But if it aint Claz, who is our other go to extractor to assist and eventually replace Vines? And it has to be soon as it would appear Vines may have tipped past his prime and on the downward slide. Either that or he's just burnt out and needs a complete break from that role.

We need a smart coach. Someone who can see the direction of the game and have vision to try something different.

Commands respect from the players, FD and board.

The review didn’t go deep enough IMO and it shows.

You mean the review we allegedly had that no one knows the problems outcome or proposed solutions

I have been commenting on the lack of our coaches smarts for years to be pilloried on here.

Now its 2 years too late to wake up

The lack of action has been criminal in my view putting Green iin was desperate and will ensure very little happens while we leak memberships

O and 5 a real possibility

Why was Goody contract extend twice, understand in 22 but why again in 23?? Unfortunately all recent coaches Longmire cooked, Simpson cooked so who’s available??

The MFC is famous for pulling the trigger too early and contracting too long on coaching and player side.

We are too nice and quite often pay the price.

Ruthlessness is not in our DNA bar roughly Nov 2020 through late 2021. Then we seemingly got comfortable with our lot and resumed normal programing.

Which given them being closer to 2021 were even more pathetic! It's such a big deal to get rid of a coach. You muck it up and you can put your team back 5 years! Goodwin's proved he can coach and the players love him. He's not untouchable but if we still have the cattle and they still believe in him a sacking will waste what we have.

I guess we will know by seasons end.

Possibly earlier. There's no denying the last two games have been dreadful. If at some stage Goody loses the players' faith THEN he should go. I'm not sure they have yet.

What are the actual chances of MFC upending the coach anytime during a season? I agree we need fresh ideas but would it ever happen? The players love him…maybe that’s the problem, too much love and not enough blood sweat and tears.

Petracca at least spent his off season off training his guts out making himself as good as humanly possible…can we say the same for the rest of the team?

Nathan Jones head coach? Get in the deep end son!

sometimes I think players and coaches would actually benefit from reading these forums and the comments…not often, but a harsh reality check isn’t always a bad thing. Get out of your bubbles every now and then and read what everyone is saying. I know we all think the media are a pack of [censored] but they generally just say what’s going on.

In the last 28 years we've done it four times. So I would say reasonably good.

Rare unfortunately.

If you had heard the Brad Green interview prior to the game then you'd know he's very cushy with Goody as a coach.

Spruiked the same rubbish around 'love' and 'culture'..

Something feels very toxic inside the club me thinks..

What exactly would you have expected to hear Green say?

“Yeah look he’s on thin ice tbh, a loss today and I reckon the board’s going to have a real think about it all”?

FFS, every president is going to back their coach.

Also, Green if anything suggested the use of the word “love” wasn’t something he personally gets around but explained that it’s about a concept - whether we use the word “love” or “connection” or just the club’s motto of “true”, that was the focus.

I would guess most fans don't care about love-ins and whether we are "getting around Goody/Richo" with a Kumbaya Culture Titan.

Bottom line, most would probably just wanna see a maniacal never say die white line fever effort from the 22 that run out week in week out for four quarters regardless of injuries, off field issues and any other extraneous factors.

The last two weeks have been anything but, aside from a few personal exceptions in an individual sense player wise.

Unaccountable, amateurish footy has crept into the group and it's completely unneceptable.

Even Simon jumped in there with the nonsense Max comments. Amateur stuff from the leader with the Cap having to cover for him and try to explain it in the press afterwards.

The is not presently an AFL footy team. It's a rabble seemingly in free fall looking on.

And Brad's still talking finals! My god. Talk about deluded. How about we just try and get this week right!

Almost none of this has anything to do with what I was saying, but ok.

On the last para - I can guarantee you that if Green avoided answering a question about whether we still views finals as the expectation, he’d cop it on here for “accepting mediocrity” or not having a “winner’s attitude” etc.

I wonder where we would be if we got the points rd1? We have always been pretty fragile as a club mentally. That shot of confidence having beaten GWS could of been massive for the players. Since then they look pathetic and the opposition feed off it.

Unless Simon Goodwin can salvage a miracle to save his coaching career there will be a few possibilities for the next Demons coach.

1) John Longmire probably at the top of that list. Would definitely be keen to get him.

2) Justin Leppitsch is another possibility. Done some great work as an assistant coach at both Richmond and Collingwood after an unsuccessful stint at Brisbane.

3) Then Adam Simpson. He is a former Premiership coach after all.

4) Then Ken Hinkley. Who will be looking for a new job at the end of this season.

5) Unlikely, Nathan Buckley, who is probably keen on the Tasmanian Devils job.

6) Lastly, Luke Beveridge if the Bulldogs don't make the finals.

None of us is privy to what the review thought of Goodwin. The fact that they thought he needed to lighten up or have his stress levels reduced indicates to me that he was under some fair scrutiny. Who knows if the same issues are still there then he may well not see to his contract.

I have to ask though, what value is there in getting rid o hime now. Who would be the interim and how could they improve performance given the coaching group are all pushing the same message or should be. All the coaches should be on the same page so how will sacking Goody change the narrative?

The board usually get a coaches report or update for each meeting. I am sure they wouldn't be happy just as we aren't but what improvements or areas of improvement are they looking for. Both beyond the pay scale of us supporters

As much as ppl would hate it. James Hird has to be an option. I think he is a good blend of football brain and modern coach with a good read on the modern game. I reckon he would have an impact similar to Mitchell if he was given the chance.

What ever he done at Essendon was in the past and he has paid for his indiscretions.

I think it depends on the reason we are performing so poorly.

For me it’s probably the playing group more than it is Goody.

FFS I thought the original list of has beens was bad but congrats, you managed to top it 🤣

James Hird?!

Are you guys serious?! Lol! 🤣

He hasn't coached in years! I think he is Port Melbourne's Football Manager in the VFL now besides doing media work.

I highly doubt James Hird would be an option. Let alone be interested.

Anyway, I am not calling for Simon Goodwin to be sacked now. But he has until the end of this season to show improvement to keep his job. All the players and coaching staff are under scrutiny. Winning is what matters in this cut throat AFL industry.

While Simon Goodwin is a much loved person for breaking our Premiership drought of 57 years at the Demons, we need to make some ruthless decisions at the end of this season if we keep heading in our current trajectory.

I am not happy to discuss these scenarios, but we have to be realistic too. We need to be in the business of winning Premierships. That is what matters!

Ash Hanson never gets a mention but is considered a highly tactical and rigorous eye. Get the feeling he is waiting for Boss to get the chop.

Not a proven coach. Lacks accountability; weak moral compass.

Funny how since the players have been trusted more for their own fitness regimens over the summer, we can barely run out 3 quarters.

This new ‘love’ program needs to be torn up, players have gotten way too complacent. Time for the tough love approach, who cares if we put noses out of joint as something drastic needs to be done.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
