    It's literally the opposite.

    Everywhere you look, on TV, radio, in print, commentators are constantly talking about how everyone thought we were a finals contender and now it's become clear we're the opposite. The 5-14 run, Trac's body language, Gawn's words last week, Goodwin's pressers and coaching, the Oliver/Viney/Trac midfield conundrum, Rivers going backwards, it's all they're talking about.

    We are constantly analysed.

    North Melbourne will be criticised today for being flogged again, and the media will move on.

    The thing that gets me about this though, is that with Neeld he was powerless to stop it. Whereas on Friday, Goodwin literally chose to deploy a tactic that ruined us. He could have stopped it at any time, but didn't.

    I didn't think we would be heading back to mark Neeld territory so quickly.

    Goody's tactics look amateurish. There has to be significant improvement over the next 3-4 games otherwise it will be terminal for him.

    This comes back to the coach not communicating properly so that the players understand wtf they are meant to be doing.

    Very little forward creativity, it seems very little trained flexibility; our forwards cannot perform without space, our forwards mainly expect and receive low percentage long bombs from the midfielders. The pillar of salt mantra from behind a defending pack of opposition players just ain't gonna work. Few Demon forwards can now expect to kick three or more goals per game. The midfield kicks that are incoming are useless, half-forwards and rovers are ignored 90% of the time. It is past time for these footballers to be better coached, better systemised, better equipped.

    Honestly if we use Sparrow to tag Merrett and play with one less forward, Goodwin can just stay in Adelaide. I'm still in shock of how dumb that move was on Holmes. He needs to put his hand up and take responsibility of that terrible coaching performance rather than try and shift blame onto the players.

Every coach this season has set their team up with a plan to beat us and they've often adapted and improved it during the game. We're not seeing that and it's not his nature.

    Seeing is believing. As a matter of fact, here are Melbourne's last quarter goals for the first 4 rounds this year ... v GWS (1), v North Melbourne (1), v Gold Coast (2), v Geelong (0). That's a total of 4 goals in 4 final quarters. In contrast, Melbourne's opponents recorded a total of 21 goals. That's 21 to 4. That statistic puts some perspective on just how poor Melbourne are so far after only 4 rounds. Add to that a low scoring first quarter against Geelong registering a total of 8 points followed by a total game tally of 46 points and it's very clear that Melbourne FC (which has been going backwards for the last year or so) continues to go backwards, only at a much faster rate. There's no papering over the cracks now.

    The most frustrating thing is we played the game not to get belted, not to win but not to lose by too much. There's only one way to play when you have our list and that is to win. Give the players some licence to play on, to kick into the corridor to run. We have nothing to lose and if you want to learn to transition fast then set your defence and go for it. We're better off turning it over going for it than bombing it down the line and turning it over. So frustrating.

    Closest thing I have read on here to my thoughts. We are so uninspired and the senior players seem inert and incapable of inspiring any attention of the younger players to a display a consistent commitment to how Goodwin and Chaplin wants them to play.

    Who’s fault it is immaterial - this is leading in only one direction…

    And the fitness aspect (last qtrs) is just maddening and a shock. We should be one of the fitter sides after last year.

    I don’t think it’s fitness as much as the way we are playing. It’s deflating, playing a slightly different way every week is not helping

    Fitness seems a clear part of it to me. There's always a mental side to fitness but to my eye we don't seem to be capable of running and spreading to the required level, and it manifests late in quarters and late in matches.

    I’m not convinced we know where to run and spread to. I’d release the shackles. Just play on, set your defence and then handball or kick forward at all costs. Everytime we start chipping it around the back half we just give the opposition time to set.

    Possibly but by all accounts of the preseason we should be fit.

      The Gold Coast Suns find themselves outside of the top eight for the first time since Round 1 with pressure is mounting on the entire organisation. Their coach Damien Hardwick expressed his frustration at his team’s condition last week by making a middle-finger gesture on television that earned him a fine for his troubles. He showed his desperation by claiming that Fox should pick up the tab.  There’s little doubt the Suns have shown improvement in 2025, and their position on the ladder is influenced to some extent by having played fewer games than their rivals for a playoff role at the end of the season, courtesy of the disruption caused by Cyclone Alfred in March.  However, they are following the same trajectory that hindered the club in past years whenever they appeared to be nearing their potential. As a consequence, that Hardwick gesture should be considered as more than a mere behavioral lapse. It’s a distress signal that does not bode well for the Queenslanders. While the Suns are eager to remain in contention with the top eight, Melbourne faces its own crisis, which is similarly deep-seated but in a much different way. After recovering from a disappointing start to the season and nearing a return to respectability among its peer clubs, the Demons have experienced a decline in status, driven by the fact that while their form has been reasonable (see their performance against the ladder leader in the Kings Birthday match), their conversion in front of goal is poor enough to rank last in the competition. Furthermore, their opponents find them exceptionally easy to score against. As a result, they have effectively eliminated themselves from the finals race and are again positioned to finish in the bottom half of the ladder.

    • REPORT: Port Adelaide

      Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

    • CASEY: Essendon

      Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
