I don't understand why the AFL feels a need to be there. If the two clubs can't get a deal done, doesn't that just mean the deal doesn't get done? It should be the clubs' problems for not dealing.

Fremantle is bluffing, if they say they will re-draft him. They shouldn't risk it. He doesn't want to be there, they'll have a player on their list who has publicly stated he wishes he was playing for another club.

The AFL's excuse (according to the article Demon Head posted) is that they are sick of deals not being done until the last few hours. So what? Again, isn't that the clubs' problems? If a club can't get a player it wants, it shouldn't receive help from the AFL.

I am not really into the speculative stuff but I feel that this could fall our way. Could it be that we are waiting till the last minute to offer 19 for him. It seems that way to me.

The question is can we afford him or pay him. If we sweeten (ahem) the pick with one Nathan Carroll that could work. I am willing to pay warnock what we would have paid carroll. Especially seeing that Freo say they have enough room in thier cap for warnock.

Of course being contracted Carroll needs to agree to it. He might, it would be his last chance to play senior footy?

I think that could be fair . Pick 19 and carrol to Fremantle. I don't know what is wrong with Carrol but a few years ago he was a very very good defender, probably our best. Maybe a change of scenery is what he needs and we need a ruckman there is no doubt about that and recruting one in the draft is good but we need someone who is ready to go straight away, because ruckmen take years to develop so we need Warnock.

Or dare I say it ... actually I can;t believe im saying it .. Mark Seaby. Not as bad as some think, regardless of what people say he is a premiership ruckman.

Everyone in our backline looked bad this year because our forwards and midfield put no pressure whatsoever on opposing teams, and when they did look what happened, we didnt get smashed. Our backline can cope it's just we need sustained pressure.

So Carrol could be good somewhere else.

A very interesting point there Redleg. Surely the two clubs are big enough to sort it out themselves. The situation may have come to boiling point. Harvey & Ratts must have renewed their rivalry, neither wanting to give an inch. It's beautiful.

You need to do more research, Carroll is a renowned social problem amongst other Clubs with a history from his time back West of social issues often revolving around alcohol.

I find it ridiculous that the AFL sees fit to intervene in these processes, but Fremantle has every right to demand pick 6 on the following basis - how can Carlton value Warnock as good enough to warrant a $400,000 contract and yet only be offering a second round pick. If you assume Judd is on $1,200,000 a year - I dont know if he is but its possible - then logically it follows that the trade bounty WCE received for Judd, the Dockers should get a third of that which at least equals a highish first round pick. Carlton cant have it both ways, indicating he is a platyer of great value by dint of the what they will pay him, but then offer pick 24 in exhange.

Are they trying to look after Fremantles interests (something which the Dockers are a little suspect on) by making sure Warnock doesn't fall to the PSD? I don't know, but at the end of the day the clubs will work it out, it is their right and responsibility, and if they don't then the player has other options at his disposal. If this is the process in place then it shouldn't be messed with, because it seemingly will push the AFLPA further towards advocating a free agency system.

People need to realise that there are many complexities involved in many of the trades, hence very few trades get finalised in the first 3-4 days.

It's easy for a small fry like Adam Thomson to be traded as his contract would be fairly straight forward. On the other hand, for a club to obtain O'Keefe, they'd be looking to trade other players to free up salary cap room and provide draft picks to meet Sydney's demands. And the players put up for trade need to agree to be traded, find a suitable home, and come to a contractual agreement with their new club.

People may get frustrated, but the trade period can't be condensed into 1-2 days.

Free agency can work if players couldn't walk into the draft without the club receiving compensation. There would have to be an independent arbiter to assess the value of the player, and what compensation the club receives.

Also, the salary cap would need to be changed so that it was a flat $amount, which includes marketing components. At the moment, some clubs are paying close to $1.5m more than others in TPP.

If they can get him unstable, those involved with their list management must be congratulated. Don't forget they have come from the bottom in a relatively short time frame to a premiership. They should have room with their young list IMO. Although O'Keefe may have to come down a little from the reported $600K figure he placed on his head.
