Worst Ever Draft Decision (& Best)

Featured Replies

2010 Pre Season Draft

We selected Joel McDonald who had been delisted by Brisbane. Played 44 games.

Despite having Jack Grimes at the Club we overlooked Dylan Grimes who went next pick - 234 games, AA, B&F, 3 Flags & Captain.

Probably our best deal was effectively getting Bernie Vince for Col Sylvia in 2013.

Colin played only 6 games for Freo while Bernie played 100 for us & won a B&F.

The best selection was Stephen Tingay in 1987 at pick 50 .Stinger was an absolute champ who, but for a freak accident that interrupted his career, would have been an all time great .The worst pick was Donald Cockatoo -Collins with pick 11 in 1995.This was the "feel good " pick used to enable us to partner him with his brother David whom we had inexplicably drafted the previous year .The two played a combined total of 9 games but started our tradition of "feel good " drafting. This has has continued to the present draft .

I don't know what made you wake up this morning hating Joel McDonald, but his selection wasn't even a podium finish for poor selections just in that draft period, and coincidentally that very same draft also includes our best draft choice ever.

As JT's Mama always said.

Do you mean Max at 34 in the 2009 ND?

Aye.

And I'll always find it hilarious that we had four top-20 picks which went wrong each in different ways, and then selected a hall of fame player at 34.

Noting that back then the drafts were staggered and recorded a bit like cricket seasons '2009-10'. So 2009 national draft is the same drafting period as the 2010 pre-season draft.

Weird that footywire has a typo which makes both 1 & 2 'priority' selections.

And before anyone else plays the 'look who we could have had' game.

Yes, we totally could have selected Martin, Fyfe, Duncan, Gawn and Gunston. Congratulations.

Well said. Hindisght is 20/20. Lucas Cook was the prime example of this. In 2010, he was named AA CHF amongst names like Treloar, Libretore, May, Heppell and Gaff and was likened to Nick Riewoldt. A player of his ilk was a clear necessity at the time of his drafting.

There are a lot of variables and sometimes you hit and sometimes you miss. It’s part and parcel. Even someone as good as Jason Taylor has had misses on top of his unbelievable scouting and drafting record.

It was actually a shocker as DG was a gun. Cant think of a worse draft blunder at that time.

There was a lot of speculation about Dylan Grimes as his brother Jack was at Melbourne & we had the first pick.

Worse was that Dean Bailey & the Club went on a mini PR spree telling supporters about the recruiting coup & what a gun JM was when he was at best an average plodder.

It is really hard to say given our draft history before JT. I love every player who plays for the red and blue so I find this thread difficult. Lucas Cook, Jimmy Toumpus, Gysberts and Cale Morton were all soft and we wouldn’t take any of them now. Luke Molan was tough as nails but set back by injuries. They all went early but were probably the wrong picks.

Hindsight is easy.

2019 draft was a ripper and is hard to beat

added kossie, luke jackson and trent rivers

favourite recruit was Bernie vince. best recruit was steven may

Literally every 2009 pick before Joel MacDonald was also a pick where we didn't take Dylan Grimes.

More like a lottery; having pick #1 is like 50 tickets and #2 maybe 30 and #60 maybe 1. Hindsight is often infuriating. Remember that nearly every player drafted after maybe #25 was missed by EVERY team. Admittedly sometimes clubs choose a player later in the draft cos they know/expect no one else has rated him this highly. But overall, champions have been missed by every club numerous times.

You might get a laugh out of this …

Paul Daffey AFL PHANTOM DRAFT 2010

12. MELBOURNE - Daniel Gorringe
Height:
200cm
Weight: 88kg
DOB: 02/06/92
Club: Norwood (SA)
Draft range: 9-14
If Gorringe gets through to 12, the Demons have a bargain. His ability to find teammates with deft tap work is his trademark. He can also go forward. He's played senior footy in the SANFL and you imagine he'll adapt to the AFL quicker than most young ruckmen. Was tipped to be top 10 all year, but the cards have fallen differently.

Did we dodge a bullet 🤣🤣🤣🤣

By the way … Daffey had Cook as a 2nd round pick

27. NORTH MELBOURNE - Lucas Cook(compensation)
Height:
196cm
Weight: 81kg
DOB: 03/03/92
Club: North Ballarat Rebels (Vic)
Draft range: 25-35
Key forward with a clean pair of hands whose endurance was indicated by his top-10 finish (10.34) in the three-kilometre time-trial at the combine. He also finished in the top 10 in the kicking drill. Cook would have been a monty for the top 20 before his form fell away in the second half of the under-18 championships. He'll build up and become more durable.

In 2010, I remember I was very keen at Dees first pick on Dion Prestia, Tom Lynch, Jack Darling or Ben Jacobs. Cook was a surprise.

Are you claiming Matthews or especially Pickett were awful picks?!! While I agree being feel good is not THE reason to pick someone it can be A reason. I suspect this past week it was the latter.

Surely skipping Dustin Martin in the Scully / Trengove was the biggest fail.

In hindsight yes but Scully/Trengove were pretty much universally acknowledged as 1 & 2 that year.

Not exactly correct. This was the 2009 Pre Season Draft. Only 7 players were taken. We took JM with pick 1 & Richmond got Grimes with pick 2.

A terrible blunder.

Arguably the best player we ever drafted was also our worst decision because he never actually agreed to play with us. In the 1986 draft (the first ever draft) we selected Darren Jarman. A star with Hawthorn and Adelaide...but not with us.

Dylan Grimes was available for the entire national draft, in which we had six selections, none of which were Dylan Grimes.

I'm beginning to convert my irritation into a kind of petrie dish fascination.

Thank you Captain Obvious. So enlightening.

And in the PSD we had first pick & picked a dud instead of a champion - and then told supporters it was a coup.

I’ll take ‘ Things that never happened’ for $400, thanks Alex.

Cranky, who remembers these things? It's about 15 years in the past - let it go, before it eats you out (if it hasn't already).

I'd much prefer you give us your judgements on this years draftees and if negative, tell us who we should have picked. Then wait 15 years and then brag about your expertise if proven correct. But please don't give me Harry Hindsight comments.

Taking 4 players before Nat Fyfe wasn’t exactly state of the art drafting by the club in 2009.

Also, (allegedly) promising Rory Sloane’s parents that we’d pick him with our second to fourth selection after Jack Watts. Only to then proceed to pick up Blease, Strauss and Bennell while allowing Sloane to be picked up by Adelaide in the 40’s.
