Maybe we tried to get players to add to the list that could make an instant impact. There are a lot of factors to consider.

We lost Jackson, Gus is the biggest loss of all, Hibbo retired, Joel Smith was finally coming good with his body and was pivotal late in 2023, Brown was a decent target and we got maximum out of him i feel. Then Nibbler headed home, it all happened so fast.

We lost leaders all over the field, can’t expect the younger ones to fill the void instantly. That takes time, I just don’t know which players we could’ve gone after to replace all of those.

It's clear we still have leaks within the club, likely at Board level. This isn't the only example only the most recent.

It will be for Doughty to work with the club on the details of the payout. It will be for the club to decide with the AFL if it can be staggered over several years under the soft cap, as Hawthorn’s was to Alastair Clarkson.

Doughty and Goodwin discussed what was next for him in the short, medium and longer term. They are, in order: holiday, probably media work next year, and hopefully a senior coaching job after that.

You're happy to wait another 57 years? Premierships are won each season, once the next season starts the last premiership is yesterday's news. It's always about the next flag and under Goodwin we were moving further away.

at the end of the day, he was in charge for a decade of seasons, if you include the 2016 year, when he was effectively coach in all but title

we made finals 4 times out of 10

ultimately, that's a failure

And only won finals in two of those seasons. The flag is the trump card of course but looking at the performance over the entire tenure it feels like an underachievement.

This puts a full stop on that connection and we are doing it ourselves. Historically that's been tragic for the MFC.

I hope to hell you're all proven correct in that Goody had to go, and that we nail his successor. If not this will set us back a decade again, and we'll be once again looking for a Messiah.

I know I'm in the minority, but I personally don't believe we were that far off, and a bounce next year was more than likely. I don't feel that now.

I think Goodwin expecting to do media work next season is perhaps the most delusional thing he's come out with all season. I will not miss his press conferences that's for sure.

I agree … so much arrogance from a supporter base who assume that with the team we had we should have won multiple premierships. Fact is this just doesn’t happen. It took us 7 years under Simon to win our first & we were effectively 4 years into our next challenge & I honestly felt we were a year or two away from challenging for our next . Not sure now ..

I'm not too fussed about the leak this morning. Lots of people blaming the club but everyone forgets that Morris leaked Hardwick's resignation which was way before the players found out. Brett Ratten's got leaked too in 2022.

I for one think in this case it was a player. The players had an emergency zoom meeting at 8:30 and then by 8:45 Morris broke the story. If Morris trusts that source he's probably going to air it pretty quickly. I know for a fact that the bulldogs leaks in 2021 and 2022 that angered Bevo (which led to the infamous Bevo/Morris stoush) was from a player that Morris played cricket with.

For me, today has been a bit of a sad day. I understand why they made the decision but I feel that Goodwin had started to turn things around. I honestly thought they'd give him some more time and see the other side of the transition. However, the growing issue with membership numbers, fan discontent etc was getting difficult to ignore

What worries me a bit is that Goodwin seems like he was the last man standing of the Roos/Jackson era that rebuilt the football club. I might be wrong but the link to that legacy feels gone now and I'm not actually sure this board knows that they're doing.

I think Garry Lyon summed it up best, where he said "You just hope this board is good and knows what they're doing". It's a defining day for the club. We'll either look back and day it was a masterstroke or a decision that has set us back and put us back amongst the Saints and Roos.

Very sad day to see a premiership coach depart in this manner, especially when he has been undermined by so many off-field issues.

But football coaching careers are similar to those of politicians. They almost invariably end in failure.

In Goodwin's case, at least we have one glorious season to remember.

I hope he finds success again in whatever role he takes up next.

Empty feeling & It’s rinse and repeat for our club, have witnessed this every decade since the 70s, we are so unstable with drama every decade & how we won a flag is amazing!

They all found a way to sabotage the club for continued success, the environment Goodwin had to coach in after P Jackson laid the stability foundations with Roos is very sad and will haunt the missed opportunities to win another flag during the 22-23 period!

Goodwin had issues no question but the constant off field dramas didn’t help with the instability of interim President & CEO, a hard sell will be needed to convince a Longmire, Simpson, Hinkley to want to coach with the only positive that the list is in decent shape.

When will this club ever be stable???

This is for me 100% our bigger issue, we haven't improved our list since we won the premiership, it's been the total opposite. The players we've lost vs players we've gained (draftees aside) has been a HUGE drop down in quality. And it's one of the reasons why I'm worried that Goody's sacking isn't going to address the deeper issues in list management, high performance/fitness, and our ranks of assistant coaches.

I have to wonder how hard it is to attract players to our club with Casey as one of our bases, and the other being a public park right next to a main road.
