It’s not you I quoted. It was part of Spirit of Norm Smiths post that I quoted.

Brisbane hasn't been the same without Daniher. Losing him has definitely messed with their structure. They aren't scoring much better than they were this time last year comparatively given they were 3-1-5 after 9 rounds. They have scored 100 more points but conceded about the same. They are definitely gettable. They also have the worst % of all top 8 teams.

I would dare say any team is gettable if only we were to play footy properly. That is do many of the basics, properly. Handball to advantage. Kick to advantage ( properly weighted and directed ) , play purposefully and timely, none of this kick around til the opposition can man up stuff. Be confident and have players running to ne a target, not bombing in blind hope. (p.s. kicking to a pack/contest should always be option Z )

Add to this the incredibly far fetched ideal of forwards knowing where to be and what to do and I know ,possibly a bridge too far, kick a [censored] goal.

Yes, any team is gettable. Brisbane is gettable.

But it won't be us..... get it πŸ˜‰

I agree with most of that DRev. I think JVR is at his peak. There is no more to his ability. Early days he took a few good marks but the competition woke quickly to that and now ensure he takes few of them. When the ball hits the ground he is poor. It appears his most useful ability is to play as a average second Ruckman.

Unfortunately I think you are right. There is probably opportunity for him to shine a little more if we had other forwards who could take pressure off, but unfortunately we have too many passengers, too often.

Re age... Weed says hello .

Point ..... age may not be the reason, talent ceiling might . Agree...it's currently at "might"

He seems to have gone backwards... that said there's quite a few caught in a rip going the wrong way.

I've been dead against dropping Fritta as it feels as though we're gifting the opposition by allowing them not to face a 50-60 goal a year forward (at his best) that can nail a devastating goal at any point of the forward arc.

However, Saturday was one poor game too many in what's been a really poor season. 4 touches, 1 mark and 2 regulation misses - one an absolute joke of a miss. He was a liability on the weekend, needs to go to Casey and probably needs a new club next year as his form slump is now 12 months old (barring a nice fortnight against West Coast and Essendon in July 2024)

In - Melksham, Petty, and one of Laurie or Sestan (to debut)

Out - Fritsch, Jefferson, Kolt

He has been and still is way ahead of Weed.

Yes, out of confidence and out of support. Do the oppositions even bother about Fritta these days?

As bad as Jeffo is at the minute the kid needs games.

Just play him till the end of the season.

Does it really matter if it means we lose 2 or 3 games less and end up with 7-9 wins compared to 9-11 wins.

I'd play him with Petty and Melk so at least we have one strong focal point in our attack.

Melk can negate Andrews types and Jeffo just keep learing your leading patterns and keep developing you competitives in and around the Fwd line.

We are not in premiership contention anymore.

There's certainly an argument for giving players a block of games without too much regard for the ladder.

He might suddenly click... he might not.

I do agree with OD in so much as I just dont see the inkling that he will. Disco has something ....this guy doesn't.

But that said chopping and changing ad hoc week out won't get us far.

A more deliberate planned rotation might unearth a player .... or not.

Not really going to matter much now for 25

The season for finals is over we need to find out what squad players we have in stock.

We know Disco has it we need to find out if Jeffo has it and other down at Casey.

We need to start planning for 2026 and beyond.

Fair call for sure.

We invested a high draft pick on Jeffo, so its fair to give him a block of games to see (a) whether he's up to it and (b) hopefully fast track his development with AFL rather than VFL experience.

It's just that he didn't show a thing on Saturday. Perhaps he might perform better with more experienced forwards such as Petty and Melk along side him this weekend.

(but he probably makes way and JVR retained)

My point re Weed was he was deemed as having potential when young ... but even with added years just didn't cut the mustard. Not all players do. Jeffo.. young , been in the system a number of years now and really hasn't taken the next step and possibly never will ( a la Weed )

Jeffo , for mine, and please there's no personal slight intended, this is just football related observations, is in that category of players who are too good really to play VFL but just not there either for AFL. 2nd tier role players can be sort of carried in a well performing team.

He is neither in a 2nd tier role and we are far from a well performing team.

That's my point in this regard.

Bbp he had a poor last half of last season. He is now in double territory for poor games. Sadly there is no one to take his place.

I suspect none of that will happen. Goodwin is coaching for his survival. He will be using whichever players have the better chance of giving us a win. Giving players blocks of games to see if they will improve is not going to happen

I must confess it took me three reads... but you nailed it

Except for the parts where

Freo played a totally different game style to GWS

Slow switch maintain possession as opposed to taking grass and speed on the ball off half back and good players by foot getting the ball in quicker favouring forwards.

So it’s not so much Hogan playing a different style it’s the teams he was in who played completely different styles

Jefferson does not 'deserve' games. Just because he was a high investment, ou can't simply gift him games. What message does that send? Sure, a case could be mounted for getting games into him before season's end, in the hope it exposes him to AFL standard, but right now, the bloke actually offers ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Once Lever and Petty are back, there is no way you can justify giving him a game ahead of Turner (forward) and Petty. He cannot be a 3rd tall, as he doesn't compete...wouldn't even bother sending a tall defender to him...so useless as a foil also.

I'd much prefer AJ, who can ruck, and also shows plenty of competitiveness. I recognise that he has not been in great form at Casey, but he competes. Much like Cam Pederson did. Sometimes that's all you need. The first half on Saturday we basically played a man down.

I would swap JVR, Fritz and Clarrie for Hogan.

An interesting Statt. We have not won a games with either Or both of Jefferson and JVR in the team. I think they both mess up fthe forward structure.

I wouldn't mind seeing Laurie come in to put a hard tag on Neale - play the Viney role.

I think he's had his papers stamped though.

Are you actually comparing jvr to Weid at the same point in their career? Jvr is miles in front

Not directly.. comparing their development in terms of progress.

Weed didn't develop much past where he got to in 3 seasons..

Roo has stagnated in a similar manner

My point , or contention is has Roo already met his ceiling... as Weed did ?

Hogan was the one we missed but who knows if he we had picked him up from Freo that he would become this. We don’t know what his relationship was with players before he left some time ago.

So Viney misses 2 games and Bo Allen gets the 1 week. No revised penalty … seems fair.

Not helped by the revolving door of other forwards - not particularly anyone's fault either (injuries to Jeffo and Petty, suspension to Johnson etc.)

If we could have a settled forward line for a month with either Turner or Petty alongside JVR, we might all be able to see where this is heading.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Having convincingly defeated last year’s premier and decisively outplayed the runner-up with 8.2 in the final quarter, nothing epitomized the Melbourne Football Club’s performance more than its 1.12 final half, particularly the eight consecutive behinds in the last term, against a struggling St Kilda team in the midst of a dismal losing streak.Β Just when stability and consistency were anticipated within the Demon ranks, they delivered a quintessential performance marked by instability and ill-conceived decisions, with the most striking aspect being their inaccuracy in kicking for goal, which suggested a lack of preparation (instead of sleeping in their hotel in Alice, were they having a night on the turps) rather than a well-rested team. Let’s face it - this kicking disease that makes them look like raw amateurs is becoming a millstone around the team’s neck.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.Β
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards?Β Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?Β
