I’m sorry that I haven’t had time to read the previous 10 pages but by the time we got home last night and rewatched the 3rd qtr it was after midnight and we were up at 5.00AM to attend the Dawn Service in Doreen where our grandson ( one of several school leaders) read out the names of WW1 returned and KIA soldiers, very moving and a great Service.

We got to the game early so we could soak up the atmosphere and not miss anything and what a stunning and moving night it was. Pre-game entertainment, the tribute to our ANZAC’s, the two WW1 Horsemen with the torch, the Eternal Flame lit by a heroic Veteran, the Last Post, followed by the NZ and Australian Anthems was brilliant.

The game was fast and furious we were so dominant but didn’t nail the Tiges until the premiership quarter where we totally dominated them, we maintained a great lead until well into the last quarter when we finally took our foot off the gas and allowed them some face saving goals. Max won the Checker Hughes Medal we got to sing Our Song several times, love the beat of the drum and chanting of our Demon Army. Crowd noise for both sides was quite deafening at times and we loved the size and deference of both supporter groups But love beating the Tiges at the G on ANZAC Eve.👍😁

It seems that people think there is a direct correlation between resting Max in the last and our fade out. Simple explanations are great but it's rarely that way. We aren't in a franchise sport where we rested Steph Curry for the last quarter, we have 17 others on the field most of which are also premiership players.

We have also bombed in every last quarter this year and I still don't think there is enough attention on the fitness side of things. You heard Holmes and Draper after the Cats and Dons games saying how they know if they run around with the ball on the outside that's the way to beat us, it's a dead giveaway right there. I saw Christian Salem, easily in our top 4 players on the night, attempt a 25m backwards 50 chip and scrubbed it about 10 leading to that late goal by Taranto or whoever. There were at least 2 or 3 instances like this in the last 5 mins that lead me to believe that fatigue and barely being able to run out the game is a problem for us. Yes I know we were coming off a 5 day break but as mentioned this has been the case in all games this season.

I very much hope resting Gawn pays dividends. But we need more than 1 quarter of good footy. There aren't any finals sides that flick the switch when they want to.

Gawn is a different beast, Stynes was a great, White was so athletic and if the rules didn’t get changed would have dominated for longer, but Gawn is next level.

Watched the casey game and whilst JVR kicked 5 and Johnson kicked 3 (he should have had at least 7), Johnson was the more impactful player. He led to the ball and was quick off the mark. JVR still wants to wrestle and slow to react.

Fritsch had a pretty decent gap between the defender behind him and the fact it would have suited his left side as well was why I thought it was a strange decision. They are the perfect lead up targets we've been screaming for.

Interestingly I thought Goodwin was a bit guarded in his response to Fritta in his press conference. It's pretty evident that simply kicking goals isn't the only thing that will keep him in the side.

Someone mentioned before the 0 tackles and 4 pressure acts. Think I heard May and Bowey get interviewedafter the game and they emphasised that pre game the biggest thing coming into last night's game was that our pressure had to be right up it certainly showed from a team perspective, but unfortunately for Fritsch, his lack of pressure is pretty concerning.

I didn't see much of Fritta without the ball in this one Daz.

In a team where we're trying to bring back 2021 type pressure in the F50 is Fritta going to change his early / recent ways in terms of clamping down and bringing serious heat on the oppo when they have possession ?

Pressure Acts 4 That's one less than Fullo and the worst result of all forwards. Also bottom three for the team. To put that into more perspective, Sharp as the sub had the same number of pressure acts in one third of the time on the ground vs Fritta.

While i'm certainly not saying Fritta should solely be judged on what he does / doesn't do without the ball, these numbers aren't exactly awe inspiring.

Also disappointing given he was coming back from a stint at Casey after potentially working on stuff (without the ball?).

There is also his role in the team which we have no idea what is being asked. Maybe the Coach / coaches are more than happy and obviously have much more info / intel to go on. However i can't see that they'd be in any way satisfied with what he brought without the ball last night.

Let's see what he brings in the next few weeks eh. Hopefully he turns this part of his game around significantly.

He needs a dedicated key forward coach, he has the tools it is up to us to help him develop them into a consistent key forward.

My observations from the game:

• Bowey is in excellent form. AA? Just looks so good and confident with the ball.

• Besides Bowey, a number of others stepped up.

  • Max, back to his best

  • Langdon in everything eveywhere

  • Someone must have woken Oliver up at halftime as his second half, third quarter in particular, was very good.

  • Salem had his best game so far this season.

• Tight first half due mainly to our handling errors and good pressure from Richmond at times.

• Smaller defenders, Bowey, McVee, Windsor, Salem and Rivers looked very good as a running unit and will only get better with more games together under their belt.

• Viney another good run with game.

• Coaching team had another good day with tactics including putting a couple of weapons in the rack late in the 4th.

• 1st year players, Langford and Lindsay both look settled and as if they belong.

• Forward 50 still very much a work in progress.

It all felt pretty much in control, even during the first half.

After the game, a good lunch and a couple of glasses of wine. I am half the world away.
