I'm sure this will get asked repeatedly over the next week. Do we keep tinkering with the forward line or leave it for a week?

Only saw patches of the VFL and it seemed more of the same from Roo and Fritsch, definitely didn't light the world on fire but in saying that GWS were also very good.

Seperate issue but how do you feel about Culley? Wins the ball and is very hard at it but seemed like another butcher in his disposal and I feel we already have a few of them. Do you think he will break into the side?

needs a game or two more at casey for fitness i say

Smashed uncontested possessions this week 252 to 204. I think it set the tone from the start that we were willing to work.

But why is it that when we've been beaten in this area this year that we look so poor? What is it about kick-marking against Melbourne that makes us easy to play against? I hope to see us at least break even in this stat for weeks to come.

Can we have a discussion re what Ed Langdon is giving us this year?

I feel when he came to the club we saw him as a "bit player" with the running capacity his one wood.

This year, I feel like he is one of a few who've provided a consistent contribution, and we're seeing him evolve into a leadership role that was probably not expected.

Finally won the tackle count! Effort, effort, effort.

And it's amazing what message is sent to the rest of the group when big name players are dropped. Go Dees!

I’d be interested in your thoughts on the game plan. We looked so dynamic today, full of run and dash off half back, and playing on from a mark often. How can we look so utterly different from previous weeks? Is it confidence or the team starting to gel? Is this our actual game plan?!

100 point turn around since last time!

This was a game where the effort was going to tell the tale. Were they prepared to play for the coach and each other? We saw this with heaps of team first actions.

A nice day out, but how long will it last? Is this the enlightenment and renaissance, or just a blip on the radar?

Anyone know why Clarry is still throwing up at quarter time breaks? I saw this happening at pretty much every game last year, often as he was walking back to position at quarter time which I thought was simply due to him being underdone with no preseason. But I saw Clarrie again today on the outside of the quarter time huddle throwing up most of the drink he had in his hand and looking a tad uncomfortable. Just curious if anyone had seen this prior to 2024 or with other athletes as a regular occurrence and potential reasoning. He doesn't seem overly phased and just walks back into the centre square for the next quarter. But it can't be good for his hydration/energy losing that much fluid/electrolytes every game. Could be meds or something other health related of course and understand we don't talk about those here.

Just asking out of care for the fella as its always a concern when you see someone being sick on the ground. Hope he's OK.

is petracca the best player to be such an appalling kick of the football?

he is a fantastic footballer but my goodness his use of the ball by foot is hideous; so many blind kicks to no one - i've long called dangerfield 'clangerfilled' but trac makes him look like nick daicos

A great win by the Demons.

The pressure should be temporarily alleviated from Simon Goodwin.

Kozzy Pickett was definitely the match winner.

My question is....how good is Harvey "The Bison" Langford?!

Glad that he, Xavier Lindsay, Harry Sharp and Tom Fullarton all got to finally taste their first victory for the Demons!

I was a little worried when i saw him walking and sheepdogging a couple of contests. Was wondering if it was part of his role of a little bit lazy?? I couldn’t tell, to be honest….

We have come off 5 weeks of looking tired, showing low pressure and not running out games to suddenly playing high pressure and running on top of the ground. Max said at the end of the game they thought they were one of the fitter sides going around (paraphrasing). Is there any chance we looked at Brisbane losing their first 4 games last year before going on to win the flag and have decided that's the approach and so have loaded the first month of the season to give them a fitness edge into the business end of the season ? Seems a ballsy strategy but might have merits. (Apologies for using the L word but what can else can explain this crazy turn around in form?)

Looking forward to a far more positive podcast this week. It must have been hard for you to front up after the start to the season we had, especially the Bomber debacle. Your passion last week was obvious, and shared.

Illness kept me away today so I only watched on Kayo - I got the impression that there were far more low kicks into 50 than previously and way less bombing it long. And our guys seemed to lock it in far more. Is this a change of “game plan” or just pot luck? Can we keep this up?

GO DEES.

Andy’s rant last week should not be underestimated in getting the Dees up and about. Love the passion fellas

well we all lost our collective faith, heads etc but fortunately those inside the football club didn't lose theirs, the one person I felt more for with this win was Goody he has copped it fair and square from every direction, myself included surely we can see that he still knows what he's doing and just give him some support, keep up the good work boys we love you all 😉

Andy, your well-timed spray during last week's podcast, fire and brimstone that would have made Barrass proud, clearly had the desired effect.

Well done!

