Defensive forward is a reasonable sub, he got that tackle that could’ve saved the game with just a fraction more smart play from the other clowns.

Doesn’t matter who gets injured week in and week out we and most other clubs bring on a half forward.

Spargo looked flat when he first came on tho. I think he’s as checked out as most of the rest of them.

As flat as he looked against the Blues the week before? He was woeful and came in with zero form.

Billings, Bill & Woewodin weren't world beaters either but looked to be a mile ahead of Spargo.

That's solely on Goodwin. No coach worth his salt at this level would make such a stupid indefensible call. He also makes us slower as a team and that's saying something.

It's time to thank Simon for everything he has done and achieved, but cut our losses at the end of this season and commence the search (from here on).

You think that Simon comes out of his office on a Wednesday night and posts the team sheet up on the noticeboard?

Delusional.

The selection process is one that happens across the FD.

A loss like today's is multi-factorial, and not down to any single player or two.

I do believe though that across the field you need a good, balanced list, and one capable of executing what they need to. Without that you're on a hiding to nothing - as we saw today.

We were up by 46 points with one quarter to go. We had leaders across every line. We were playing the Saints. To lose in those circumstances was a complete failure from our coaches and senior players.

First Up: Vision reveals how the Saints did it in 'bonker...

Sarah Olle and Kane Cornes unpack the big issues from the round of footy

and the analysis on First Crack was even more damning. The Melbourne players didn't know what to do, and that's 100% on the coaching.

Goodwin just standing on the sidelines, saying nothing. None of the Melbourne players seem to know the rules. Wanganeen-Milera clearing the St. Kilda forwards out to the right, and he sprints off to the left, and marks. Viney 30m away, Bowey looking the other way, Max still in the circle - he should have been at CHB. Put Fritter, Melksham, Spargo (hah!) and Langford in the middle for the free, and put the best contested mark in the comp at CHB.

This failure is unforgivable.

And that's not even touching on the failure to make changes to arrest the momentum change.

Collingwood don't lose that game, and it's not just because of their list.

And don't kill the messenger; I can't stand King, or Cornes - but they are 100% correct here.

Time for change.

yea, First crack show the stupidity of our players and coaching, wtf was Viney doing, not standing on the corner of the square like theatre side.. Then why did Bowey turn around and not watch the ball. it like he was expecting a long kick and not a pass....
Total confusion. at the worst it wa 1:1 so how did their most damaging players not have anyone on hi,

This was 100% on the leaders and the coach.

As I posted earlier, he wasn't in t he game, he barely got a touch for a fresh player. Sharpe would have been so much more effective lots of run, speed and effort.

Sack them all then. All I see is a shifting of deck chairs at selection. The same soldiers playing their same roles providing the same level of input.

I’m not angered by this, I’m actually bored by it.

That last quarter is as bad as it gets!

Where does the responsibility lie when a team turns in a performance like that?

The buck stops with Simon Goodwin.

If it is fitness, then the buck stops with Goodwin. If the fitness team have allowed the players to present with sub par fitness then the buck stops with Goodwin.

If it is not fitness then it must be player motivation. To play like world beaters for 3 quarters and then switch off to the extent that they did has to be down to lack of motivation. What ever was said during the last break by the coaching team had the opposite to the desired effect. That is down to Goodwin.

I have been a supporter of Goodwin to continue but this is the big boulder that crushed the camels back.

The sooner he goes the better.

I would also ring changes to the player leadership. Max, as great as he has been as player and captain, could not have any effect on player attitude in the last quarter.

New coaching team and new on field leadership for 26.

It's the same reason we turn up and play like [censored] against Carlton, Essendon and other also rans. It's between the ears, despite what Goodwin banged on about a few years back they don't respect the game or the opposition. They think they are better than their opponents, think the game is won so mentally switch off. Same thing happened at 3/4 time today, thought the game was won and they could have an easy last quarter.

Then when things don't go their way they start panicking because they are low IQ footy players and aren't well drilled or don't trust the system. In 2021 we rarely panicked because we trusted the system now no one knows what hell anyone is meant to be doing. Bizarre considering there were 14 premiership players on the field today (Jackson, Hibberd, Brown, Harmes, Brayshaw, ANB, Jordon*, Lever and May missing)

Has Sharp had more than one full match so far? Have a feeling that was last week.

