Freo will pay $1m to keep Warnock

Just be assh*les and take him in the PSD for nothing... 1 Mil for 3 years isn't that much especially with the salary cap raising to about 8 mil.. it is only an average wage

I'll cop $333,333 a year for Robbie Warnock if that doesn't mean involving picks. What is the average wage? $250,000?.

Don't forget if he came to us there is no doubt he would be the number one ruckman.

I think a trade for someone like Michael Newton might be thing. Both players have had their injury problems this year and would be looking for new environments to reinvigorate their respective careers.

I can't see the club wanting Newton to leave. You only have to look at the selected side this week to see why. Despite his apparent shortcomings at this stage in time we really don't have any KPP's. He is still young. I'd like to see him have an awesome pre-season and a shot next year.

"Ruck tyro Robert Warnock is likely to command a new contract worth almost $1 million over three years if he elects to stay at Fremantle." from the West Australian Freo will pay $1m to keep Warnock

$1 million over 3 years? What has he done to earn that sort of coin. Nothing. If it were $1 million over 4 years, that would be at the very least...be believable.

if we are sure he will take over as our number 1 ruckman next year, then i am happy to pay him that much. he has done his maturing at freo and is ready to step up and be a number 1 ruckman. if he is going to play for 10 years it is worth paying that much to ensure we get him. i am more worried about what we give up to get him. i want number 1 in the PSD so that we can either take him for free or trade rubbish for him. that PSD is worth more than the priority pick. its probably worth more than the differece between picks 1 and 3 in the national draft too. if there are two good players available for PSD we can trade for one (read blackmail) and pick up the other.

getting warnock from freo just as he is ready to step into a number 1 ruck role sounds like something we did 10 years ago...

To me about $750,000 for 3 years is fair enough. That is $250,000 a season. That's pretty good for a 21 year old ruckman. That's a fair slice of the salary cap too.

what is the salary cap $8 mil? 44 players on the list? 6 of them on about $50K as draftees each years, a couple of rookies on less...

so average is going to be a litle over 200K...

BUT if paying a little extra means we plug a gap on our list for 10 years, then is it worth it? any home grown ruckman is 3-4 years behind warnock and still not a guarantee...

and considering we are currently paying under the cap and will be losing a number of players on the upper side of things, mixed in with the fact that we have to pay a minimum, well someone has to get the money. we may as well use it to poach a couple of players...

if we could manage to trade for a young midfielder with good disposal who would be a starting 18 player for us (without using our first pick, or preferably our first 2 picks) then we could be in serious business in 2010..

Exactly Deanox, even to pay the minimum, what is it 95%, of the cap, we're going to be overpaying blokes for the next year or two. Load up his contract early to get him here. He's young and ready to go and drafting ruckmen isn't a presice science. We need to be aiming squarely at 2012 onwards as serious premiership opportunities and he'll be right in his prime.

The issue is that when players improve and time comes to renegotiate, they deserve a payrise.

There are upsides and downsides to having a young list. In a few years time we will have a lot of players playing at thier peak and we will need room in the salary cap to accomodate for thier improvement. Of course this would be a good problem to have.

I also believe that with the culture that DB is developing we wont want to be paying players more than thier worth. This could have a detrimental affect on morale.

These are good points you make. I'm not exactly familiar with the $ market and the going rates for a 21 yo, thats all. But making a "guestimate", I would of thought if he were to get $1 million for 3 years he would be getting 'overs'. But if thats what it takes to get him, so be it.

Thats OK but what do you tell the rest of the side. Would he be earning more than PJ who has paid his dues and outputs more than Warnock at this point?

Pj would have something to say about that - we'd hope!

Thats correct, just as long as we don't go too overboard in paying, I would of thought that by going young, we'd be well under the cap, then as we add quality to the list and the contracts start coming up for renewal, it then becomes a juggling act.

Of course its always a juggling act as the list turns over and over back ended contracts would make things difficult.

things are always going to be back and forth. obviously players will try and get more than they are worth, they have the right to negotiate as do anyone. but just because we pay him slightly over now, doesnt mean we pay him over forever. he does not automatically get a pay rise when his contract comes up. if no one wants to pay him more he isnt worth more. his market value in 4 years is not related to how much he is payed next year.

that being said, i dont want to pay him heaps and treat him like a god. but we may as well use some of our free money to attract a couple of players to the club.

So if he signs the reported figure, will fix him on that for the next contract too (with a get out clause if performance is below par)

So in light of the news re player payments to go from ~100% to 92.5%, how does 333k/year sound now ?

Losing Yze, Neitz, Holland and possibly White Would have to alleviate that a fair amount, wouldn't it? I can't imagine the remaining young blokes would be commanding that much, and the article read like treatment for player injuries was eating into that percentage (not sure how that works) which hopefully is a temporary inflation (who knows with Moloney and Rivers luck with injury?).

We could always forward load a portion of the salary offered to Warnock anyways. I don't think it's going to effect any offer made to Warnock. We had the finances to make a play for Judd last pre-season. It's going to boil down to where Warnock wants to play, and hopefully Matthew puts the hard word on (or keeps putting it on).

That's debatable Rogue, you think Jamar is the Number 1 ruckman now? Is that based on last weeks game or on Hit Outs?

It isn't either when you see who is the first choice in the centre week in week out since White got dropped. For good measure despite the brain fades Jamar was excellent quelling Hille's influence. Together with Watson, Hille has been critical to Essendon's recent success.

PJ and Jamar have their limitations but PJ aint No 1 ruckman and if he was good enough to be it.

If we get Warnock, PJ might make it as a mobile 2nd strong big man that allows a coach to rotate 4 midfields regularly off the bench.

I don't think where have a true no.1 ruck anymore, noen of White, Jamat nor PJ fit the description.

It's based on which player has spent more time rucking since White was left out of the side.

IMO Jamar currently has the "#1 ruck" mantle by default.

Indeed.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w
