Jumper Numbers

As of next year, we will (likely) have the following numbers available....

4, 9, 13, 28, 34, 38

I feel Neitz's number needs to be retired for at least a year or so.

I like what happened last year, with the new guys coming in and taking the available numbers in order (Morton 10, Grimes 16, Maric 19 etc)

But do you think any of the higher numbered boys who stood up this year might like a change? Valenti and Aussie both have high numbers that reflect their rookie status. Perhaps Valenti to 13? Aussie might like to hold on to his, make the 39 his own, become synonymous with the number. A developing ruckman (*cough* Warnock *cough*) in 34, same as how 11 gets passed on?

Thoughts / comments?

I'm not a fan of players changing their numbers, so I hope Aussie and Valenti keep theirs. I'd also retire Neita's for a while, and give the new guys jumpers in the order that they come to the club.

Fair enough but why did nieta not change to 3 then.

Or 2? or 31? I think the captains need to make the numbers their own. If Jack Watt's wants to be captain, let him make No. 4 his own. And I personally have a feeling that a future captain has 16 on his back right now.....

Because we can say 2, 3, 9, 31 and straight away you know who is being talked about....

Out there, I know.

Seriously, what's the point of guessing next year's numbers when we don't even know who's going to be on the list yet?

(And yes, I did actually go to the effort of typing all that out. Clearly I need a life.)

Well it wasn't about guessing who could be on the list, it was just about should numbers change, should we retire #9 etc

New player at 17? Something you know we don't?

And yeah, I ran the numbers off in order too, but in my head, didn't have to worry about typing it :)

The C.Johson/New Player means it'll either by CJ or a new player. Same applies to Zomer, Spencer and Valenti. Where they're already gone or near certain to be gone, I didn't bother to list their name as they (almost) definitely won't be occupying that number next year.

9 should be the number we give to our future captains

Why?! What and go down Richmond's path, no thanks...

Fair enough but why did nieta not change to 3 then.

Exactly, Captains should forge their own numbers pretty much with what they started with at a club.

I hate that, personally. Let the players forge their own history with their own number. If it were me, I'd want to keep the same number I got, whether it were 1 or 46.

Supporters should get over the pretence of a player's number.

Both Hird and Buckley passed on their numbers respectively at Essendon and Collingwood immediately.

Get Neitz to present to our first draft pick pre 2009.

Its just a bloody number lets just pass it on immediately to a player the Club believes is deserving next season.

Considering how hard he fought to get it, doubtful....

Did anyone else know that they offered #10 to Jace Bode, but he chose to keep #43 because of playing with Riggers at Sandy? Just an interesting side note....

Posted
I reckon Bartram should give #3 to Watts.

Why?

And I'm with Rhino, let them stick with what they have and "important" numbers still get passed along.

With regards to 38, at sandy yesterday i heard that danny hughes (a rookie from last year) will be given a permission to train for the preseason. He had this year off with hip/groin surgery.

Exactly. I read early on in the year that Jake King was given the opportunity to change to a lower number (he's 46). He was going to until he found out a sick young kid had just bought a jumper and put 46 on the back, so he decided to keep it for life. Aussie should stay at 39 so that kids can put 39 on their back like they used to do with Aaron Davey.

Watts will be number 4.

I had a dream we were playing Richmond and Watts snapped the ball for our first goal, he was wearing number 4.

Wow i need to get a life

Having dreams like that means you've got a life!!

Apparently Jack Watts wore number #4 for Vic Metro? Perhaps he could be given that number?

Either way...IF Jack Watts does nominate for the National Draft and IF we do pick him in the draft with our first pick he will probably get either number #9 or number #4....or may be even number 13# (Allen Jakovich style! ;) )

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
