Sean Wellman,our backline coach...

The Dees are ranked:

16th for kick in efficiency

16th for kick in clangers

16th immediate turnovers

16th for direct goals scored against our kickins

There is absolutely no plan and we take so long to bring the ball back in that everyone is manned up and little or no options. We need to bring the ball back in asap like the Bulldogs do,not wait 20 seconds then the ump calls play on.

Has Wellman been working on our kick in strategy in pre season???

What's Wellman been doing since pre season??????

To be fair I would say NONE of that is to do with Wellman. Without being 100% sure I would have thought it was the Senior Coach's responsibility to decide the kick-in strategy. You can hardly blame a coach for some of the absolutely pants kicks that our kicker-inners (for lack of a better term) have produced either (see Bell to Leon Davis on Monday).

Because our backline is ranked 16th

Yeah, if only our backline was ranked first to match our world-beating midfield and brilliantly versatile (read: empty) forwardline

I actually think our defence has been the most improved area this season. Finally it's not so much about Carroll punching people, and Rivers trying to kill himself to cover contests, and more about calm heads, pace and super-accountable defending.

How is our foward line going?

When your backline concedes 127 points a game (20 goals),doesn't matter how good your forward line is,you ain't gonna win many games!!!

Bulldogs are the highest scoring team this year and they average 123 points a game!!!!!!

Which means even if we had the Bulldogs forward line this year,we'd still be losing because our backline concedes more than the best forward line scores this year.

Garland & Warnock are developing very well this year but to say they wouldn't be developing as well under another backline coach is not crediting their own natural development.

Sean Wellman sucks. He is a terrible backline coach.

We now have 2 legit key backs in Garland and Warnock, who are young and awesome and will be cornerstones of our defence for years to come.

But Sean, why did it take you a whole 2 months to find them? You suck!!!!!!!!!!!

Should have been sacked in Round 5!!!!

Shouldn't that be Ranked #1 for kick in clangers, and direct goals from kick ins?

I'm more interested in our midfield. I'd also like to see a comparison of other teams' backlines performance compared to their midfield performance. Good midfields make your defence look very good. Bad midfields make your defence look very bad.

FWIW I think our defence have held up pretty well this year under the circumstances.

Our backline is doing fine considering the pressure they got bombarded with in the first 5 or so rounds. I think they are standing up well and improving every week. The clangers have a lot to do with not having anything to kick upfield too.

That's basically the same stat regurgitated 3 times re the kick ins. Hardly earth shattering stuff. We do need to sort it out. We need to give Wellman the same grace as Bailey and the rest of the coaching staff.

16th ranked forwardline, 16th ranked forwardline, and i'm absolutely with Nasher on this.

A good quality midfield that pressues the opposition midfield not only lowers the number of entries into our defensive 50, but lowers the quality at which it comes in. This was seen starkly in the midfield performance deteriorating the quality of Hawthorn's forward entries, whilst against the Saints, our backline did not stand a chance.

The way to judge our backline is to rate how the players are going. Garland is basically unrecognisable, as is Warnock, Frawley i think is still finding his place, Bell is struggling a bit but i think it's largely a form issue. Rivers has been injured and so our backline/team's most important players has not been able to help the structure.

Our team is being groomed for a new future, with a new structure and stye of play, and thus no individual part should be rated aside from any other.

I remember at least two times when we took quick kick-ins against the filth and the maggots told us to take them again for some unknown reason; perhaps they were just unnerved as they had never seen us do it before.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
