Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

10 untouchables

With Morton re-signing for 2 years that protects him from being snapped up by GC as an uncontracted player but presumably leaves the WS door open.

Which 10 players are untouchables (including Morton if he's in your list) and must be protected from GC and WS poaching.

I think there's a strong case for signing this year's pick 1 & 2 to 3 years to lock them in - so you can leave them out of the list (or consider it to be 12).

[PS. It should be said that I think we can protect more than 10 with good negotiation but 10 is a nice number to sharpen your thinking - see Pants good work below, it's not easy]

Not necessarily in order:

1. Watts

2. Grimes

3. Morton

4. Davey

5. Frawley

6. Garland

7. Blease

8. Bennell

9. Jurrah

10. Jones

Jones likely won't be in many people's lists, but I'd hate to lose him for diddly. That leaves the likes of Strauss, Warnock, Moloney, Maric, McLean, Rivers and Martin and Sylvia exposed. I could probably swap the names Jones and Bennell with the likes of Sylvia, McLean and Strauss, but I'll leave it at that for now. I should add that for me, Watts, Grimes, Morton, Frawley and Garland are the only certainties to be on that list.

I thought it said "Do feed the lions"!

You can ignore the instructions in the OP as you wish - hey it's an internet forum after all.

But you don't need to include "Scully" and "Trengove" in your top 10, it's a current top 10 - top 12 if you include this year's pick 1 and 2.

It's hard because i'm not really sure of the current contract situation of most of the players. Also don't GC only have a 'capacity' to sign 1 uncontracted player from each club? Does that mean they can just pick any un-contracted player they like (as in the draft system)? or do they have to negotiate with the player?

If they can recruit any 'one' un-contracted player they like from us then i'd want to contract these guys (aside from Morton who's already signed on again...)

1. Watts

2. Grimes

3. Frawley

4. Blease

5. Strauss

6. Sylvia

7. Jurrah

8. Bennell

9. Bate

10. Garland

I've left out the likes of Davey, Green, McLean, etc.. because its imperative we keep our best players under the age of 23 together imo. (would like to put Maric in there too...)

I should add that I have Davey so high because I believe he is the glue that binds the brother hood together and if we can keep him a Demon for his career it will go a long way to securing the services of Jurrah, Bennell, Aussie, etc.

Yeah, that's a really good point I didn't consider. Couldn't imagine the Flash would want to defect to the GC though...He's Melbourne through & through!!

Watts

Grimes

Garland

Frawley

Morton

Can only find 5 at the moment that cover both the WS and GC introduction. If we are just talking GC, then add Jurrah, Blease, Stauss, Bennell and Wona - mostly because it's too hard to judge how much upside there will be (as opposed to could be in a perfect world) at the moment.

Does it have to be 10?

Don't you just end up including borderline players in that case?

List however many you want up to 10 then, like Kit did

Remember that means you're prepared to let others go to GC or WS - I'd be amazed if you don't want to protect at least 10.

BTW, the AFL has some secret draft compensation formula for clubs losing uncontracted to GC and WS so we don't lose the player for nothing.

I only read the thread title and assumed it was players we'd never consider even trading.

That'll teach me to not fully read the OP.

And yeah, i know i could list fewer, but I was trying to point out that most people would list 10 for the sake of making up that number...

I'm surprised no one mentions Ricky Petterd! Maybe not top 10 but the way he's been playing and improving in recent weeks makes me think that if traded to or captured by GC he could end up biting us in the bum.

I want to keep him, could well turn out to be an excellent player.

They can have Brad Miller if they want.. But hands off our Rick you bums  .

The kid is starting to put together some quality performances. I like him as a small forward. I know a number of people like him as a HB, but he takes a really good contested mark, and just seems more dangerous across half-forward. Also, his kicking is markedly better in the forward half then it is in the back half at this stage, and....he loves a goal too.

Is there a good reason why no-one has mentioned Petterd until the last couple of posts?

In no particular order: Watts, Morton, Frawley, Garland, Bate, Davey, Grimes, Jurrah, Petterd, McLean.

These are 10 that I think for various reasons wouldn't get enough in return from the AFL. If we lost McLean, for example, we'd probably only get a 2nd round pick. Likewise any of the kids might only net a 2nd ro 3rd rounder and I believe have a lot more improvement yet to come. Davey is a playere who is worth more to us than anything but perhaps a top 3 pick, which the AFL wouldn't grant us.

There are others like Sylvia, who has issues with his body. Gievn how he's played this year I feel like the AFL would compensate us heavily, and it may actually work to our benefit is some ways. That's not to say I want him out...

LOL at the inclusion of Scully and Trengove on some lists. We don't even have them yet!

My 10 untouchables, loosely in order:

1. Watts

2. Grimes

3. Jurrah

4. Morton

5. Garland

6. Frawley

7. Sylvia

8. Davey

9. Moloney

10. Wonaeamirri

Petterd*, Strauss, Blease, Bennell, Jetta, Maric, Cheney are next --> Based on potential alone, the asking price we as a club would set for these players is far above what they're worth in actual market value, based solely on results. Blease and Strauss haven't even played yet, and the rest, bar Petterd, are too early in their careers to make a definitive call on their value. (To be honest, i'm loathed to trade anybody under the age of 21.)

Minus Sylvia, Davey, Moloney and Frawley, the rest of the list are all recently drafted players. As part of our rebuild, it's crucial we hold onto all of this group so they can grow and develop together, ala Geelong and St Kilda's lists. I added the aforementioned senior players, as i believe they'll make up the core of our leadership group for the next 5 years, until Grimes and Watts are ready for that next step up.

'torpedo' made an excellent point about Davey - having him there as the leader of our indigenous kids is vitally important in keeping Wona, Jurrah, Bennell and Jetta all together, each of whom have shown at least glimpses of being excellent players in the future.

* - Pettred is an interesting one. Keep Petterd unless GC offer something we just can't refuse for him (i.e. top 10-15 draft pick). That's probably the main reason i have him just outside my top 10 untouchables. While i believe he's going to be a very good player, he's also likely to command a very good player/draft pick from GC in the upcoming compromised drafts.

11 people do lists and no-names Warnock? WTF........I will pull the old chestnut that no-one is untouchable but within reason list as follows.

1. Grimes

2. Morton

3. Sylvia

4. Frawley

5. Jurrah

6. Warnock

7. Garland

8. Davey

9. Watts

10. TBC (I am assuming one of Strauss or Blease will fill this spot once we see them play in the Red and Blue)

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. OOZEE by The Oracle

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
