PREGAME: Rd 04 vs Gold Coast

My takes

Petty is miles too slow to be a defender. But keep him in. When he is confident and playing well he is a machine. He also supports Lever very well and we need his size against King and Read.

Latrelle Pickett is playing well, and doing all the little things that Steven King will love. Keep him in for sure. I think one of him and Chandler has to impact the scoreboard more.

It is too soon to bring Max Heath in. The absence of VFL this weekend killed us. I do think JVR needs some support, whether it be from the midfielders or his fellow forwards.

I think our biggest struggle in the 1st quarter vs Carlton was that: The forwards were purely playing as forwards. Backs purely as backs and mids as mids. The team was not going that extra mile to help out. A huge example being K Pickett, who when started roaming more, killed it.

For me its paddy Cross for melksham. Not nessascerily happy as I would prefer matthews but I think it is right.

CJ for AMW if fit if not rivers

Matt Rowell is confirmed as playing for the GC.

Disappointing but not surprised. He was earmarked weeks ago as returning for this game.

I don't think I've seen clearance dominance as much as Rowell's game against us last year (the earlier game). He also got 5 out of a possible 6 brownlow votes against us last year.

Potential Rivers and Turner in strengthens us but also brings back the too many defenders problem. Don't think the club will do it but I have always liked Disco up forward he has a real X factor there has kicked some ripper goals in his short stints in attack.

Not entirely sure where to go with selection this week but I don’t see the need for another defender unless there’s suddenly a big Rivers recovery or we think we can play 4 talls without losing run. Kolt’s looked comfortable across half back and our midfield has done better without the tagger.

I’m a bit doubtful that Disco, or any of the 3 key forwards are ready to go.

So I’d give Heath a run to mix up our forwards set up and semi rest the veterans.

If he’s ready to go give Matthews a run as the 23rd man, if not go with Laurie and play Sharp and Latrelle a little close to goal.

Hate Salem in the backline. Wayyyy too slow.

I rather see him up the ground kicking inside 50 or not in the team at all.

Rivers and Laurie in for Cross and CJ?

He is coming 5th in the esteemed Demonland POTY so he must be doing something right.

Agree he wasn't good on Sunday though

If DIsco is ready to return, does he replace Petty or T Mac?

I'm tempted to give T Mac the job on Ben King who's barely an inch taller than Harry McKay (admittedly more than an inch better in form though)

Petty wasn't perfect but he also did some good things and was critical in giving us some height and strength in the back half (with some minutes relieving Max in ruck)

Of the goals you mention I'm not sure of each one but at least one of those could be blamed on Lever who let a ground ball go straight through his legs

Kind says we will make mistakes. That’s ok if you are going all out to win. You are complaining to much. Perhaps haven’t played much

Just a few changes Werridee

B: Lever, McDonald, Salem

HB: Tholstrup, Turner, Howes

C: Langford, Sparrow, Windsor

HF: Chandler, van Rooyen, Culley

F: Fritsch, Mihocek, Heath

FOLL: Gawn, Steele, K.Pickett

IC: Lindsay, Langdon, Sharp, Petty, Moniz-Wakefield

EMERG: , L.Pickett, Kentfield prefer both to play limited time at Casey

Petty the ultimate emergency can pinch hit for Turner if he is short of a run or can cut out for max in the ruck and JVR who must be played fulltime forward and Heath who may need exposure to AFL..

Mw can replace Tholstrup if he is needed to tag or cut out Salem

Heath played well at Casey last match and can provide support for Max and an xtra tall to create space

Latrell is exciting but I reckon can have run at Casey to build up his presence not just impact. Use his pace at that level to cut them apart and force his way into the team against Essendon.

Rivers may need an extra week recovery same as Kentfield

We do need to see how player perform at Casey Jefferson and Kentfield l

Matthews got a chance for swap with Lattrelle?

Where would you play a slow player up the ground?

No one is loving Salem’s form right now, but until Bowser is back we don’t have a better option. His second half against Carlton was good

Agreed. Just thought I'd leave it here in case anyone was interested in how other people rate our young talent. I thought they were on the money, but the 23 year old age cut off is deceptive for our group which has a few stars just above that age.

Heard it after 12 pm so

Anyway rumour. Plus they might decide not to risk him even if its true his hammy isnt so bad.

Just watched Daniel Hoyne on First Crack. He highlighted Melb. He said that in the 8 years they have tracked the “speed of ball movement “..,the AFL average is 100 ..we are 161 highest . Our speed of ball movement from a set position i.e. mark or free kick is 205 …fastest in AFL history. He highlighted a few plays ..some that came off & some that didn’t but he said the Club will wear that. He said Melb fans should strap themselves in. When asked if it was sustainable..he said we might get opened up against the better teams but if GC isn’t on defensively.. look out ..we could open them up .,,

Mitch Cleary just said on Agenda Setters that Riv will be back in the team this week.

I saw that. It would of been handy to know how it was measured- I mean what's 100? What's 200?

Really couldn't give a flying fig if he plays or nit... but if he does... make those footsteps loud !!

The Sun's had a good first up win against Geelong however their next two were Richmond and the Eagles. Both poor sides who have been filling bottom 4 sports for some time. I think we start on fairly equal terms.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
