With Zanker out of contract, it seems to me the Club would not have had a lot of leverage - I think they did well to get what they did.

I guess the only leverage we had was that she really wanted to go to Freo, or WA at least. If a deal wasn't done I don't think she'd have wanted to take her chances in the draft.

“She” being Nikita.

Why do we keep getting involved in deals that do very little for us and help other clubs improve?

Why are you upset about trading 17 for 14 and 27 for a Suns F2 that will be better than 27?

This looks a clear win.

Report that Mia Austin who Carlton wants out is favouring a trade to Melbourne.

Even with Zanker leaving I’m a little surprised key forward is a priority but she’s got talent and presence. Even if it hasn’t all clicked for her yet.

Hmmm. Can't but help get the feeling now Carlton have Bohanna, Scholz, S. McKay, etc., Austin is basically a cast off.

Is Austin ahead of Gall? Gall is promising but hasn't done a whole lot. We need someone to replace Zanker hopefully one of Gall or Austin can do that.

This best 21 is dedicated to Demonstone while he continues to give me positive feedback I'll continue to do it.

B: Taylor, Gillard

HB: Goldrick, Lampard, Chaplin

C: McNamara, Purcell, Mackin

HF: Fitzsimon, Harris, Wotherspoon

F: Hore, Austin

FOLL: Pearce, Hanks, Heath

IC: Paxman, O'Hehir, Mahony, Bannan, Campbell

EMERG: Pick 9, Pick 14, Ebert

Rest of the squad: Pisano, Gall, Dethridge, Beasley, Horisk, Rigoni

I expect A.Mackin and Hose won't be given new contracts.

I expect Hose will be given a new contract, as she has almost recovered from her back injury. As far as I am aware and is rated highly. We need a succession plan for L. Pearce soon.

I also wonder if it’s time for Paxy to hang up the boots?

I'm not so concerned with Pearce as Campbell is the obvious successor there.

Could Hose step into Zanker's role?

A big ask for someone untried at the level.

Hose already has a contract for 2026 which was confirmed when Ebert came onto the list

Campbell still looks a long way off to me. There is clearly talent there, but we lost a lot of momentum every time she went into the ruck in the final series, particularly against North. Hopefully Pearce can hang on for at least another two seasons.

Dethridge won’t get a contract then

Yes, it's looking that way. If so, then maybe back to Casey VFLW to upskill. There's a lot to like.

With 19 teams set for 2028 there will be second opportunities if she's serious about footy.

Melbourne receives: Mia Austin

Carlton receives: 2026 second-round pick (tied to Fremantle) and a 2026 third-round pick (tied to Melbourne)

Thoughts on Kristie-Lee Weston-Turner being forced into the draft?

She can clearly play if she went pick 1, but there seem to be some big question marks around her character and her durability.

A double hyphen name. Doesn’t get much more Melbourne than that.

Mia is a good get. And we didn’t give up too much

Thoughts are that no one will draft her until north do so

North aflw remind me of hawthorn aflm of the 2010s

I don’t like em but they sure are winners

Given North were offering pick 37 for a player who was the #1 pick two years ago, you sort of have to wonder what had happened to her. She now has to go into the draft. I do hope someone (preferably with draft pick 36) selects her and she doesn’t get to Nth just to make them ever stronger.

Yes I know that Zanker is a proven player but both her and Weston-Turner were uncontracted. It does make we got for her look substantially better. Imagine being the Bulldogs right now.

I think the dogs held down on principle. North were absolutely low balling and that's poor form.

She wasn't getting a game at the Bulldogs for whatever reason. And presumably will have a hard time getting into the team at North, at least for a little while. Is there also a question mark over why the Bulldogs haven't been able to develop a player that was highly rated? I guess North are in a position to bank on being able to get more from her with little risk.

The Club's article has her as a 'tall 'forward'. This comes across as a 'we lost Eden but here's Mia' play. It's 5'10" replacing 6'0", actually, but the highlights do show a bit of Eden-like ability and aggression. We'll see. Though it does offset, a little bit, any misgivings that the Zanker trade was 'unders' (I personally think the end result of 2 first round picks for a team that finished 3rd ain't so bad...)

Carlton originally chose Mia with pick 18 in the 2022 draft. This was the same one we got up Mauve Chaplin for pick 44 and Georgia Gall for pick 72! Handy.
