I'd say it would be horses for courses depending on who we get and their experience.

For instance if Longmire does come, I'd wager he's picking his staff or at least has a very serious say in it.

Has a major, major say. The status of assistants would be a critical question before accepting the job..

To change immediately depends on their contracts and whether mfc can afford to pay them out (or pay the 6 month max per recent AFL rules) within the soft cap.

Also assistant coaches need to be told by end of August if they are going.

So room to make changes this off-season are limited.

Nonetheless, a new coach would be very keen for at least one change this year to get a preferred 2-I-C and make other changes next year.

I'm no greater mind, and I'm really just hypothesising here, but I would like to think the new coach coming in would have a big say in who his assistants are. Pretty sure Roos did when he first came in, for example.

In my opinion, an urgent coaching appointment/change needs to be around the fitness/strength and conditioning team. Two key - and often dismissed - ingredients to success are healthy lists and aerobically fit lists. In 2021 we ticked both boxes courtesy of Burgo (I miss that guy. And no surprises to see how well the Crows are going this year). After 2022-2023 I felt we were fit, but injured. 2024 neither boxes were ticked. And 2025 we seem to lack the fitness of other teams, but have had a good run with injuries. You can say injuries are good/bad luck, but I disagree. There's a reason Brisbane seem to always have great injury runs, and a reason why Essendon have just dumped their high performance coach.

I'm certainly not saying to get rid of Selwyn, but I'd be looking to see how (if at all) we can beef up and improve that department to optimise fitness and health. I'd love to see our new senior coach prioritise this side of football.

For the coach it’s a minor factor. For the players, much bigger.

It’s a huge problem, no doubt. The board will present the coach a vision of Caulfield in four or five years, which would be halfway through a successful term.

Not as big an issue for a coach. Almost an appealing proposition actually.

What a John Longmire buys you is the possibility to lose. If we go into next year and it's as bad as this one, you won’t see members microwaving their cards. That, more than anything, is probably why the powers that be will lean toward an experienced coach. If we do badly no-one will blame it on the coach and by association, the club and its directors. But if we do well (finals) everyone involved in shafting Goodwin comes out smelling like roses.

Bring in Longmire, and it’s a win-win for the board.

There's also a counterfactual to the above: if the board hadn't sacked Goodwin and we did badly next year, people would be calling for their heads for not acting. On the other hand, if we'd kept Goodwin and made finals in 2026, no-one would be praising the board for NOT sacking Goodwin. In other words, if they don't sack Goodwin they're on a hiding to nothing.

And THIS is exactly why there was no point waiting to sack Goodwin, because you don't want to hamstring a new coach with assistants he doesn't want, because of a missed deadline.

It's critically important to get someone on board ASAP, and if you get a feeling from your preferred candidates that they have assistants in mind lined up, then you cut ties with your current assistants as soon as possible. It's also the right thing to do by them, as it gives them more time to line up a job elsewhere.

Same goes for list management. Players will be having exit interviews in 3 weeks time. There's a distinct possibility we will have a new coach signed up by then, and they can be involved in those interviews, or at the very least players can be told who their new coach is, and that may be an important factor in their own decision making.

Our season is over on the field, but it's just starting off it. A really massive off season coming up.

Pretty much all of that was driven by a certain HS journalist and his sources and we all know who they are.

Now that they’ve got their main targets we’ll go back under the radar.

There will be some tough calls on veteran players but nothing an experienced assistant can’t handle if the club gets back to supporting a coach properly which we did for most of Goodwin’s time

Fantastic news for the club that Carlton continue to descend into irrelevance

Allows us to take our time and work on our targets to convince them than have to compete for them

Club will want this done before trade week and free agents etc

These ex-coaches who all have big egos. Remember Ross Lyon turned down the Blues because he had to go through a process! I feel like Horse and Simpson’s comments show they might be interested in the job, but they don’t want to embarrass themselves if they miss out. So they are deliberately sitting on the fence. What surprises me is how eager Buckley was and it leads me to think he may have been headhunted for the position. Why else would he be so interested on the public record?

Not that anyone cares but my personal preferences would be 1. Longmire, 2. Buckley 3. Untried assistant

Honestly if we got Horse and became a good H&A side who often choked in Grand Finals but still won one, then that would be fine by me and better than 100% of my life as a Demons fan previously (including the Goodwin era). Not as sold on Bucks but his reckon is pretty good and the aura he’d bring would be enormous.

Can’t be bothered fact checking his actual record over the years but….. I clearly remember learning to love to hate him when he defected from Brisbane to Collingwood because he wanted to play for a team that was going to win premierships.

Again, can’t be bothered fact checking how many Brisbane won not that long after he left but it was a few.

Also I do know that he never experienced wining a flag either as a player or as a coach. He had a pretty long football career.

Also certainly the Figjam persona was well deserved.

But if he ends up being our coach (I don’t want him to) I guess I’ll just have to learn to like him…..maybe.

If we end up with a flag of course I will then love him unconditionally.
