TRAINING: Monday 9th February 2026

Featured Replies

We may be getting a better look at who's in our best 23 from today's training photo gallery. It appears that our first team players were selected in the blue team's forwards and the white team's backline, while the midfielders were evenly mixed. Most of these are probably as expected. Interesting to see Melksham straight back into the ones.

WHITE

DEFENDERS (first team)

  • Tmac

  • Disco

  • Lindsay

  • Taylor (featured on both teams)

  • Howes (may have been playing on the wing)

  • Lever

MID (evenly spread across both teams)

  • Windsor

  • Steele

  • Sparrow

  • Heath

FWD (reserves)

  • AJ

  • Mentha

  • Kolt (may have been a mid)

  • Matthews

  • Kentfield

BLUE

DEFENDERS (reserves)

  • Taylor (featured on both teams)

  • Berry

  • Adams

MIDS (evenly spread across both teams)

  • Rivers

  • Langdon

  • Koz

  • Gawn

  • Langford

FORWARDS (first team)

  • Roo

  • Chandler

  • Fritsch

  • Latrelle

  • Melksham

  • Jeffo

Petty was pictured in a blue top, however it appeared that he was running laps of the oval.

Not pictured: May, Salem, Viney, Culley, CJ, Laurie, Bowey, McAdam, Mihocek, Campbell, Sharp, White, Onley, Henderson, AMW

Kentfield in the batman mask. Possible fracture somewhere?

Or maybe he'd just returned from performing some super-hero task and hadn't changed.

You might be onto something here.

I believe he now wants to be known as Clark Kentfield and has been seen hanging around in the vicinity of phone booths. (Ask your grandparents, kids)

With team selection speculation reaching Saturday Night Fever levels on DL.

Our young proto-champion patiently awaits his curtain call on the wings.

My interest in this subject is already waning.

Is that on purpose?

Edit* by the club?

Going by the photos, Adams has put on some good upper body size. Disco is also looking in good physical condition.

For those that attend training, who has made the best of their off seasons physical-wise (either/or size and conditioning)?

For information, the SSP signing period ends 2 March. So plenty of time for them to assess both Viney and McAdam

Does anyone know if a LTI needs to be season ending to get supplementary players, or just to mid season? If the latter both Viney and McAdam would seem to fit in there.

Pretty sure it has to be season ending. Similar to how we got both Henderson and Culley with the season ending injuries ro AMW and McAdam.

Agrees, Roo.

AFL rules on the Long-Term Injury (LTI) list allow clubs to temporarily replace injured players who are expected to miss a minimum of six weeks . Players on the LTI cannot compete during this minimum duration, allowing clubs to activate a rookie or elevate a player without salary cap penalties for the replacement player.

Whilst we know about Viney's injury the situation with McAdam as far as I know, has not been made clear.

This seems like the old LTI/rookie list rule to me. I didn't think rookies needed to be elevated to play AFL anymore.

The rules from 2021 (when it was instituted) say that it needs to be a year ending injury or retirement, at which time they are placed on the inactive list and replaced with an SSP

I looked at the AFL rule book published in 2023 (rule 26 on pp 100,101). Nothing about the injury needing to be season ending - player out for a minimum of 6 rounds. Primary listed player is replaced by a Cat B rookie.

BTW Ricky Mentha our only Cat B rookie (I think).

Fair enough, although I think the rules for a Cat B listed player and SSP/PSP player are different (which I acknowledge wasn't included in my previous post).

The AFL rule book for 2024, also in rule 26 on pg. 99-100 says that to get someone from the SSP/PSP (i.e., train on player), the AFL listed player needs to be on the inactive list, which means they are ineligible to play that season unless another list spot opens up and the club gets permission from the AFL.

Is Oscar Berry category B? If not, what category is he?

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
