IMO Buckley reminds me alot in the pace of one or both of the Burgoynes running off half back and breaking lines with penetrating kicks.................I'm not sure CJ offers that?

CJ's defensive work is far better than Buckley's. I see Buckley as a centre line player where his pace can be best utilised. I like Wheatley as a winger who can share the kick in duties with CJ.

I agree.

I've mentioned it before, but Buckley's defensive efforts etc. weren't great in his initial games this year.

However, it was something that was worked on at Sandy, and he seems to be working harder since he's returned to the Dees team.

There'll be no such thing as a back 6 next year,depends on who we're playing.Earlier this year Cameron the Bruce played on Brad Johnson and on the weekend Belly played on him so it'll be more like a rotating back 10 plus there'll always be Rivers or Whelan injured,Bell or Frawley dropped.

Depth is the name of the game these days.

Who'd have thought at the start of the year 59 out of 64 dees fans would have Garlan def in their 09 season backline?

I do like what Stef has shown, but i also feel he's been Garland, Rivers and Warnock.

Beginning to worry about where Frawley fits in.

Bell, Bruce and Buckley i see more as midfielders, and if Bell can't fit in there he might be in trouble.

Id say Martin fullback on the monsters

Garland as CHB for the more mobile forward

Rivers 3rd man up loose

Bell for medium sized forward

Bartram for the small forward

Johnson as the rebounder.

Id also put Brad Green or Ricky Petterd in place of CJ as the rebounder.

Or Green in Rivers position as loose man around CHB (which lets face it he has been this year due to Rivers constant injuries)

Think Warnock has been OK this year, but not sure if he will hold his spot for the future with other more talented players coming through.

Whelan to interchange with Bartrams role on small forwards depending on match ups.

I still think Bell has a place in the backline as he is usually pretty tight defensively on his opponent. Has just been poor rebounding this year.

I think Garland can be tried as a leading forward. He could be used as a swing man similiar to Adam Hunter from the Eagles. However, can be named in the back pocket. Replacing most likely a Bell or Martin. One of these players will be used off the interchange.

Martin, Rivers and Garland to play a role against the bigger forwards, Whelan to lock down on the most dangerous small forward and Wheatley and Pettered take the in-between sized forwards an provide most of our run and carry from defence. For this scenario to work, Martin clearly has to continue to develop to enable him to tackle the dwindling but still important number of power forwards in the comp. Garland can take the fast leading, bigger bodied forwards and Whelan, Petterd and Rivers all have to successfully complete pre-seasons and prove that their bodies are capable of enduring the rigours of a full AFL season. If they can, we seem to have a good balance of bigs, mediums and smalls, all pretty composed with the ball in hand and generally speaking make good decisions and deliver the ball well. Our inexperienced defenders in this back 6 (Petterd, Martin and Garland) are also complemented by the more seasoned trio of Whelan, Wheatley and Rivers. Warnock, Frawley, Bell and a pinch-hitting Bruce or Green are starting to give us both depth and versatility down back.

i must confess i have to eat humble pie.

I personally did not rate Chris Johnson simply because i thought he was soft as melted butter and disposal was poor.

I think now that Sandringham has helped him immensely and I think he is best suited to utilise his new found confidence running off half back and creating with his lovely left foot passes.

ah yes i completely forgot about Wheatley. Now he is a player we need to get the ball into the hands of. Someone who can kick 60 metres is a plus for any team, Not only that he is actually quite an accurate kick. I would be tempted to leave him at half back and swap with CJ.
