The motive to ship out isn’t their role as contest winning midfielders - it’s culture. Fit in or [censored] off… I wrote an article today on the difference between high performing cultures and high performing environments. SK is working on one pillar first.

Link to article, EO? (Or PM to me?) Have been thinking about this topic recently re my current workplace

Not a great day for the club once again! Understanding change is needed but to see our premiership players going off at the airport and door stopping our new coach to discuss list mgt looks amatuerish! You don’t see this at the cats, pies, hawks etc, will

This club ever learn? I’m very sceptical on this process and concern on who will be running out in the team In 26, hearing King say finals is what we aspire yet both our best mids are on the market just dosent add up! Oliver has had manny issues and perhaps at the centre of all the culture issue Trac was raising but the way it’s been handled seems so wrong

you would hope to think that they have a very good idea at what we have coming in.

Oh yeah so when Bailey Smith abuses a female photographer at an OPEN TRAINING SESSION, there is nothing to see here.

But when Mitch Cleary that [censored] nuffy follows Clarry around harassing him in his time off, chasing him like a [censored], and is told to F off, then that is the problem. Because if you went to the airport and had someone chasing you with a microphone, who has spent all day writing poorly about you, you wouldn't do the same.

3 years of relentless harassment and abuse of Clarry, versus the kid glove handling of JUH, Smith and so on.

Give me a break, and most importantly give him a break.

Player managers are the main culprits with leaking.

I’ve had some small insight into the world of player managers this year and what you said sounds right to me and consistent with their symbiotic approach to journalists (and I use that term loosely)

Yikes! We may just have to pay another $300,000 of his contract and accept a third rounder after that

Tbh I thought nothing of it. Didn’t handle it well but he’s clearly been hassled the entire walk that they didn’t show, just shows him saying “f off” repeatedly.

Media should give these blokes some room but they never do.

Yes, that's what people are missing here. Petracca, Oliver and Viney just can't kick.

They can kick, but they need to take the time to find a target and that should be within 25 m most times. That should have been a team rule with consequences for not doing it.

In 2024 I made a habit of watching our replays and freeze framing it when one of these 3 had the ball and running forward, time and time again they booted long burning teammates 20m forward and running in the corridor. They can all kick accurately over 25m.

The problem has been in my mind that Goodwin tolerated, if not encouraged the blind hack kick forward from this trio for the last 2 seasons.

I would hope so, seems like a circus like we’re throwing out the baby with the bath water, Oliver has been a knuckle head no doubt, the list managers who signed him & others to long huge contracts are still at the club making these new decisions! Were is their accountability ???

Not to mention Bailey Smiths blatant homophobic mad Monday costume, that received no punishment, yet Rankine got 4 weeks for 1 word.

Fair call. I just hope it doesn't scare off clubs who may be worried about the effect he'll have on culture considering his behaviour and attitude are already questionable

Where did JVR say that. I’ve definitely read/heard a couple of times that he loved playing in the ruck 🧐

I swear I read or heard it in an interview that he doesn’t like it… I could be wrong but I’ll pretend I never am Season 3 Laughing GIF by The Simpsons

Totally get your point and hope so too.

Hopefully they’re smart enough to see that the media play everything up.

This provides new context for Clarry's Insta story earlier

Seems now he was having a go at Mitch, not joking around with him

I wonder if this is because the story has a bit of mayo on it, and he's fine with the role change, or the story is bang on about him getting heated at the meeting with King

Definitely something off about the whole situation

Yeah. The same journos that banged on about respecting Clarries mental health not so long ago.

Scumbags.

I swear I've seen this thread 12 months ago.

Might tap out for a while.

Hope Clayton is ok and hope he stays.

You might’ve heard it from me. I told JvR that some folks were saying we should maybe play him in defence and others are saying nah leave him forward but not rucking. He said he’s happy to play either position and as for rucking he said he doesn’t mind it especially now that “it turns out I’m pretty good at it.” He certainly doesn’t hate it.

I agree. Completely. But Collingwood didn't cover themselves in glory when they did similar to Grundy and Treloar. That is the most striking similarity. Let's hope King can coach as well as McRae. And if he can, we'll be able to attract players.

You look at the Pies & really where’s their AGraders. Arguably they traded away Grundy & Treloar who were close to that. What they do have is a team that plays unwaveringly for the jumper. They’re lead by some exceptional leaders & they never give up. We have maybe got rid of some players who don’t put the club first . If you have a club that is fully committed and on the same page maybe we will be better. We def still have a lot of quality. We can judge these decisions in time & I’m going to support the coach who’s Footy IQ blew everyone off the park

Clarry's challenge is reach the brutal running levels required of an AFL mid. Possible Dees don't think he can check that box at the level required.

My read on it as well. I suspect that the fitness team have come to the conclusion that for whatever reason, Oliver can't get back up to required fitness levels and in particular, get his speed up to where it needs to be.

So either he needs to play a different, less-demanding role, or be moved on.

(There may be other factors as well, of course.)

Typical of these threads. None of us have any idea why he has gone ot Sydney. Did GWS tell him if you ever want to leave MFC, just hop on a plane immediately - maybe check if we are available. Or did Oliver fly up hoping to sell himself with no notice? Both seem unlikley - so reading anything into it is a stretch.

Oliver's trip to Sydney was a planned holiday, according to Jake Niall @ the Age. Despite the headline-grabbing 'Oliver jets to Sydney after star midfileder told to seek new club,' they then state in the article it was a planned trip.

Yeah, it's possible we reset like Collingwood did, but McRae had the best player in the competition land in his lap for free. King won't have that.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
