2008 List Changes

Come on Rhino, when you've been working towards a goal so hard for so long, and you don't fulfill your own expectations, it can be a very shattering thing.

How do you know what their expectations are and whether its shatttering or not. Spare the cliche of the dream. Both players have been battling and underperforming all year. Weetra in Sandy 2nds. Bode mainly in Sandy 1sts. If either cant work out that they were gone at year end then they are dim. I dont think they necessarily are and I dont necessarily know either way. Anything shattering should have happened months earlier when they werent make the cut for a game in the AFL. Its called reality. The delisting advice should have only confirmed what they should have already known. It was no bolt from the blue. Move on. They will.

So, just Green, Bell, CJ, Dunn, Whelan and Moloney to resign/delist/trade. Any others?

And Carroll to deal with. Maybe offer him Casey 1's or 2's next year, or a negotiated payout (less than his contract). He could announce a dignified retirement then.

The only thing "shattering" is that they were crap players. There's company in numbers though.

ok so who else can we see going this year? 6 gone, and given that valenti and aussie are good odds to be elevated to the senior list means we only have 4 picks atm.

i can only assume that we will wont more than that. at least 4 in the national draft (1, 17, 19, 35 are all reasonable picks). we would want PSD pick 1, and there is a possibility that we will trade in a player ie robbie warnock. that means we need at least 2 more spots. can we leave say valenti on the rookie list until after the draft to see what comes up?

......................

The straithtforward decisions that many in this place have been predicting for months are now part of our history. Most of the 'tough' decisions that have recently been foreshadowed by Bails have probably also been made, but I doubt that we will become aware of them until trade week.

I disagree, i would love to see chopper stay in the squad and get back to some of his good form.

Not crap - just not up to the standard of AFL

That's my definition of an AFL player that's not up to AFL standard.

Can't Rate A Player

The delistings are fair enough Weetra is no shock but Bode can think that he was a little bit stiff considering duds like Carroll and Meeson are still on the list. His form at Sandy wasn't too bad I thought they may give him 1 more year but I suppose that is what happens when you give duds ridiculous contracts.

There is no doubt that delisting a player will always upset some supporters but the harsh reality that developing depth within a football club is extremely important to the long term success of the club

Just look at AFLTABLES and no matter what club you choose to look at you will see an amazing ammount of players who play 10 games or less for their entire career

Nobody should begrudge their chance to play at the highest level but its important for football clubs to constantly adjust their lists to rid themselves of the players who just wont make the grade

Contracts that dont work suffocate the advancement of your list with the current salary cap rules and regulations

no way i would give a 27 year old anymore that a 1 year performance based contract

It might take 1 - 2 more years to start breathing again but i am confident the lessons of the past have been well and truly learnt

Bode is not AFL standard. Unfortunately Carroll (ATM) and Meesen are contracted.

Even if we did not have Carroll and Meesen, Bode was not competing against them and should be dispensed. Why would we keep another sub par player?

Swamp, its not the depth that is extremely important. Its the development of your best 22. MFC has lots of depth. Bar the bottom six on the list its all around the similar standard. Generally not competitive.

I am completely puzzled after a train wreck season, why supporters who you would think would want success think that clearly NQR players should somehow be kept on for another year. Unbelievable.

Important for the club. He's one of only a few on-field leaders we have.

Its spelt Whelan by the way.

When did this forum turn into a spelling bee? Who gives a toss?! FWIW Carro needs to see out his contract at Casey Fields, his skills are poor but his effort in the reserves could help develop youngsters.

Welcome to the world of the under 26 year team.

No decent 27 or older player, other than one who is on the fringe or looking seriously at retirement would agree to that. I reckon you would also have to ban supporters saying "he bleeds red and blue" or "plays for the guernsey" if that was the club's rule.

Correct.

Or it might be case of having a sign in the Club saying "This way to the PSD".

I think MFC has faulted in giving certain players 3 year contracts when they were clearly on the decline. We have also extended th service of NQR players as depth rather than refresh the list to get better players into the team.

But dont go the blanket rule on contract by age. At 27, some players are coming into their peak. Sharper judgement needs to used by the Club with senior players coming up to contract review.

Footy is a business these days emotions shouldn't come into decisions. The facts are we besides Rivers, Davey and Green we don't have any high quality players in the age bracket of 23-28 yo. Prior to the end of last season we kept to many good VFL players on our list, we had a lot of players on our list for long periods that were very average AFL players but stood out when they went back to Sandy so we kept them around.

We have six players delisted/retired so far, Aussie need promotion, 5 spots left, you promote Valenti and get a player in the Trade or PSD you may be down to 3 spots, not enough. Two more players will go whether delist or trade. IMO we will add 1-2 players through PSD/Trade and 4-5 in the National draft.

Carroll will be lucky if they keep him around, a pay out is not a bad option and hopefully he is on a low base with game bonuses.

Excatly. WE need best 22 players. I prefer best 22 and no depth then having 44 depth players. For far to long our list had kept players for depth and didn't turn it over and only had around 3 changes every year. I hate the word Depth player that much now that I'm willing to cut anyone who's described as that.

I'm happy with the turnover and clean house approach.

Let's concentrate on best 22 and then worry about that depth player.

Interesting point made about Geelong yesterday.

Their best 6-7 is that good that it lifts the level required of the rest of the players in the team. A good team would then press this forward into the rest of the players in the squad.

Creating a "best 22" who have fought their way to play for the Red and Blue must contain high quality players, "superstars" if you will.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
