This is just random musings but I swear I've been noticing the clubs social media accounts being far more active and dare I say it more creative (or at least more relevant in the current climate). We had the CJ video doing the rounds, "Man of Steele", Checkers, and I just noticed a Max Gawn post referencing the Simpsons.

One of my biggest criticisms of the club in recent years is our online presence has been absolutely shocking in creativity and fan engagement. I'm really hoping that the recent activity suggests they've addressed that and will be looking to be more than just a token account.

Pretty sure there has been a change of social media person. New person started not long ago.

I’m seeing a lot more in recent weeks I feel which is good. There’s an opening in the market also for a Dees fan with social media savvy (and a good sense of humour) to do a Dan Gorringe type page too. Other clubs also have these kinds of pages that do really well.

If you want to catch the eye of those youngins’ this is a way to do it. Any budding social media influencers out there Dees fans? Infiltrate their precious little minds with pro-demons propaganda in the algo, haha. Make a little bit of money from it too if it blows up.

Given the demographic of our supporter base, I don’t think there’d be too many people concerned with our social media presence (rightly or wrongly)

I noticed the same thing - seems to have got a bit sharper in the last couple of weeks. Website and socials have been pretty average really since Gibbo left.

Can you post it here, DP?

Are you confusing the Club's base with the 'Land base (my previous post gives me away...)

I meant the general MFC supporter base, not the fanatics of this forums

Sorry Tim - I don't actually have social media (aside from Demonland). My mum is visiting me in Sydney and she showed me the Insta post 😅😂

There were 6 or so pictures of Kozzy from previous seasons, but they were turned into short gifs where the background kind of moved subtly while Kozzy remained still.

Website and socials have been pretty average really since Gibbo left.

Yeah, with you on this one - BRING BACK GIBBO, he was the GOAT!

Seriously, I thought he was a bit of a weird cat, but actually respected that he did a decent job of bridging old worldly conservative nature of the MFC, while also playing to a younger audience in his own natural authentic way.

Max is our closest equivalent of Dan Gorringe and I think the time is right to give him some more air time in promoting the club again.  His Gus and Gawn podcast was always great entertainment and ended for obvious reasons, but I think a remake is there for the taking.  Should pair him up with Chin, Jake Lever or someone else in the team with a bot of personality and entertainment value.

Is it a different person running the women's team media?

Seems to be a heap more fun than the blokes has been for the last year or two.

I rang the Club recently to speak to the media folks (can't remember the reason but it was a constructive one) and reported on here. I couldn't get past the membership officer but she told me the media group were 'a team' and different individuals were responsible for different projects at different times. So I don't think there's an AFL/AFLW division?

p.s. Is Robbo still on the books? He seems to have disappeared on game day at Casey, after a very fan boy performance at the helicopter game!

Excellent mental health/sanity decision right here, haha

I think Gus would actually be perfect (and Max once he retires) to lean into making shorts that are a bit of a [censored] take or memeing on other teams and at times ourselves. Gus is widely liked and seems to have a cheeky sense of humour so that could work.

Outrage gets clicks, that’s just how the algorithm works (and why the world is hell, haha). So if you can walk the line between taking the [censored] but not being overly vitriolic about it, you can draw in a lot of non-Dees supporters. Gorringe has actually hit that sweet spot because he pots everyone (including Carlton and the AFL) but also praises other teams too at times. A lot of people say he’s a [censored], but that misses the point. He’s a [censored] that gets a lot of engagement which is all that really matters in internet world.

This exercise isn’t about promoting Dees upfront, it’s about getting people to click on a person associated with the Dees that flies the flag, making AFL content, mostly to non-Dees fans. Get people to like a Melbourne supporting person.

I’m a musician and coming back from a few years hiatus, that landscape has changed. It’s entirely social media now. You don’t exist unless you have a strong social media presence. So in saying that, we basically don’t exist compared to a lot of other clubs.

Only my opinion though, I’m deffo not an expert.

Hahaha until trade week!!

I love that Demonland doesn't have an algorithm (to pick up a comment from your next post, Bobo). People sort of behave themselves, the mods are pretty even handed/responsive, and there's a wide cross section of views... Also you get to understand the background/perspective of a poster over time and so can assess their posts in context. Reminds me of the internet when I was younger (...I even ran my own forum back then!)

Yeah, I like the approach that Dan Gorringe takes. He's great all round entertainment value IMHO.

On the topic of social media, while I agree that we want something a bit edgy and entertaining, I think there are lines that a club social media account shouldn't cross.

In the recent trade period, I noticed the GWS site practically trolling us with photos of Jessie and Bedford essentially welcoming Trac and Clarry right at the start of the trade period before any deals were done.

I generally like GWS post $cully era, but these posts really got up my nose and feel they were utterly unprofessional for the club's official site to be promoting.

One can only hope Robbo has decided to retire

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
