Melbourne has replaced Craig Cameron as recruiting manager with Barry Prendergast - Clubs on the hunt for brains.

Just read an old article that mentions that he was a recruiter at the Kangaroos before crossing over in late '05 - Refreshed my memory..... Off-season moves to the demons

Does anyone know what capacity he was involved in the Kangaroos recruiting?

Wasn't Barry Prendergast involved with the Demons earlier days as well... Anyone?

Good news! i am happy with this decisin by the club to chose somebody from their own ranks...just a little note to people, now that BP s going to become a bigge part of discussion on these boards...lets not get BP confused with BB

The common concensus on CAC was that there was no concensus, but IMO he's got some big shoes to fill.

Good luck Barry. You will have to not only extract the stars but run the gauntlet of the ruthless judges of recruiters on the site.

He had a say in getting Dale Morris to the Bulldogs, perhaps when he was coach of weribee??....That's a feather in the cap

i think he will do a good job.

worked with him in his final yr at eastern ranges and is very switched on in relation to the strengths and weaknesses of the younger players.

from my understanding he was a recruiting consultant at north where he helped them about 2 years ago prior to coming over to melbourne in a coaching capacity.

Thanks Hendo. The Consulting must have been incorporated into his "bench coach' role, as reported in a Roos forum.

Barry will do a good job - a much respected junior development figure for a while now. Paul Collins will be a loss from the network, though. He had an excellent record at Essendon for a number of years - he lived in the East Keilor area and was directly responsible for identifying a significant amount of talent from that area (both in the draft and pre-draft eras). He was highly respected by Danny Corocoran and CAC, hence making the move to the Demons. A good addition to the Saints recruiting team.

I'm surprised at the general lack of enthusiasm and discussion regarding his appointment, and even more surprised that the club themselves haven't made the announcement on the website, instead choosing to promote him as the innovations coach/teacher organising their class room activities. Perhaps they are waiting for the right moment?

Is this is a case of people not being able to "move on" from their disappointment surrounding Cameron's departure?

If that's the case, go and barrack for Richmond - Get over it!

In case anyone's wondering about his knowledge of junior football ranks, Barry Prendergast coached the Eastern Ranges Under 18 TAC Cup team from 1998 to 2002 and (whilst premierships are not necessary the be all and end all at that level) he coached them to a flag in 2002 as well as a losing grand final in 2000. Among the players he coached at the Ranges was current Hawthorn captain Sam Mitchell, the Clokes, Michael Firrito, Brad Fisher, Lindsay Gilbee, Simon Godfrey (gulp), Guy Richards, Nick Malceski, Kade Simpson and Troy Simmonds.

His coaching record doesn't guarantee a brilliant recruiting record in the future but he's obviously been around and knows the ropes as far as junior footballers are concerned.

It was difficult enough trying to assess the recruiting record of CAC over 10 years, let alone trying to discuss the merits of an untried recruiting officer's appointment.

And you'll find that CAC's appointment at Tigerland was greeted with mixed responses by their feral supporters.

My comments were based on some of the views from this thread, which eluded to there being "big shoes" to fill.

Fair enough, are you speaking for you or all of demonland?

To answer your question - It interests me....I get as excited about recruiting and player development as I do about the games - That's just me 12 months a year (not just October)

I'm surprised others aren't that interested or willing to comment on Barry's appointment, but that's OK - I can see why

To me, every addition the club makes to the staff is a reflection of the club and the direction it is going in.

Who we recruit as a recruiting manager, is as important as the players we recruit, because the guys we recruit will be a reflection of him.

Recruiting is very much at the hub of things.. but for all intents and purposes its over for the moment. The scouts will I have no doubt start many fresh pages and augment others as the year goes by but given we've just effectively changed 25% of the team I'm more preoccupied with the here and now than a tomorrow 9-10 months down the track.

the season hasnt started..im not even thinking of recuits other than those on the track !!

    It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.
