Gold Coast AFLW are interested in Demons star midfielder/wing Eliza McNamara.

Ex Demon Lily Mithen, is leading the push for the Suns to move to get McNamara

  • Author

IN-DEMAND key forward Eden Zanker has spoken publicly for the first time about her reasons for a potential move from Melbourne.

The out-of-contract Melbourne tall is weighing up significant interest from Fremantle and West Coast.

Zanker herself hails from Natya, a small northern Victorian farming region about an hour from Swan Hill.

"My partner (Nikita) is from there, so that's definitely one of those things," Zanker told the W Download podcast from the W Awards Coral Carpet on Monday night.

"Melbourne city is pretty chaotic, so it's probably getting the better of me at the moment.

"I guess just the lifestyle piece as well – I absolutely love the Dees, and if you could pick it up and put it somewhere more rural, and away from everything, it'd be perfect, but unfortunately you can't do that. So probably more of a lifestyle change, really.

"We'll keep working through some things, keep having conversations with Melbourne, and keep having conversations outside of that as well. Haven't set anything in stone yet, so the next month will be exciting."

Don’t know how that happens. She’s contracted and GC need a bazillion draft points for all of their gun academy players

Due to their academy the Suns have to find some way to fit in 4 of the likely top 6 draft picks. This is why they are auctioning off pick 1. You’d think the chances of picking up all of those players PLUS Eliza Mac would be remote. Well 🤞 anyway.

Oh, man. After losing Lil this would be a heart breaker!

What news on our new coach? Somewhat urgent if we're to put ourselves in a position to be attracting interest the other way.

In the absence of a replacement for Mick, are there any rumours of interest the other way? If Eden is leaving, what about prising out one of the two Power girls who topped the goal kicking?

Why would anyone want to play for GC in AFLW? They've won three games in two years, change coaches every five minutes and play in front of 6 people every week.

Mithen's time at the MFC was clearly up, but it would be a disaster to be losing players of McNamara's calibre.

We should be having a look at Charlie Rowbottom and see if she wants to play at a real club.

Yes, I've been eyeing her for a while. Originally a Melbourne girl who "mysteriously" nominated Queensland as her destination in her draft year. She might want to come back home. Provided the AFL doesn't get in the way, of course. 🙄

Similar sentiment to Nibbler’s when he was leaving us. Kinda makes it even sadder because you know they still love the club 😢

I wonder what her continued conversations with Melbourne could be about? If her only issue is about being rural no conversation with us is going to change the fact that we play in a city. Anyway, last I heard Perth was also a city.

She’s contracted so the club can make her stay. I assume the conversation is about allowing a trade.

Thanks BDA, I wasn't aware of that. I think she might be a curator at Cranbourne Racecourse outside of her AFLW commitments. Maybe we can find her a hobby farm in west Gippsland and let her just train at Casey.

Eden Zanker told a function in the Hassett Room during the season that she was quitting her job on the ground staff at AAMI Park to become a full time footballer.

Zanker is out of contract. McNamara is contracted for another year.

I see. If that’s the case then she’s as good as gone.

Yep, this could leave us looking a little rudderless with out an appointed coach.

Macca is one of my faves. Both her and Shelly are just ferocious.

It's great being able to watch a comp like this where players with tiny frames can still have a massive impact on games.

Would hate to see EMac go. I want her to get that Demons premiership after missing out in 2022. Fingers crossed!

Not trade related at such, but this is a little bit of progress for the comp, especially fringe players. Essentially 3 weeks of VFLW H&A overlap (and 3 more for finalists) for non-selected players to compete in. This season the overlap was only during VFLW finals.

We haven't had a heap of players languishing in the scrimmages but hopefully next season we'll have a fit list, so these opportunities for non-selected players to play proper games will be beneficial early in the season.

The League is also set to trial double-headers featuring VFLW and AFLW sides in next season's fixture as a result of the change.

AFLW players will have greater opportunity to push for selection in the reserves next year

😢 I’m so sad to see Dingo’s been delisted. Didn’t see it coming at all. I thought she was playing well enough to be kept on our list.

Her last game was good, surprised to see her dropped and now axed.

Good to see the team get together for Liv's first run in 97 days:

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/FRkM0uy98To

I’ve watched Liv at every session (she’s close to the boundary and it’s a pleasure to watch her). She’s inspirational to say the least. She follows every instruction from the physios. She does not stop. Her resolve to be back to her best is to be admired, and she’s so disciplined. As I said, she’s an absolute inspiration.

I know she’s been champing at the bit to be allowed to run, so this video is heartwarming and thank you SO much for posting it, DIO.

We are a bit smaller at a little over 2 mil people.
