Cherry Ripe I would have thought. Reading Beach Road Bazza's brief match report on the Sandy games this weekend, it sounds as though all the Melbourne blokes had good games for the Zebs. Admittedly easy to do when your mob wins by 117 points, but they have been going well for a few weeks now, so they must be ready to return to the front line. Rivers and Bartram in particular will be great inclusions.

It's True, Grimes, has a stress groinshinback fracture. Might never walk again. rare but serious

Playing at sandy they can re-injure themselves, why not play them for the dees where they are meant to play and needed desperately

They can be eased back at Sandy. Firstly the intensity is lower, and secondly they can be made to only play a half (particularly if they play in the reserves) in a bid to increase their fitness. If they've been out for X months, they're going to get slaughtered if they're brought straight back in to the team, and how their body would hold up is generally an unknown when they have been out for a long time. You don't know how much game time they're capable of, and at AFL level you need them to be capable of at least 70% if needs be. No coach is going to take that risk.

If any of Bartram, Rivers and Whelan aren't selected this week, it will not be due to fitness. They seem to have demonstrated they're capable of running out a game at Sandy.

basically if you are not sure how the bodies will respond, you cannot risk them at afl level. sandy is important yes, but if rivers came off the ground and said 'hey im a little tight through here not sure if i should keep going' if he was at sandy he could sit the rest of the day out. at afl level however he would probably be required to continue playing somewhat.