The value of Langdon this year gas multiplied in importance. His run is now exactly what the modern game needs. Which I think is why they tried him in a few centre stoppages.

Finally as much spirit on the field as there has been in my glass trying to watch the previous 5 rds!

Question changes wise.

If Turner doesn’t get up due to concussion, do we persist with a smaller backline? Or does Adams come in as well as McVee? Which would definitely release Rivers into the midfield.

That game style is a boon for Fritsch. Quick ball movement to an open forward half. Do we bring him straight back in even though he was underwhelming at Casey?

Where to for Petty? 3 goals and a gift to Koz in the square, is exactly what we have needed, it'd be a brave man to move him back this week.

With a full contract payout there's little to no chance Goodwin is moved on. It's kind of nice realising the turmoil that that likely saves us. He just might prove most of us wrong, I for one would be more than happy with that.

Thanks for the pod.

I'd like to raise some constructive feedback for the club that is a lot easier to solve than forward connection, the search for a new CEO or a permanent training base.

It's the over the top pre-game audio at MCG home games that is dressed up as 'match-day experience' but only serves to detract from the experience itself.

I love concerts and live music, but when I go to the footy, it would be nice to be able to hear the person next to me, rather than having music blaring and the match-day hosts screaming over the top of each other.

I get that this is meant to create energy, but the real energy isn't the manufactured stuff. It's what happened in the last quarter on Saturday when 25,000 passionate Demon fans turned up their own volume and cheered their team to victory.

I heard a rumour that the Dees heard Andy’s rant and that set the wheels in motion. The [censored] bombs were delivered out of disappointment and hurt and passion for change.

What a game? Extend the podcast to 2 hours this week.

  1. The excitement. The goals. Wow. Riv, Trac, Chin, Viney and of course Kozzzzy. Excitement. We come to the footy for excitement. Wow they delivered. We love kozzzzzy. The kids all jumped for joy for kozzzzys mark !!

  2. The game plan. It was a more dynamic style today. Not perfect but better. More run and dash off half back, and playing on from a mark often. No boring sideways useless sideways boring useless kicks. Guess what? It works. Play on and overlap running and kicking puts defenders under pressure. Simple stuff. Don’t wait for the defence to zone and flood back. Yes 2 + 2 = 4. Simple footy.

  3. Pressure count. Yes over 200 consistently. Not the pathetic 135 from last week. The tackling. Better. More contested footy.

Still too many MISSED tackles or where Freo got the handball away. Work to do but better.

  4. Max and JV7. The leaders stood up. Viney was huge all day. Tagging and running and his kicking was 1000% better. Boy what a difference.

  5. Jake Bowey. Cool and efficient. Good decisions. Get it to him and get him to kick it. With McVee back, we have a good running defence. (Salem was ok but on notice)

  6. Petty up forward. Great game. Yes showed his marking and goalkicking. Needs more support but played a great game.

Sorry … still have to call out … as George does…” stop guarding grass”. Clarry was caught out twice in defense and with two other clangers, he was poor defensively. Clarrys heart was all in (100% endeavour) but needs to think more.

Key stats.

16 goals. 56 entries. 28% efficiency. Fast ball movement created opportunities. Needs still to be better. Missed 6-7 goal chances that needed ti be kicked. Gawn. Trac. Sparrow. Spargo. Missed sitters.

Clearances 38-33. Last 2 games, Freo destroyed us at clearances. Our mids stood up

59 tackles. 27 in forward50. The pressure was huge as we locked it in. A little reminder to us of 2021.

Bounces 7. Not often covered. We typically have 1-2. This showed our run.

A great win 👏👏👏

Go Dees ❤️💙

Amazing

Watching on the screen in the pub.

It looked like Windsor played on the wing or at least further up the ground. Was this a consequence of Bowey playing so well? Also was Riv playing deeper IE off the flank and not in the centre. Was this a consequence of Viney tagging in the centre?

What a good win against a side that has always bothered us and were considered a contender.

Hope this is the beginning of the return. WE still have a great list and I hope that we select based n opposition strengths. Be confident to reward performance.

Agree completely except I didn’t bag Goody

Another question....

How good were both Max Gawn and Kozzy Pickett yesterday?!

Kozzy Pickett reminded me of a prime Jeff "The Wizard" Farmer yesterday with the way he played and impacted the game against Freo.

“Max Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

  • CASEY: Southport

The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.

Just a game and percentage outside the Top 8, the Demons return to Melbourne to face the Sydney Swans at the MCG, with a golden opportunity to build on the momentum from toppling the reigning premiers on their own turf. Who comes in, and who makes way?
