Sadly, the way the system works, it is best to come last if you can't come first.

I rather finish last (not that this is any sort of guarantee that we'll get the first pick) than come 9th, but it is far too early to be thinking about this sort of thing. If we are good enough to win 9-10 games this year than there are probably more deserving teams out there who could use a number one pick (except Carlton, they can rot in hell :angry: ). However if it cames to the last few rounds and we were battling for bottom spot, I would prefer for us to 'manage our list' wisely and not try too hard to win.

In round 3 however, the focus is firmly on finals, even if we are 0-3 at the moment.

Forget Natanui. Carlton and Richmond are rancid effluent and will be lucky to win 5 games between them. I'd rather see us play well in our 150th year than hope for a wooden spoon and a kid that we have very little chance of acquiring.

A top 3 pick should produce a very good player this coming draft. Rich, Hurley for example.

This is a season that DB can afford to be poor. It is his first year and a couple of good picks at the end of this year should hopefully set us up going forward. Given this and a few games under young players belts this year and we sgould be on the road to a better 2009.

CC said if this season was dead after round 6 then they would assess the list going forward and platy young players.

We do not have any guns but Morton could be one. Lets hope we can pick up another one or two like him.

Yeah a top 3 pick seems a certainty. Either of those will help. Will be handy if we can get trade another player this year for a pick in the top 20, tho on current form there wouldnt be any worth it.

Fwiw, I had a look at teach team's 'best 22' AFL rucks a couple of seasons back, and not many were high draft picks - in fact, plenty came from the rookie list.

Some many factors to consider, firstly, good chance Carlton and Richmond wont win 5 games this year so if that happens pick 1 and 2 to them, we may finish last but that mean pick 3 and 20 because if we finish last we will win less than 5 matches. However we have 19 rounds to go and a lot can change we could get on a streak.

IMO though forget the ruckman get KPP we have not one key forward coming through, Newton is more of a flank FP than a key forward.

What a pathetic thread and what a bunch of losers you guys are.

It's three rounds into the season and, yes, we've been ordinary for most of them but we have played the big three and the players are adapting to a new coach and a new ball game. We're starting to show improvement and if we can get the right combination going and the players click together this week, you never know what could happen.

I'm not suggesting a flag but it's dangerous these days to rely on early draft picks alone to develop your club.

Oh..please I agree.. certainly drawing a short straw isnt it !!

but then again is it a lot differnt for the many ( not the elite that would walk in to a game early in first season) playing in say the VFL down here..or SANFL etc... I acknowledge not quite on par.. but its similar effect.

I do agree 100% that its the 3 years that would be somewhat heartbreaking for an aspiring player

In the little paper Vlad was quoted as saying that the new franchises may even get priority access to the top 15 - 16 year old talent.

Interesting idea...if that means they don't get priority on the 17-18 year old's it would partially solve the problem of the bottom clubs getting screwed over during the next two drafts and means that fewer talented 17-18 year olds would be left cooling their heels unecessarily for a 2-3 year gap.

Good luck to the poor bugger who has to identify the best talent in the land when their 15-16 I guess not too many KPP punts would get made

I certainly hope Vlad the Demitrifool has taken more care with the treatment of this area ( 17th and 18th teams ) than he did with even the notion of entering the GC without first firming up a ground..or the legalities surounding it !! lol

I played heaps of footy at a very high level, all you need from your ruckman is to make a contest, your ruckman can win as many taps that he wants but if your midfield can't read the tap and the opposition does they will win the footy. Give me a KPP over a ruckman anyday, ruckman aren't match winners give me a good CHF or FF over a ruckman anyday. Name one first round pick ruckman that is a superstar.

I'm on tyhe same page as you 'doc', but my take is that both positions are important.

However we are adequately competative ATM in the ruck division, but struggling in the key posts front & back.

Give me either a gun Key posi' player or a gun Quick mid clearance player as our first pick & then I'll shut up. Then I'd like more hard assed mongrel players thanks, 'Doc'.
