Blake Howes reminds me of John Cleese in Fawlty Towers

I hope he doesn't march like Basil Fawlty.

Maybe he should lose the stache!

Seriously he's due for a good game and the pressure is on. I'll back him in to do his best game

Gcs by3 goals with lever out and a poor forward line I cannot see us winning this game. Too many NQR,s

God that was enjoyable. Miserable hawks fans leaving at 3/4 time!

I went with a Hawks supporter. He said to me that he'd never seen a team try so hard and yet be so bad. I remember thinking the same thing and seeing how hard the Hawks players were running to space. They just got beat at every contest. Three months later and they were playing finals.

I suspect that except for Richmond, Melbourne is the most inaccurate field kicking team.

I hope Im proved wrong tomorrow.

With that kicking action he should be a revelation up forward. By the way which way are the goal posts?

Actually feel slightly more confident about this week than I did about last week for some unknown reason (was concerned about North at Marvel). Even with Lever out I think we will give a good account similar to v GWS: whether we can win though, no idea.

Last week I heard the commentators say our mids kicked it to No-one-in-Particular. I just checked the teams. He isn’t playing this week, so we’re a chance.

Agree with this.

Even though we went in favourites against North, something just didn’t feel right about that game - as you said it was probably the Marvel factor.

We unequivocally play the MCG far better than Marvel, we have the wood over Gold Coast, GC are far less trustworthy than GWS whom we almost beat, and there’s also the “bounce back” effect” for clubs that have copped it from the media and fans.

I still think it’s a tall order to win tomorrow.

I agree with all the posters who recon Melkshake, JVR, Billings, Howes, Langford, AJ and Sharp should be in the mcgoos. Lucky we've got Doull, Carey, Ablett, Bartel, Dempsey, Goodes and Louis Gawn ready and fit to come in to take their place.

Small 'feeder' responsibilities from the bench, one hopes.

Needs to be someone there to kick to. As @jnrmac has posted this week, our running patterns leave a lot to be desired

That is the desired mission; Salem does need targets to play at his best and it seems more than apparent that our forward line and corridors lack that imperative to receive unhindered.

Yes he played well in round 1 as a defender and I said I'd consider (not demand) him as a forward tomorrow seeing as though T Mac is in the side as defensive cover and you're not going to have a defence of May/Lever/Petty/T Mac.

If T Mac wasn't in the side then I wouldn't consider Petty as a forward.

JVR hasn't hit the scoreboard in any meaningful way in 8 of the last 9 games. As our nominal number 1 key forward I expect more output.

EDIT - Lever is out, so clearly Petty won't be forward.

JVR MUST go for the trot to space - every midfield entry!

Laughable that Howes gets another chance. His confidence is shot and he needs a stint at Casey. Frankly anybody on the list would be better at this point.

Note that statistically Howes was our 11-12th best player on Sunday.!!

Given what the teams has produced over the last two weeks it is hard to feel very confident in making a prediction on the result of this game. I always try to go with the head and try to give an educated opinion. However, this week it is all with the heart and hope.

Dees will produce a response to the inept game they presented last week and get over the line by a couple of goals or points. No idea how they will do it but the heart is confident.

I look at the talent and experience we have in the team and I cannot see us not responding.

May to give the backs some backbone and structure, Midfield to lift and AJ to rip into it in the forwards.

All good. Go Dees!

Can’t wait for McVee to be back

Thinking about that shambles last week really made me think how fundamental McVee has made himself to the back six, while he’s not Stewart for the cats, he’s pretty instrumental in clutch moments saving our bacon. While it was our worst defensive effort in 10 years I would say it was the most unsettled back 6 in 10 as well. I also felt like Petty got sucked up the ground a bit and that he and Lever need to work on the connection that Lever may have.

Essendon and Carlton have both brought high pressure into their games after their week of scrutiny. Hopefully we can do the same and it will serve us well.

May in, a big plus.

Wiped out by......

Howes for Lever

I hope Melksham has a blinder tomorrow. He has fought so hard to get his body back into shape for one final crack at the big time.

If nothing else, I guess Petty will be pleased to learn that the Demonland expert selection committee have turned their attention to some fresh whipping boys...

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
