POSTGAME: Rd 04 vs Gold Coast

So we're just keeping a lid on it, taking it one game at a time...

Still buzzing over that win. Knocking them out of top spot and bringing ourselves into the top six (for now). Awesome.

Bring on the Bombers.

We desperately need to recruit at least 2 x 200+cm key position players to develop over the next couple of seasons. King and Read's 6 goals when our defenders were doing well showed that. Just lucky that Andrew had an off day in defence.

You're probably right.

The funny thing is Claz probably won't, and really, Claz deserves more Demon angst than Tracc.

Sure Tracc wanted out, but we got 3 first rounders in the trade and his massive salary of our books. And its not as if he didn't play well for us last season.

I always loved Claz, but bottom line is pre his hammy related melt down, with his off field stuff he was super high maintenance. And once injured, he was totally unprofessional in how he managed it for the rest of that season (before being kicked out of the Anglesea preseason camp and told to go away and decide if we wanted to play AFL football)

Yes, I believe he was struggling with mutiple issues, and I think the club did the right thing by supporting him to address them. And he did seem to do the hard yards to get to netter place, played pretty well too in his last two seasons.

But he's gone, we got nothing for him tradewise and have to pay half his million dollar salary for the next 5 years.

Clarry won't because we forced him out.

I would like to see Langford play more half forward. I feel his first step is too slow for a genuine midfielder, but he has serious forward craft. It might mean he and Culley fight for the same spot, but he presents as so powerful and natural inside and around F50.

Yeah agree. He'll never make it as a mid. Reminds me of Diesel Williams, Dane Swan, Robert Harvey, Sam Mitchell and Matt Priddis.

How good was King in identifying Kolt could play the way he has been so far this year. The kid will learn a lot from the roles he's been given. Not enough kudos for a player with barely 20 games under his belt at the age of 20 - and when given the chance he can capitalise on his hard work.

Persist with him fans - he can play.

I liked the look of GCs Jed Walter. He is ooc end of this season and would be good fit in our forward line imo.

You talk like every listed player is a future star when the reality is that there are numerous players who will never get past C grade level. Hundreds in fact

So there's plenty of room for journeymen or for players that can fill a void

We should know, we've recruited and turned over any number of players who at best, are there to fill a void or are just depth players

Not every recruit is going to have a chance of becoming a gun player

Bonner as a depth player providing a bit of value is a distinct possibility ... but not necessarily at the MFC

But if Adams is another NQR, what do we do if Petty & Lever get injured? For starters, we'd need TMac to stay upright

eh? i basically implied he's a very good vfl-level player - which he clearly is

oh, and i'd like him to be in a casey premiership or three!

if petty and / or lever get injured, it's tmac or gawn to chb! the big fella always said he thinks he could be a full back

I think a midfield that has a mixture of speed and contested ability is the one that will test us. Suns are one paced and IMV slow around the ball and rely on pace from behind the contest to handball chain or link up quickly.

Not sure Anderson, Powell and Touk would count as one paced, maybe not express but they’re great midfield runners.

We took advantage of Tracc and Humphrey out and especially of Rowell being underdone.

I feel like Rowell has been best on against us for most of the last 5 or so games. No doubt he was rusty but Steele, Sparrow and even Windsor and Kozzie pressured and tackled him superbly.

steele had a good post-game interview where they said that with rowell they tried to stick to his right hand side to limit his quick hands as he was clearly struggling post-finger injury with handling the ball cleanly

smart tactics

I haven't seen a lot of Bonner but he looked better than VFL level yesterday

As previously stated, most clubs take a chance on at least 5- 6 players every year and that includes players they already have listed

"Let's give him another year on a low salary, he might turn it around"

I can imagine the above gets said a lot (by all of the clubs)

And on this site especially, too many sweat the small stuff on depth players (or role players)

You're going to have those types whether you like it or not

How many players in the AFL system? 900? How many are AFL standard? 600? 500?

Apologies as I don't have time to read it all, but stoked with that win! Is Melksham injured? What's up with his knee anything?

Also I really hope CJ isn't brought straight back into the side, surely everyone agrees we seem better without him, for now at least.

The bloke who also stood out to me was Bonner ... and if clubs are going to keep a few mature aged players around for experience and so forth, why not him?

We're doing it with T-Mac & Melk for good reason

I understand Bonner is not on an AFL list anymore but the bloke can play. A mature aged 29yo for a club in the mid-season draft?

Keep a watch on Billings getting a call up to the Dogs in a similar situation. If he stops kicking for goal like someone with shell shock he could still add something.

Bonner’s always looked great until genuine AFL pressure comes on. Then his brilliant kicking gets ugly.

And the back flank is such a durable position and also one where most clubs can send a midfielder back then fill that depth mid spot (eg. Brisbane with Fletcher last year).

Ken Hinkley’s in favour of smaller lists and teams having more freedom to pull in replacement players when needed. Personally I’d suspect that would be a disaster for development and for non footy states especially. But it’s an interesting one for someone like Bonner.

Fair enough

There's a lot of folk here not happy with CJ or Adams. Laurie, McAdam & Henderson as well. Even Jeffo, AJ & Campbell are under scrutiny

For some here, a line has already been ruled through most of the above (not my view)

But you can't just get rid of X amount of players, just like that

They have to be replaced and of course, contracts come into play as well. Especially with CJ

There's just not that many AFL standard players in the system

Irrespective of how we go against Essendon, that Brisbane game in a fortnight will be fascinating and a great test of where we're at.

We're going in as $1.26 favs against the Bombers so in many ways it's a must win. Did we see the above coming?

But if we're off and the Bombers are on, we can lose. We can't necessarily control what they bring but we can control what we bring ... i.e. the right attitude

Lose and the early narrative won't be about our next game vs Brisbane but what happened against Essendon

Win against the Dons means the game against the Lions becomes (dare I say it) a blockbuster (remembering that we'd be 4 & 1 entering the encounter)

Wasn’t an off day, he’s just incredibly overrated in general

Bad cramp.

And don’t agree - I think our style suits his strengths and in the counter factual that he was playing the last two weeks we would be signing the virtues of Jiath.

Wasnt that fun.

Was at the game and have watched the replay.

Neither team scored in the last 7 minutes 38 secs

Trelly played better on the replay.

Culley tries to take too many marks with only one arm. I assume his broken arm is causing some grief.

Kolt needs to practise handballing from below his knees.

A great team performance.

One of the common comments from the replay was What an entertaining game.

Talking of byes. We have defied the odds!

Our last two op have had 2 weeks rest and we won both convincingly.

Our fitness levels must be through the roof!

btw, King has an unblemished record at the G.

May it become our fortress!

I’m glad we didn’t have an 18 day break after 2 games

Playing opening round is not the big advantage many think it is.

Quite the opposite imo

Apologies if posted already,

Just saw the herald sun voting for best player of the game.

2 Melksham

1 Lachlan Gulbin (GC)

Might need to send in a ‘please explain‘

Your first live match in 20 years and aren’t you glad you came?!?!

It was fabulous! I'd been told the games are horribly noisy and too much music and wow, I really had fun! I thought the goal music was stupid before I went, now I can appreciate that at least some of the players like a good singalong...

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