Most matches as sub.

There was nothing to lose playing him for a few more full matches to see what he could bring.

But nah, Simon's always going back to the same old Premiership well.

A stark contrast to that of Casey who appear to be extremely well drilled with most players appearing to know exactly what's being asked.

Kudos to Whitford and Co.

Emailing the club tomorrow to pause the renewal on my 5 memberships. Telling them I’m not renewing til we get some honesty from the club about what has gone so wrong and why, and see some change.

Every week we hear about learning and working to get better, how did we get so bad? We still have most of the flag team? What do they need to [censored] learn?

Am i correct in saying the only email available for members to vent is the membership one?

If so that never lands in the lap of anyone other than the front line membership staff.

You will just get an Auto response or a pre-fabbed template response from someone there.

The top brass will never even see your emails let alone respond.

The Premiership players are the main issue Gonzo

Apart from Gawn, none of them have been anywhere near their best since 2023

Slow, old, unmotivated, lazy, no hunger, weak at the contest, no edge, low skills, set in their ways, etc etc

In fact, since Gus was king hit out of the sport we've often looked quite timid

Frontrunners with poor fight back qualities. All getting paid well too. Amongst all that, a real lack of leadership qualities

We need a clean-out of sorts as previously stated on the rebuild thread back in March

By and large, I agree with your post

We lost round 1 because we couldn't close out the last 2 minutes.

What is the definition of stupidity ? Doing the same thing and expecting a different result.

If we aren't coached or can't learn or execute how to close out a game, then we will keep losing. Nothing changes and we go backwards with much embarrassment.

Or simply we just don't care.

"Senior on-field leadership has never been more paramount"

Ross Lyon post-match

(referring to AFL restrictions on sending messages out to players).

On the one hand Ouch! But on the other hand; Ross Lyon has been jealous that a club like ours and its leaders went all the way and broke their premiership drought (Unlike him, Hayes and Riewoldt) -

He tipped against us every week of the 2021 finals on Classified and never rated us throughout that time. And im sure is more than happy to now be sticking his boots into that same on-field leadership, now that we're back in the cellar.

Stick to what you know, underage football. By the way, I still stand by my original comments and they turned/turning out correct so keep being negative yourself.

Bruise free footy prove it, run and gun forward handball game by us followed by Saints trying to slow game down by possession game in 2nd meaning 0 contested stats.

4th quarter capitulation due to absolute brain fades by senior players of things which should be ingrained (that’s poor coaching), failure to slow oppo momentum with repeated stoppages playing possession football after turnover.

I stand by my opinion none of your points proved correct in the outcome, but I can guarantee you felt satisfied that you were right because we lost.

Delusional.

The selection process is one that happens across the FD.

You realise Goodwin sits in on that.. In fact he will preside OVER that. Thats how selection works. Questions will be asked and answered, suggestions made etc.. all roads lead to Rome. Goodwin is Caesar.

Just as Caesar made decisions so does Goidwin. Everyone else is there to serve. Input, ideas and so on.. Generals follow orders. Thats the nature of things.

Anyone who thinks a player plays, doesn't play , is selected, not selected without Simon's tick... you're kidding yourselves.

I have been trying to look for positives. Unlike the other cellar dwellers we are at least competitive. Obviously not competitive every quarter but not blown away whole of game uncompetitive like Bummers, Norf, Eagles. The Dees clearly need change but reckless change could see us sink further. The simplest change is the coach supporters need to see some action. In relation to the list it not that bad we just need to be careful not to butcher the playing list. Yesterday was bad/disgraceful but we still have some great players who we need to hang onto. When I am really down I am thankful Kossi resigned losing him would have been far worse than losing yesterday.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

The Dogs reigned supreme in 2018 with an inaugural AFLW premiership cup and the Demons matched this feat by winning the cup as the Season 7 2022 champions.Meggs wasn’t born when the Doggies won their first VFL premiership cup against the Demons in 1954. Covid prevented many Demons fans from legally witnessing the victorious 2021 AFL Grand Final cup performance between the Demons and the Bulldogs, but we all grin when remembering those magnificent seven third quarter goals.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
