The question I have is why didn’t Goodwin try May at FF

Coz Goodwin in the last few years has had NFI!

Seems a few clubs are saying no & commentators are saying what clubs he shouldn't go to because of culture. Seems his name isn't great out there.

His behavioural issues will definitely scare a few clubs off

A coach could make or break a player let alone a team. May should have been tried as a forward , we had nothing to lose. With Goody in charge we was always going to be on a hiding to nowhere.

From the start I will admit I don’t watch the pies very often however the games I have watched recently I have the feeling Moore is overrated. He was poor IMO last night. Seems to play far too loose for my liking.

Hi OD

My comment re May playing with Moore was more about their relative reputations. I cannot see Moore accepting May's outbursts against any member of the backline

Because Moore's such a fine upstanding ( or down-kneeing ) bloke ?

The Filth have DeGoey... they'd adjust to May im sure.

We only tend to hear one side of that. What if his complaints are valid?

He may punch Maynard's lights out. Worth a shot.

I don't condone violence, but football acts will happen.

They have the oldest squad going around with a lot of there long term stars now ancient. The next couple of years could see them fall away.

the question probably is do they want to offer him 2yrs or would they prefer howe for 2 years. right now its hard to argue either of them will see '27 at which point is it worth it for 12 months?

So much so that he has been snapped up to give other coaches ideas! It’s sad when bias prevents good judgement!

In my opinion, you can see May is pretty close to the end. He’s more interested in playing golf than getting hid body fit, he’s lost a yard and the system that suited/covered his weaknesses is now not in play anymore.

He was an absolute champion for us, one of the main reasons we won that 2021 Flag and the way he played that GF with a 6-9cm tear in his hamstring shows just how tough he is.

He’ll forever be a Demon and deserves to be respected on the way out!

Not sure I agree with the bolded component, but the other points are extremely valid. I think this has been coming for a few seasons now, it shouldn't be too surprising. Sadly, I would've preferred that he chose to retire and ended his career with us, but I'm not begrudging of his desire to play on at all.

The benefit for us is that should allow Petty to move back to where he is suited, though I'm hoping that our three year failed 'experiment' hasn't stifled his development as a backman.

That's very harsh.

He's had a number of injuries this year that were accidental like the larynx and the concussion which would have taken a bit out of him.

I reckon Viney was never the same post concussion, nor was May.

If May missed a heap of games with soft tissue injuries you could argue your point, but his injuries this year were very much not preventable nor to do with fitness.

I do agree that he has lost quite a bit of speed and the end is fast approaching tho. No shame in that. Age catches up to most players.

May reminds me of Lazarus, on terms with Neitz for the amount of collision injuries he has sustained in his career (jaws for both) and the willingness and desire to keep putting the body on the line.

It's ok that careers come to an end, and its ok that people are contracted and their body starts slowing down (be it fast or slow) before the contract expiry.

I'll always admire the swagger and absolute dominance in the air when the ball came into the D50 in his pomp in 2021.

Despite having a modest year by his standards i thought he was quite solid most of the time, i am pretty surprised North Melbourne in particular wouldn't be all over a key defender who's a former club captain with premiership experience given where they're at, especially given he'd come so cheap in terms of trade and likely they could either spread his contract out or we might even agree to pay some of it.

Most especially since May has a great footy mind and could help coach some of their younger defenders.

North overpaid for bloody Caleb Daniels and Jack Darling but they don’t want May?

Crazy!

This is why I was surprised that I got shot down for suggesting we hold him to contract even if it means VFL plus some defensive mentoring / coaching. Perhaps he is more interested in playing.

If he doesn’t find a suitor he will be at the club next year

Melbourne’s decision to tell Steven May he is free to look elsewhere might look like standard list management: a 34-year-old defender with a year left on his contract, a new coach, and a club in transition.

But beneath the surface, this call is about more than age or cap space. It’s about culture, leadership, and the end of the protective bubble that once shielded the Demons’ 2021 heroes.

For all his credentials as a premiership defender, May was never the type to pull a group together. He barked, he scolded, he demanded, but he wasn’t widely seen as a unifying presence. At a time when Melbourne needs strong voices to redefine itself after four disappointing years, May was often a distraction rather than a leader.

Under Steven King, Melbourne are re-tooling their list and game style for a faster, more flexible defensive system. A high-maintenance veteran with one year left on his deal was never going to be part of that blueprint.

I suspect a suitor will be found. The club is making all the right, respectful noises, but behind all that it seems pretty clear that we want him gone.

A fair summary really.

  • AFLW REPORT: West Coast

Melbourne’s response to last week’s heartbreak was emphatic, as the Demons delivered a statement win over West Coast at a windswept Casey Fields. All of the pre-match hype surrounded the coach’s box matchup of Mick Stinear up against his apprentice, Daisy Pearce along with the gloomy weather forecast. In the end, it was less about tactical chess and more about Melbourne’s relentless execution. With rain looming, the DeeArmy and early birds snapped up the best undercover viewing spots.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: West Coast

Epic battle alert.  This Sunday, Casey Fields hosts a coach’s showdown pitting the wits of the master Mick Stinear (92 games, 71.7% win rate) against his protégé Daisy Pearce (16 games, 43.8%). Still early in her coaching journey, Daisy’s record doesn’t yet reflect her impact — but she’s already the best-performed coach at West Coast.Dais’ is mythic.  Like Katniss Everdeen, everyone either wants to kiss her, kill her (sporting metaphor) or be her.  Toothers Daisy Pearce is a role model, someone admired for their heart, humility and humour.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.
