I have said it since the day they were drafted, and soon I will be vindicated

Sylvia is the most naturally talented footballer the Demons have had in their ranks fora long, long time

He is the total package -

Speed

Strength

Flair

The best vertical leap from the 2003 draft

Tough as nails

A beautiful kick

Great footy brain

Presents at the footy

Great tackler

He is a smokey for the Bluey ths year mark my words. God I hope he does a full pre-season in preparation for the 2008 campaign, because he is our X factor.

He will become the Voss, Ricciuto, Buckley etc.. of the MFC

YM, I am just staggered by how strong he is overhead. He was picked up at Number 3 in the draft, and he is now underlining this fact in most matches.

Biffinator.

Posted

he is awesome overhead, O'keefe will lose the best overhead mark for hieght tag very soon.

Y_M i love the kid too but i still think Mclean will be the better of the 2.

I just can't wait till they are both fit with a full pre season and rip the comp apart like bartel and ablett are doing.

As amazing as Brock has been, I have always had the feeling that mclean will be be more dependable, getting 25 plus possessions each week, plus clearances and tackles etc.

but i think Sylvia is starting to believe and has the X factor to turn games, sometimes I feel his agression needs to be channelled a bit more, but you would always take more fire than none anyday.

I hope these 2 stick as thick as thieves for the next 10 years.

There is much to be gained in the last part of this season.

Oh, amen to that :D !!!

Y_M you come up with some interesting stuff sometimes... and this may be a prediction that holds some water for you...

He's a dazzling player. And he's playing angry. I don't know if I agree with the assertion he'll eclipse Brock. But he certainly COULD...

When you look at so many players on our list that have GREAT strengths, and crippling weaknesses, Sylvia just warms the cockles of my heart.

I love looking at that draft year and seeing who other teams picked, and then looking at who they overlooked and we picked up :)

some very nice/accurate comparisons there.

Mclean - Bartel. Brilliant. Play very similar games.

Ablett - Sylvia. Nice. Starting off fwd and moving into midfield.

Bate - O'Keefe. Fantastic. Hard running HF.

I have been one to question Sylvia before but i have always hoped he will be like Goddard...in the fact it took him time to get to AFL standard. Saying that its way too early to be judging what type of players they will be and who will be better of the 2

Like a sieve.

Why did MFC take him with Sylvia with a priority pick in 2003 at No 3? Sylvia has always had the explosive attributes but has been bogged down with OP for so long.

There have been a number of posters on this site that have been backing Sylvia against the premature knives for some time now.

Its just Y_M flying his own flag again.

Posted

(assuming I read that correctly)

Flying his flag or not, and whether he had company or not... He has a point.

IMO Sylvia's major flaw is his short passes, a couple of times his deliver to the forwards was over their heads or at their feet.

But I think you're being blinded by Brock's bad form patch, just watch the last quarter of the EF Vs. St Kilda, nuff said. B)

not being pessimistic... just a reality chill pill all around.. Brocky has a few bad 'uns and he's off the boil.Suddenly he is no longer the second coming !!. At same tme the gas is turned up on Col and he's the beez kneez.

I fervently hope Sylvias fitess is bettering and his current enthusiasm continues. The thought of him still to get better nad more consistent is salivating. Brocky is experiencing for mine a learning curve....the lesson he had to have so to speak. That is the better you get the more attenion you'll have. Let him study the way of the "hird" and he'll find his mojo again.

sylvia is already better and will be better..... ive said it again and ill say it again

Brock Mclean overrated.

and ill say this again he still is a good player and may develop in to a great player....

i agree with Yze magik.... Sylvia = GUN

I know this is a Sylvia vs Brock thread but Millers game against Fremantle in that final last year has often been disregarded on this site (not by me I might add) so don't bring up Brocky's game last year as it appears that is "history" now and not relevant.

By the way Brocks pace is a concern and he has been caught with the ball at crucial times in the past few games. He is having trouble with the tag at the moment and when TJ is in the team some of the focus moves to him which frees up Brock.

As far as Sylvia is concerned his biggest problem is above his shoulders. Did himself no favours passing out in a nightclub and we won't mention his pre-season misdemeanour. If he matures and and gets himself right in that area and gets himself fully fit then the sky is the limit!

Posted

He is actually very quick when you watch him. Against Carlton he started 10m behind Kade Simpson and nearly caught him.

I have been saying he COULD be better than Brock for a while simply due to the fact that he has so much raw ability, but whether he will we won't know for a couple more years yet.

I simply cannot wait till McLean, Sylvia, Moloney and Jones are fully fit and in the midfield.

Posted
Lets hope he avoids passing out drunk at strip clubs in the future then

I'd prefer him doing that to riding shotgun with drug dealers

It is a healthy debate

Like you guys, I love them both, we all do

If we win a Premiership, these 2 blokes will be at the centre of it

Exactly right, and we need both of them to develop and mature into very good players (stars?) if we are to be successful.

We've invested heavily in both. McLean has more than returned the investment, while Sylvia is finally starting to show glimpses of brilliance.

McLean will always be the more reliable work-horse, and his leadership will always shine both on and off the field. He might not be the most talented, but he will always run the hardest, tackle the most, bleed when we lose etc...

Sylvia is more talented, and is more capable of producing the sublime. Consistency is what he really needs to achieve, and it is a big ask when he is yet to complete a pre-season in AFL. If he can get his body (and to a lesser extent his head) right, he can be anything.

Our under 23's are not the problem, our core senior players is who we really need to worry about.

This debate is the type that could occupy Demonlanders for the next ten years.

No I am sure it will be about Godfrey being labelled the most ordinary footballer to play 300 games of AFL! B)

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
