May is 33, almost 34.

I am not sure how long people expected him to keep his pace and agility? Melksham and Tmac are significantly slower now, and Tmac is doing well because he's playing on big bodied slower forwards, whereas we are still expecting May to play on Elliot and Gunston.

Time to board the reality bus and understand that Gawn is a rare freak, but that most players as they age lose pace and reaction time. It's a bit harsh to hang him for it.

Now if culturally he is a problem, then that's a different story, but he's still a very solid one on one defender, and if he goes into next season playing on big bodied gorillas, rather than being asked to play on speedy medium forwards, then he will still provide a solid contribution.

Yep, culturally he may be a problem - maybe even a big problem. It's all speculation but if the new management feel that he's a fly in the ointment I'd be quite happy to see him go.

The real headscratcher is why we felt the need to give him a one year extension before he'd even played a game this year.

We are talking one more year with us, or traded for something.

Whatever!

If 🤔🤔🤔🤔

Big IF, makes you wonder why someone would jeopardize his entire career and money like that, being so young. Perhaps the young part explains everything.

I wouldn't read too much into this as the author of the story is as die hard a Bulldogs supporter as they come.

He's probably still reeling from seeing his team get monstered by the Freo attack and then thought of a defender that could potentially help them.

I think he’s good enough to go around for one more year but surely he’ll be heavily managed and no longer taking the oppo’s best forward. He may even not get a game at certain stages. He’s barely best 22 now and will go further south after a long summer on the track. That’s not a dig at him either, being 34 isn’t what it used to be but sixteen seasons as a key back is a pretty significant innings no matter how you look at it.

It staggers me that other clubs might be interested. He’s cooked.

Don't know what to do with May.

If I was confident that someone was ready for the key post down back then it would be a no brainer.

I am looking forward to seeing more games into Jed Adams. Wish we put more into him this year.

So the quote 'more than likely gone',

Who said that or is it completely made up?

Straight swap for ugle hagen we take all the risk in that trade but the upside could be huge if he can pull his head in

JUH is done. Bloke won't even turn up to training. Wouldn't be going anywhere near him.

The article is purely an opinion piece with a headline that isn't a quote from a source but just Scott's article. The HS have been doing more of this since Jay Clark has replaced Robbo.

I'd be happy for May to go. I'd actually rather a player than a pick though considering how deep their midfield bats.

Posted the exact same thing on the Melksham and McDonald thread. People don't read past the headlines at all, though I absolutely agree that the prominence of click-bait headlines on Hun articles is now starting to rival that of the Daily Mail.

For anyone still wondering, the “more than likely” gone quote is click bait. The actual quote from the article is:

While he’s contracted for 2026 at Melbourne, it’s more than likely he will be a victim of a list shake-up under the new incoming coach given there will be a thirst for change and May has enough crosses next to his name to be an easy cut.”

Just speculation from the journalist, Scott Gullan.

Thanks TU

So reporters just quote themselves now? lol

Reports coming in.... Dubdee thinks "this is BS reporting"

that is a direct quote

Is this yet more evidence that the whole club was full on "We're about to make the top four again, baby!"?

Sorry to be cynical, but this whole idea that Goodwin should feel hard done by because he was realistic about our chances of making finals while other decision-makers were over-optimistic fools doesn't ring true to me.

May’s decline has been more rapid than any of the other big names, he’s barely a shadow of his former self.

It’s refreshing to see that we are actively trying to instigate change.

It’s also pretty widely known that May has school links with Tom Morris, so perhaps we plug some leaks at the same time

So you saying he's a rat?

It does give us leverage in any trade negotiations.

I think there was definitely a good opportunity to see Jed out there. May and Lever both looked cooked for good portions of the year. Once the year was gone, we could easily have gotten Jed in for a game or two. Would also like to have seen Luker (although at the different end of the ground).

Realistically if the rumours are true and there are suitors for May and Lever, well you have to do the right thing by the club and explore the best possibilities for us.

Have been excellent servants of the club, became Premiership heroes and have completed what they have set out to achieve.

The time has come to regenerate our defensive set up, release some salary cap pressure and generate some draft currency.

Petty, Disco, McDonald, Derksen, Adams we will be ok down back, time to think forward now.

May is not worth anything at the trade table. He's a 3rd round pick at absolute best at his age. We would be moving him on so we could focus on bringing youth into the squad and the club that takes him would just be taking a punt on squeezing the last bit of footy out of his career.

Would be like when Hawks moved on Lewis and Mitchell.

Alternatively, why would you keep a guy that's turning 34 before the start of next season, yells at team mates, doesn't perform to the level anymore and has off field problems? Not sure what his salary is but its too much to have him yelling at blokes in the VFL

I agree with this

He points and yells when he is in the wrong too many times

I dare say the younger players can't stand him

I didn't think TMac would re-sign for 2026 (although I was hoping he would, because he has been good, often v good).

Maybe there is something to the May talk, and that has motivated TMac to hang around another year. I doubt we would give up Lever AND May - but if May were to leave, and knowing that Lever has not been able to stay on the park (fit) for sustained periods of late, we would need experience in the backline. Petty, Disco, Jed (?? - wish we had seen him) etc are good, but will benefit from guys like Tmac.

I would be happy with the players mentioned for our future

B - McVee, Petty, McDonald

HB - Turner, Derksen, Bowey

Steven May is a great guy, wears his heart on his sleeve, bloody passionate, loves a joke. I think he needs a very specific type of environment to thrive. Now that we're struggling maybe the club isn't right for both him and the team.

I love May. I'll be sad to see him go. I've joked with him a few times on Instagram, he responds to fans. But I've thought for a while that it's probably time.

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
