

A good read WJ. In fact, all of it was good. Jimmy and Craig Cameron's messages I thought were fantastic. Yes its all words and promises but it was a positive and a realistic assessment of where we are at as a club and what needs to be done. Craig Camerons's message about our connections and roots with the MCG were right on the mark, as was Jimmy's note that the relationship between the MFC and the MCC and AFL has never been better.

Preaching to the converted here Roost it. I have been calling for martin to go forward since his 2nd snr game. Copped a bit of flak about comparing him to a young D.Schwarz but time will tell! I totally agree about Col G. I believe that he could be as good as scarlett. LEAVE HIM AS THE GENERAL DOWN BACK!!!!!!!

Hammer me if you will but I think Scarlett looks better cos of the team around him. Garland is much quicker and is a chance to beat players like buddy one on one, Scarlett one out in the goal square against buddy is lacking in the initial burst of pace to keep up with him

fire at will

Fair point, but scarlett has done it year in year out even when geelong were a basket case.

Garland needs a few good years before i can rate him ahead of scarlett. But I do agree re his ability to beat his player lets hope he can keep doing it. If he has a stand out year, surely he would be a chance of all aust.

Are all members suppose to receive this glossy magazine?

I imagine so. Mine came yesterday & i'm only an MFC/MCC member.

Its quite well put together too. I like the title too - MelbourneFC The Future.

It was also good to get an acknowledgement this morning via eamil from Martin Cox, regarding suggestions sent to the "Ideas" email address.

I was a little cheesed off in the past, regarding a lack of acknowledgement from the MFC to correspondence.

Well done MC.

Cheers

And it comes with that great offer to get a subscription to The Age from Friday to Monday, as well as an advertisement for the MegaStore. $35 for one of the old alternative guernseys...

I saw that, but $35 is still too much for one of those silver monstrositys that I wouldnt even see fit to wash my car with!

A good read all around, just a pity it went to press before Tiger Ridley passed, as a fitting obituary for him would've been nice too...

I think the comparison of Garland to Scarlett is a little off the mark I think Garland Silvagni is a better one. I saw a lot of similarities in the way garland played in the last half of the season to how sos played, similar agility and closing speed. I would definitely be leaving Col in the backline, undecided on Martin though thought he showed a lot in the backline so wouldn’t be against building a solid back half around Garland and Martin.

I hope you didn't get the exact same email I did.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we finally got a response, but I also wouldn't mind a bit of personal interaction on the subject matter.

Surely it can't be... the club couldn't be that incompetent that they can't even set up an auto-reply when you send them an email.

But it is standard practice to have a template for this sort of correspondence.

If I was running that dept its exactly what i'd do, then just change it slightly to make it apt for the email you were replying to.

There's no auto-reply.

Yeah I see what you mean, but I feel for this sort of issue (where our club is trying to bring everyone closer together) there should be interpersonal reaction between the club and the supporters trying to save the club.

I've said this before, and in a few emails to the club, I don't see why we can't use qualified volunteers to respond to emails (then have them checked by an overseer or someone like that) and then sent out.

Sure are Mousey. Mine arrived in Canberra today, and if you havn't already received yours I reckon you should get it in tomorrow's post (I seem to recall that you live in the Sunshins state). Great read, the best ever of our mags IMO.

I feel no response is required from the FC. An automated response to state that your idea has been recieved, reviewed etc etc was enough for me last year re retaining members is tough times.

Are you sure you read the magazine Stigga??!!!! I read it and it was a fantastic read WJ. But Stigga, it wasn't Craig Camerons message FFS! It was Cameron Schwab. He's our CEO. You will find Schwab has addressed our connections and roots to the MCG a number of times which have been highlighted since he began in quite a few threads including "Cameron Schwab" and the "Demon Summit 2008" threads.

Can posters please get our CEO - Cameron Schwab right.

Back to the thread. Yes, very positive addresses by all concerned, also a good Christmas Sale put on by the club, smart marketing just prior to the draft and with people starting to pick up Christmas gifts before the December rush.

I think the fact that Martin chose to put his name to the email response is a good start.

I don't expect a personal dialogue with the man, but an acknowledgement at least lets me know my "idea" was received and if I have any issues in the future, I now know where to go and who to talk to.

Credit where credit is due.

Cheers

The best publication in terms of actual reading content in a long time. Good communication from the main position-holders in the club and a clear focus on youth in the other articles. The only thing that bothers me a bit is that it clearly takes a fair amount of time from writing the articles to publishing. Some of the information (eg. re injuries) is clearly out of date by the time the mag reaches our mailbox. Also would have been nice to get this after the draft with exciting bits of info about our new recruits, but from memory I think there is a pre-season edition that will cover the newbies. Good effort overall.

For a document with "The Future" on the front cover, there wasn't much mention of Casey - just passing references in Chris Connolly's and Dean Bailey's pieces.

Makes me a little nervous about the real commitment of MFC to any future in Casey if that is all it gets in a forward looking document.

Having worked in the printing business in the past, I'd say these articles were written a while ago. Possibly even when the Casey deal looked a little shaky.

The timing would've made it nigh on impossible to have an accurate account of our relationship with Casey & a fluff piece would've just [censored] off everyone looking for some cold hard facts.

I agree with you, but I can see why they didn't.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
