Tasmanians want the team, itโ€™ll have tremendous support and if the AFL do their job it will reinvigorate local clubs that have been neglected and dying for years.

they want a team, but 2/3rd don't want the stadium from the last lot of polling done earlier this year

martin flanagan summed it up better than anyone: https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/i-love-tassie-footy-and-we-need-a-team-but-the-afl-s-stadium-ultimatum-takes-a-special-kind-of-arrogance-20250609-p5m5x8.html

Assuming the AFL's cash reserves are back up post-COVID, any chances of them buying a percentage of the stadium to help fund it?*

the afl don't stay as a wealthy nfp by actually paying for anything - that's what governments are for!

Iโ€™d read that article by Flanagan, pity headquarters donโ€™t care.

I would not mind seeing the AFL strategy pertaining to overall league expansion that clearly indicates a vision and how talent pools will support this.

1bn for a 23,000 capacity stadium is utterly ridiculous. Insanity. taxpayers should not be footing a stupid bill like that

someone needs to come up with a sensible proposal for the stadium that delivers genuine value for money. not this pork barrelling waste of money

I've heard reports of a cost of one billion to build.

For a capacity of 23k.

This cannot be correct.

And 23 thousand is very short sighted.

They should be aiming at about 30,000.

And for much less in costs.

the report yesterday said the true cost will be closer to $1.8bn

Can the powers that be now take a moment to realise that this competition canโ€™t sustain any more teams.

Even worse will be an uneven number of clubs, meaning byes. Have they not looked at the mess called the VFL.

And no guess which clubs will get the better run with the byes.

Gold Coast folds and becomes Tasmania.

GWS relocates to Canberra and play a handful of games in Sydney every season.

Or North, who already play games in Tassie. Or Hawthorn who already wear the logo AFL Tasmania.

I suspect that now a name, brand, identity have been floated it would be hard , ne impossible to walk it back to a relocated vic team. The Ivory Tower have once again shown arrogance and ineptitude.

The kyboshing of the league by lumping the competition with uneven teams is regrettable if not laughable. Surely they had learnt. ( obviously not ) There doesn't even appear another on the horizon.

Who knows. Maybe theyโ€™ll build the stadium and it will become a tourist attraction like McCaigโ€™s Folly.

Dillonโ€™s Folly. Nice ring to it.

For a 23k seat stadium that's over $78,000 per seat. They'd want to be heated recliners for that!

Follow the $$$ Who would stand to line pocket the most??

Something stinky ๐Ÿ’ฉ about this whole business.

I reckon the plan is to drag Tassie by tow truck, and park it at Crib Point, to balance another Team opposite Geelong.

Clean and dry your backside like a toilet in Japan

If anyone couldn't see how this proposal was built on sand then I don't know what to say. No pun intended.

Which one

What a debacle.

600 mill for Adelaide oval, $1.6 billion for Optus stadium.

How the hell can this cost $1.8billion.

Why should taxpayers fund any stadium - should be users pay.

Itโ€™s morally wrong that Tassie doesnโ€™t have a team. I hope basketball takes everything they can get down there, for fronting up and giving them a team.

I have been complaining about this for years, just another team to draw players from the pool which gets lower by the day. So instead of having 5 teams that have no chance of playing finals mid year we will have 6 or 7. Add the player contracts which will see even more players trying to get out of the bottom half dozen teams. Essendrug is a view to the future for more teams.

Just look at the fiasco that is the VFL, as a feeder comp for the AFL it is poor. Numerous byeโ€™s that impact players returning from injury.A Player who get dropped because of form loss find oh there is no game this week in the reserves you will have to sit on your hands for a week.

To be fair restaurants, bars and hotels would benifit from a stadium as well as tourism as a whole so I donโ€™t think itโ€™s unfair that some of it is paid for by the taxpayer.

  • AFLW REPORT: Gold Coast

The forecast said wind. The ladder said mismatch. The scoreboard said obliteration. Melbourne didnโ€™t just beat Gold Coast โ€” they dismantled them: 13.15 (93) to 0.6 (6). An 87-point obliteration, the Suns held goalless, and the Demons delivering their second-highest winning margin and third-highest score in AFLW history.

It was a tough ask for him to break through as a 199cm ruckman in the shadow of an all-time great in that position who is also the club captain. He had some good days at Casey but was unable to progress and was delisted at the end of the season.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #29 Tom Campbell

The 33-year-old Campbell has yet to play AFL football for Melbourne, but his Casey form has been strong and he has been retained as a ready-made ruck depth option who is widely regarded as someone who is excellent for the culture of the club.

The Demons acquired an interesting player in Sharp, who narrowly missed securing a spot in the Lionsโ€™ premiership team last year. The 22-year-old medium forward played in the opening round this season and ended up with 18 senior games, although he was substituted in or out in for ten of those matches. He demonstrated glimpses of form, but ultimately ended the year on the margins of the team.

Worked his way back after a slow start and a further slump in form going into the midseason but became a solid contributor for the club in the latter half of 2025. Closing in on 300 goals for the club.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Gold Coast

On Friday, the Demons return to our Casey Fields fortress where they have a 77% win rate. The scent of September is in the air and the struggling Suns are on the horizon. The Cranbourne weather forecast? Ominous, like the match itself: a strong chance of carnage. Letโ€™s be honest, last weekโ€™s first half against the West Coast was a training drill but we dropped our guard in the final quarter. While this match is a mismatch on paper โ€” second versus seventeenth โ€” football is won in the wind, the contests, and the moments.
