Now that he’s declared ‘it’s a job’ and there’s no attachment, can we consider this as business?

If Clayton has burnt the bridge, why do him the favour of paying half his wage just to get something meagre in return?

I see options here:

Any club taking him can have him at full price (maybe pay 500k of contract) for a second rounder

Or he can sit out a year and we agree to dissolve the contract.

His comments were below those expected as an employee of the club. I’m sure if he was to sook it up and return with an attitude of ‘stuff you guys I’ll stay and waste your money’ we could find plenty of ways to fine him and eventually dissolve the contract anyways.

I'd be staggered if any of these scenarios occured!

You'll be doing a lot of staggering then Picket. Best you get the " bottle of malt" off you know who and give yourself a plausible excuse 😉

I just have this sneaky idea a lot of this comes as no surprise to those looking to reset this fine club.

Two tenets you might want as a guide in a club.

No DH... and no one's bigger than the club...so all those with tickets on themselves please be on the 5 o'clock bus.

The Cats clearly don’t have a no DH policy.

but they have both the media and the AFL under their control.

Might be a bit late to state our negotiating position but I think it should be that he’s free to a good home provided they pay his full salary or very close to it.

How much we pay is then decided by the quality of the pick we get. I

You genuinely can’t make this stuff up. I did have a chuckle - the moving van, the first thing that came to mind and too honest pot shot, then the backtrack “it’s all business” as the van was reversing away.

King might’ve done that also given the chance

I wouldn't mind betting that King was part of last year's circus with Geelong, they would have got a fair bit of information on him last year, it's one thing to bring him in to a fresh club and try and rehabilitate him back to his somewhat best than it is to actually come in and coach him still in his same environment.

Love the guy as a player and everything he has done in the red and blue, but I'm now looking forward to the next 200 games of Rivers, Harvey, Lindsay, Kozzie, Windsor.

I wonder how keen GWS would be if they were paying his whole salary and not getting a free hit gift, it would be a whole different story I'd say.

I thought Clarrie was going to America in between telling Mitch Cleary to [censored] off. Trump must have said No!!!!

Maybe he thinks Sydney is in America. Academia not his strength.

He didn’t say our facilities were poor, he was asked about GWS’s facilities, then separately, asked whether he liked the Pies, he answered “better than Melbourne”. Unfortunately, Clayton’s value will only go down from here if he stays with us.

I mean it's pretty clear Clarry is hurt that we've pushed him out, and it's difficult to blame him. He was happy to stay, probably desperately wanted to repay the faith and then suddenly we hire a new CEO and a new coach and he's out the door, away from all the support networks he's built.

I fear there is more angst on its way.

GWS will redo Oliver's contract with whatever terms they agree. Oliver said last year he would take a cut to move out. If he does that with GWS and we did say we would pay 'up to $700k' we will end up paying the lion's share of his contract for 5 years. Given yesterday's comments I doubt he is amenable to ease the $ impact on mfc.

A case in point. If GCS take JUH with a very late pick they will redo his contract from $900k to $300k-$400k. Not saying that is what GWS will pay Oliver but fans need to be prepared to news mfc foots the lion's share of the contract.

Edit: same applies if he ends up at Coll and takes a pay cut which would make our payment so much more 🤮

We didn't push him out. The meeting was arranged the day before to be in his manager's office. Clarry's role was the agenda. The Manger would have given Clarry a heads up on what could happen with a new coach/CEO etc.

He was happy to stay on his terms, in his chosen role because he wasn't held accountable at mfc and most of those that had protected him (Green, Gawn, Richardson) are still at the club to somewhat cushion the impact of a new coach.

He has had 2 years to repay the faith,

His off field behaviour was well know to the club when he signed his mega contract in mid 2022.

Sadly, 'leopards don't change their spots' applies.

sometimes its best to call time on a destructive relationship

In the long term it'll be better for the club and Clarry to part ways

With some clear air in GWS he might be able to sort himself out and get back to his best

after 2 years of under performance, regression and relapses the chances of him getting back to his best with us are very low. too much history and baggage.

I think the decision to offer such a contract without any protections for the club was a big failing on the clubs part. Cannot be so stupid in the future. At least with Trac and Kossie long contracts you know you are getting professionalism

Going overseas? Wasn’t Clarry going overseas?? No it was just to Sydney, in fact Blacktown. The freefall has been severe and ugly as you’d expect in some emotional times. Getting told you’re effectively redundant does hurt

Bang. Bang. Bang. In 2021 👏👏👏

Boom. Boom. Kaboom !! In 2025 🧨

Last 4 Premiers

US - Oliver May

Cats - Stengle, Smith, Bruhn

Collingwood - Thug, DeGoey, get the idea

Brisbane - Zorko, Robinson

Just curious but why the hell wouldn’t we pro rata and salary reduction in the contract?

We could.

It simply depends on what is negotiated with GWS/Pies/? on picks/players/$

Contracts go both ways don't they. The club also commits to the player through thick and thin for that time and the player has that security. This is what we all bang on about when contracted players want out.

With Oliver he didn't want out he was committed and tried doing the right thing and we all think he was getting back to good. He deserves that security too and for the club to stick by him for the length of the long contract they also agreed to.

Pretty [censored] poor for a player to want out but much worse for a club to want to push a great player out especially when its someone like Clarry who obviously isn't your standard type personality.

Wonder what the day will bring 🤔 👀 🤔

no he didn't.

he's been nothing but a big headache for the club for the last 2 and half year's. Why do you think we want to move on from him.

we should have included behavioural clauses in his contract. big learning there for the club.

Here's a guy who ends up at the arrivals section instead of departures at the airport despite being there a billion times and then gets stuck at a boom gate in a mini van and manages to be found by the 1 footy journo in Blacktown..
