I think the only successor possible is Chook McLean.

What does everyone else think?

James McDonald should captain the Demons in 2008

Posted

David Neitz should captain Melbourne next year with Brock McLean, Matthew Bate and Jared Rivers as co-Vice Captains and a larger leadership group of maybe 5 beyond that.

None of those three are ready to captain in their own right next year but it gives us a proper second tier of leaders.

I'd like to see McLean captain with Sylvia and Rivers vice-captains.

Was leaning towards Brock like most others but don't know if he is showing enough recently, may still be a bit young

Posted

Cameron the Bruce!!!, I think he would respond well to added responsibility of being Captain, Brock as vice then take the next step after Bruce. If not Bruce then Brock

Bruce as captain?

Umm, no

We are supposed to be movng forward. A new era. An era of success, toughness and ruthlessness

Bruce as captain would be a disaster

That is the most sensible answer in this thread.

Neita will captain next year if he wants to, and in our 150th year, so he should.

McLean, Rivers and Bate to learn off him and be ready to take over in 2009.

I'd be happy if McLean was made captain next year, but only if all parties felt ready.

Why is Bate's name being thrown around?

Personally I don't like the idea of filling our leadership group with too many under 25s. McLean is an exceptional leader and has been since he arrived at the club. You can't say the same about Bate. Let him continue to learn the game as he is and become a very good player before lumping extra responsibilities on him.

Because the under 25s are the best hope we've got of going anywhere.

I think Bate does have some leadership skills, but you can replace him with Jones if that makes a difference.

The idea is to get a leader in each part of the ground. If Green returns to the forward line, he can get the gig instead.

I'm sick of having leadership groups full of players who can play, but can't lead. Is it a reputation group, or a leadership group?

Honestly can't wait for a new coach to come in and make some really big changes, starting with one of our biggest weaknesses, leadership.

To be honest, I am much more confident of Rivers being included than Bate but he seems capable of doing the on-field things that inspire team mates. Of the older brigade (discounting McDonald because he's over 30), I'd have Green as a vice captain. He has impressed me most of that middle age bracket this year.

Please highlight the box below to know the name of the next MFC captain. This is highly confidential, so please do not let it leave this board.

Cameron Bruce or maybe Brad Green

One minute you are all saying how Brock has poor form but its expected cos he has only played 50 something games next minute u want him captain. Doesnt make sense

He is too young, he will be captain after the next captain. That is if Neitz wants out which wouldnt suprise me

Depends entirely on the new coach! If it was Voss then I'd say we are a moral to have co-captains - probably Neitz, McLean, Rivers. Don't forget he was first appointed as a co-captain with Lynch and they shared the role for 3-4 years. He is a strong advocate of Matthews philosophies and this year Leigh has 5 captains! If it were to be someone like Pagan then McLean would be a certainty I reckon.

I really hope not. Melbourne is a more traditional club than Brisbane. We have only ever had the one captain and I hope it stays that way.

Besides is the 5 Captain system even working at Brisbane?

With all due respect, where has tradition got us in the last 40 years? People on this site often bemoan the lack of leadership in our current playing ranks - I say do whatever is going to best fast track leadership development. I'd say multiple captains is successful at Sydney and I'd say that working alongside Lynch in the early years made Voss a better Captain. Then again, I don't think Voss will coach Melbourne so it probably won't even be a consideration!

BBP - an inspired answer, and very funny stuff.

Sometimes I wonder what TJ - God bless him - is going to get up to once his career winds up.

Agree totally for Neitz in our 150th, Maybe next year one of the other youngsters may surprise and challenge Brock as a future captain eg Jones, Sylvia. So lets wait and see.

I think the question is, who should be the next captain, not who should be captain next year...

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
