Farewell Clayton Oliver

Happen to be in Sydney this week and just been invited to go see the Swans - GWS derby on tomorrow evening. With so many ex Dees players playing who wouldn’t. Hogan is my favourite, but I also have a soft spot for Clayton. @Ghostwriter , I’ll pass on your best wishes to Clarry (if he still remembers you) and I’ll add that I hope that he finds contentment at his new home.

Actually, NC… Clarrie knows only one other person with the same first name as mine. She lives in Shepparton and her surname is Cobbledick. If you do get to talk to him when passing on my best wishes (and love) please be sure you say “… from Gosch’s” so as he doesn’t think it’s the other gal (this has happened before). Thanks x

Some interesting quotes

“I wish I had done it a couple of years ago as well. It would have been nice. I should have come up in 2023. It would have saved me a couple of years,” Oliver said.

“I had a good eight years at Melbourne, probably the last two years weren’t great. I am happy playing footy again, happy to be in a good spot and looking forward to a good year,” he said.

“They wanted to go a different way, which is fine, all the best.”

“Before that 2021 season I never thought I was going to be that good anyway,” he said.

“The way individuals get recognised is by being in a successful team. It is no point being a good player in a [censored] team, I am a big believer in that,” Oliver said.

“Every now and again, I get a few hellos but nothing like [in] Melbourne,” Oliver said. “I love it, to walk around and be a normal person, it’s pretty underrated.

95% of players are mercenaries. Quite sad that loyalty is not an important thing for them. It is pretty much the only thing for fans

Ghostwriter Cobbledick, what a great name for a Harry Potter character

I’m seriously asking this, has Clayton ever mentioned that he’s grateful to the club for anything post his exit? Grateful that the club supported him? Grateful he was able to win a premiership? Grateful for the friendships he made with teammates? Anything at all? I could very well have missed it, but I haven’t heard anything like that.

From the moment he met with King, until now, the behaviour he’s exhibited suggests he basically sees himself as being thoroughly wronged and the club, out of nowhere, and with no preceding reason to do so, kicked him to the curb and blindsided him.

And not, that he went completely off the rails by his own decisions.

We all mess up in life, I absolutely have more than a few times, but a part of growing and learning from those mistakes is taking accountability that the poor decisions we made (despite the emotional duress we experience through things like neurodivergence/mental health episodes) are still the decisions we made. Nobody forced him to do any of the things he did and the same goes for me in my life.

Anybody else see the severe disconnect here?

What an ungrateful [censored]. Would be almost worthwhile seeing one of those famous Pickett shirt fronts again

He seems like a very immature person.

Not a word….

and should never be forgotten

Let’s call it for what it is

The blokes a tool who was once at the elite level of his chosen sport because so many people gave their time to support him.

Yep. No self awareness at 28 years old. Yikes.

Unfortunately, like a lot of people in society, they struggle to take responsibility for their own actions / lives. It is far easier to blame someone else instead of looking internally.

I think it's great that he continues to do media, it just reinforces that we made the right decision to move him on at any cost and that he wasn't the right fit anymore.

He is no Rhodes Scholar or Rocket Scientist, we all know that, he is just a country kid who can play football very well.

I don’t expect much else from him.

He helped us win a flag and I will never forget that and at one stage he was my favourite Demon, but time moves on.

Each time he opens his mouth you can sense that he hasn't really got over the fact we punted him.

Yeah, but I think this is infantilising him to be honest. It’s akin to people saying CP is ‘influenced by his partner or his family’ which makes it out like he doesn’t have the ability to make his own decisions.

Hardly anyone is a Rhodes scholar or rocket scientist, plenty of people from the country don’t behave like this. Taking accountability for your own actions is a choice that builds character and builds maturity, it’s not a matter of intelligence. Maturity for the most part is built by your actions, it isn’t a thing that just happens ‘to you’.

I know very intelligent people that have chaotic lives and less intelligent people that have their life completely sorted. The difference between them for the most part is the choices they make.

Depending on how he conducts himself between now and retirement I can see him being welcomed back post career. His boofhead mate at GC less so.

Absolute good riddance to what was a cancer to this footy club.

Took the absolute [censored] out of the footy club and it finally took someone as strong as Steven King to finally call him out and get rid of this germ.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
